tantek catsup - "do A. then, replace A with B" is often less work than "do B" because sometimes after doing A you find you don't need B, or doing A teaches you something that saves you more time doing B subsequently than you spent doing A in the first place. it's a common pattern in education, user interfaces typically refer to this as progressive disclosure, etc.
