@jack
We are trying to do our part by funding an initiative around an open decentralized standard for social media. Our goal is to be a client of that standard for the public conversation layer of the internet. We call it @bluesky: QT [@jack] Twitter is funding a small independent team of up to five open source architects, engineers, and designers to develop an open and decentralized standard for social media. The goal is for Twitter to ultimately be a client of this standard. 🧵

have we seen any evidence of any progress on this since his last tweet about it?
#
aaronpk
apparently they are still in the process of hiring people and deciding whether to build something new https://twitter.com/jack/status/1349510782417920001
#
@jack
This will take time to build. We are in the process of interviewing and hiring folks, looking at both starting a standard from scratch or contributing to something that already exists. No matter the ultimate direction, we will do this work completely through public transparency.

I continue to expect this to disappear quietly after eyeballs move elsewhere

Should we make a twitter interop Problems page specifically? (the current twitter page is a bit rambly)

There was some talk today in the https://newpublic.org/festival by https://twitter.com/gvelez17 about Blue Sky. It sounds like if you make a proposal and Twitter likes it, they'll fund you to build it? I didn't catch it all, but gvelez17 may be able to give some guidance.
#
@kevinmarks
@jack This feels disingenuous. Twitter has eroded open standards support and has recently made it much harder to build tools that interoperate with twitter. If you are serious I can give a list of standards that you can readopt rapidly to improve this.

Her brief discussion of it made it sound like something that Twitter wasn't driving itself.

those tweets could have been repeats from 2019
#
aaronpk
yeah as far as i can tell from those tweets, they made no progress since 2019?

@mmasnick
@calebwatney Okay... so a bunch of people have been involved in the discussions and debates about how to approach bluesky, and last fall those who wanted to submitted proposals for moving forward. I believe that Twitter will eventually make all of the proposals public...

This search might give some more of her discussing over the last several months. I get the impression they're taking "community proposals" somehow and will fund one or more? https://twitter.com/search?q=from%3A%40gvelez17%20bluesky&src=typed_query&f=live

"_You may have heard about the Twitter "bluesky" initiative, launched by Jack last December "*to develop an open and decentralized standard for social media*." A small group of people, mostly from the dweb space, have been discussing and debating approaches, and have been asked to submit proposals. This is mine." - via Golda Velez_ https://hackernoon.com/blueskyprint-tki3z63

Anyone want to write up how to rebuild Twitter using html, microformats, webmention, micropub, microsub, WebSub, et al?
#
@mountain_ghosts
not only is this a clown's opinion about bitcoin in a thread of other nonsense, it's completely at odds with how twitter has approached the service it notionally offers to users https://twitter.com/jack/status/1349510779033174016
(twitter.com/_/status/1349515205714341889)
#
aaronpk
it's also not true about bitcoin
#
[Raphael_Luckom]
I guess I would say that if you want to make the next generation of decentralized social technology, and you go about it by anointing an exclusive group of people, hand-picked by you, as the architects of that effort, then you should probably expect that people will read a certain intention into those decisions.
#
[Raphael_Luckom]
This is an interesting claim from Golda Velez's bluesky proposal (https://hackernoon.com/blueskyprint-tki3z63): "Granular reputation in a decentralized space is a key problem and may require some novel solutions. The end result must be an endpoint that provides a reputation score for a user or message." We've been talking about how to avoid making tools that work well for racism, and this is one approach. I find the idea of quantifying
#
[Raphael_Luckom]
reputation like that scary, but it's an idea.
#
cbradford[m]
This is about as feasible and believable as Goldman Sachs saying they will create a new regulator for themselves. No major innovation came from a legacy incumbent player with billions to loose. This is most likely written by their lawyers to get ahead of litigation and regulations
#
aaronpk
That would be better as "provides a reputation score for a user or message from the perspective of the requesting user"
#
aaronpk
there's no such thing as an absolute reputation score
#
aaronpk
gmail has already done this with spam filters. There isn't a global spam score for a given message, it depends on who is viewing the message as to whether gmail marks it as spam
#
[Raphael_Luckom]
ah, thanks for that clarification, I was confused
#
[Raphael_Luckom]
so that would include something like Vouch
#
[KevinMarks]
Reputation scores have a dubious history too. Cory wrote a whole novel satirising the idea
#
aaronpk
In other news wtf Twitter has livestreaming audio now?

Hadn't noticed it before but that Hackernoon article has a paragraph-by-paragraph set of reactions using emoji including hearts, lightbulbs, money bags, and a thumbs down.

I am happy Donald Trump was held to account and impeached today. I am concerned that unless we reign in our dopamine polarization casinos and their obscene monetization that rewards lying, outrage, slander and disinformation—the viral madness superspreader HAS NOT BEEN ADDRESSED.

A Commonplace book (or commonplaces) are a way to compile and store knowledge, usually by writing information into books, notebooks, card catalogs, or in more modern settings on one's own website https://indieweb.org/commonplace_book
