tantek AFAICT, gendered nouns are essentially 1-2 bits of noise per noun. It doesn't make sense from an evolutionary perspective (assuming natural evolution of natural languages). Perhaps if there's someone with a historical linguistics background here they can shed some light on how/why it happened.
