#[chrisaldrich]I'm waiting for the naive RSS/Feed reader version of "I have a great idea: Wouldn't it bee cool if there were a place like Blockbuster or Netflix that would let you temporarily rent books and return them when you're done reading them?"

#[chrisaldrich]I'm still a fan of Julien Genestoux's SubToMe.com for RSS Subscriptions. Has anyone tried to wire it into an IndieWeb social reader yet?
#[Murray]Neat, but interested whether SubToMe suggests TheOldReader for everyone? It's what I've used for years but don't think I've ever seen it referenced by third-parties before, intrigued if they're somehow scraping my usage to highlight it or if that's just standard?

#[chrisaldrich]They support most of the popular readers including that one. If you've got it on your site you can designate a default if you like.
#[chrisaldrich]I think it sets a cookie to remember your favorite service too.
#[Murray]Very cool. I figured it was supported (that's a long list) just interested to see it appear in #2 spot, wondered if they somehow new that was my preference 🙂

#LoqiIt looks like we don't have a page for "is energy conservation" yet. Would you like to create it? (Or just say "is energy conservation is ____", a sentence describing the term)
#ndegruchyThe irony around the badge is that you have to load javascript, have it look up your website, and then draw the badge... instead of.. I dunno, just generating an image from the initial test
#[chrisaldrich]That link just above from Steve Messer's website (great URL by the way) has an example of both a "further reading" AND a "related posts" section on the same page for those who were talking about that idea in the past week.
#[chrisaldrich]I wonder what the delta is? And is it greater than the guilt-ed savings created by having it?
#ndegruchyI would imagine a very small png or webp would be massively less taxing -- all depending on your traffic, though

#[Ana_Rodrigues]I want to talk about this but please direct me to the right channel if this isn’t appropriate. I stumbled upon Steve’s website last month and this week I revisited it (that same post) and I ran my website on https://www.websitecarbon.com/ and I got a horrible result and I genuinely don’t understand why.
#[Ana_Rodrigues]I did massive improvements this week to use system fonts and reduced my image size but if loading anything (in this case javascript) adds to your page weight/carbon… i don’t get it 😞
#[Ana_Rodrigues]Also, my result in websitecarbon seems to be cached because none of my improvements were picked up.
#[Ana_Rodrigues]oh wait! the cache has cleared up! I went from 57% dirtier website to 93% cleaner

#[chrisaldrich]I don't know him, but Steve's site makes me think that we should invite him to talk about something like that at an upcoming HWC? Might make an interesting topic of discussion. I'd do it from here, but I'm guessing the Pacific time zone may not work out well.

#[snarfed]i’ve spent a lot of time over the last 6-9 mos researching climate science and emissions, and honestly, i’d recommend putting your energy elsewhere. datacenter electricity usage has been flat over the last 10+ years despite massive increases in computation, usage, etc, and much of that industry is moving to or already fully renewable + offsetted anyway
#[snarfed]if you want to reduce your emissions, fly less or cut meat or (most important!) advocate. “greening” your web site will have very little impact
#[snarfed]apologies, only partially on topic, happy to move to #indieweb-chat if we want

#[tantek]haha indeed, blogging about "how to cut meat out of your diet" and "tasty vegetarian or vegan recipes" may actually have more of a climate impact (reduction in CO2) than any amount of work on datacenter electricity usage
#[tantek]^ tries to bring it back on topic with blogging as a suggestion 🙂
