Twitter’s had that DM sidebar thing for a while now. And yeah basically every social network is trying to look like every other social network. Facebook, Twitter, even LinkedIn…

Have they quit trying to differentiate themselves? Or are they all closing in on parity in evil design and engagement patterns?

Yeah! Re: retweets. [manton] I feel this is at least some indirect acknowledgment that you were/are right about “plain” retweets: https://twitter.com/kateconger/status/1314597532811501568

@kateconger
NEW: Twitter is making big changes to prevent election misinformation from going viral. First, it is slowing down & discouraging retweets. When you try to share a tweet, you'll be asked to add your own views first in a quote tweet. https://www.nytimes.com/2020/10/09/technology/twitter-election-ban-features.html

algorithmic feed << Twitter turning off likes amplification in their algorithmic feed: https://twitter.com/kateconger/status/1314597533868457984

@kateconger
Second, Twitter is turning off the recommendation algorithm, which surfaces tweets that people you follow have liked. Lots of users have complained about this algorithm, but these kinds of algos are used to drive growth and I can't think of another company ever disabling one.

What is trending
#
Loqi
Trends is a feature on social media silos that shows the some of the most popular hashtags (AKA Trending hashtags), links, news articles, words, or phrases that are being used or cited in posts, and have been criticized on Facebook & Twitter for being manipulated by bots and/or showing conspiracy theories at the top https://indieweb.org/trending

Trending << Criticism: low quality content is rapidly amplified: https://twitter.com/kateconger/status/1314597534623391749
#
@kateconger
Third, Twitter is adding context tabs for ALL trends seen in the "For You" pages of users in the United States. Trends have been blamed for a lot of low-quality content going viral. I wrote about earlier efforts to fact-check Trends here: https://www.nytimes.com/2020/09/01/technology/twitter-trending-topics.html

What is fact check
#
Loqi
It looks like we don't have a page for "fact check" yet. Would you like to create it? (Or just say "fact check is ____", a sentence describing the term)
#
[tantek]
Hmm we should have a page about providers labeling content as misleading or disputed
#
@kateconger
And finally, Twitter is expanding fact-check labels. When someone tries to share a tweet that's been marked as false, they will see a pop-up that asks if they're sure they want to spread the info. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/Ej5jbEjVkAEjO9E.jpg

Folks who are posting what they /read - I'm looking for a slightly easier way to get the data for a book when publishing the `read-of`, maybe via a bookmarklet so I can then post to indiebookclub, but what do y'all do?

I have a shortcut that parses a goodreads page and makes a micropub post with read-of h-cite

[schmarty]
(So on my phone I look up the book on goodreads and share it to the "Reads" shortcut, which runs some JS in the page to extract the title, author, and ISBN)

My Hugo template for rendering reads sticks in an img tag for the openlibrary images KevinMarks mentioned, if the entry has an ISBN.

[tantek] Thanks, I think these pre-election changes at Twitter are a good idea. Some of them should probably be permanent changes.

If you get a broken image you can upload your own cover pic to openlibrary.org
