Is this the channel being used for the HWC? If so, we're doing really nicely, but can't get our microphone working.
#
GWG
Yes, this is fine.

Great! Now I just need to figure out why I'm no longer getting audio... We'll catch up eventually.
#
eitilt
It's not a bad structure, but, yeah, it's a hard set of ideas to serialize
#
maxwelljoslyn
Eitilt - hope you are enjoying the discussoin as much as you can! Fel free to dro pquestions into here or anything else u want to discuss.

I do agree with that -- enough wikis have "follow these instructions" or "join the community this way", that we were a bit hesitant to add too much ourselves on the first viewing

maxwelljoslyn: You want them?
#
maxwelljoslyn
Yes! :) if you are able ot add them. can be for next itme
#
eitilt
A turtle? Carry your house with you?
#
eitilt
Hermit crab is good as well. Just about to say what Tracy did.
#
eitilt
Wikipedia says that the decorator crabs are a separate species from hermit crabs, but both will certainly work.
#
eitilt
Or, rather, a different superfamily.
#
eitilt
Well, if the webmentions just list the moves rather than the entire board, cheating is much harder
#
eitilt
(Russ) I love that mental image!
#
maxwelljoslyn
Me too eitilt :)
#
maxwelljoslyn
be sure to check out hte https://etherpad.indieweb.org/hwc-2021-04-21 with some notes on it fro this session
#
maxwelljoslyn
I will add some of your comments there too
#

That's up on our second monitor ;)

Thanks!

I (Sam) grew up around too many soybeans to find them a particularly great mascot...

The mushrooms are the splash screen on launch
#
maxwelljoslyn
Sure seems like mushrooms have captured our imaginations
#
maxwelljoslyn
Some kind of new multi-shroom logo
#
eitilt
Sam: Going back to the mycorrhizal network, they don't have the classic capped mushroom look, but the fungus does help trees (sites) share nutrients (webmentions)
#
maxwelljoslyn
I like nutrients a s a metaphor for WM!
#
maxwelljoslyn
You mean they move from tree to tree via th eufngus?
#
eitilt
Sam: Basically. The trees release some nutrients that they've produced from their roots, the mychorrhizal network picks them up and transfers them to to the roots of another tree, and releases the nutrients for the roots of the second tree (often a younger one) to take up. It's been a few years since I looked into it.

We have no internet-connected cameras in our possession
#
eitilt
And apparently no microphones either...
#
maxwelljoslyn
You are like cyberhermits
#
eitilt
Next time!
#
eitilt
Though the camera will probably take a bit longer than that.
#
eitilt
Have a nice night!
#
eitilt
It does sound quite interesting
#
maxwelljoslyn
Eitilt: what sounds interesting?
#
eitilt
The WebMention meeting
#
eitilt
Not going to be able to make it due to work, but it sounds interesting.
#
maxwelljoslyn
Got it. Well, there will be a recording available and probably some form of notes as well
#
eitilt
We'll keep our eyes open!
#

Getting called to dinner. See y'all next time!

Do notes from HWC get wikified?
#
[kimberlyhirsh]
I just realized that HWC Americas is hard for me to make but HWC Europe is doable. I may try to pop in next week.

wikifying hwc notes seems ike perfect use case for a little programming
#
maxwelljoslyn
"the day after the event grab the notes at (url) and make a wiki page called (hwc-region-yyyy-mm-dd) wit those notes"
#
maxwelljoslyn
we have bots that can consume the wiki, surely posting to it also doable
#
GWG
That seems like a sknebel type thing
#
sknebel
you rang?
#
sknebel
we considered that for IWC sessions, problem was formatting differences, but we never did fully trial it, maybe its not so bad
#
sknebel
(and arguably not-ideal notes coverage might be better than none)
#
GWG
sknebel: It seems like something you would do, as you've done similar things. Wasn't trying to push anything on you.
#
sknebel
didnt take it as such, no worries :)
#
GWG
But clearly, again...better than none.

yes as someone that has been archiving a bunch of etherpad HWC notes to the wiki, there's A LOT of manual clean-up necessary to fix "simple" things like lists, links, linebreaks
#
[tantek]
text-like formats being just incompatible enough to have to keep their quirks in mind in order to translate from one set of quirks to another set, while having the human ability to distinguish between meaningful quirks, and quirks worth editing out because they're not relevant to the content 🙄

I gave my bio and profile photo a long-overdue update, and decided to link my list of things I do to tag pages on my site https://waterpigs.co.uk/
#
barnabywalters
it doesn’t feel like a really good solution to tag/topic discovery, but it’s a start, and better than having an unparsable tag cloud
#
barnabywalters
especially as the list was there already
#
jacky
yup, I agree
#
barnabywalters
jacky: I don’t believe we’ve met properly apart from briefly yesterday; hi! what’s your url?
#
barnabywalters
hmm does loqi still do the thing where you can ask who a person is?
#
barnabywalters
who is jacky
#
barnabywalters
woah, you host your own livestreams?! nice
#
barnabywalters
I had some infrastructure set up for doing audio streaming, I even used it at an IWC demo years ago, but it was always just a little experiment, I never got much use out of it
#
jacky
no, I want to!
#
jacky
ah yeah, https://live.jacky.wtf is still shaky
#
jacky
that's really the only thing blocking me from streaming again, lol
#
barnabywalters
heh, my old icecast server is still up http://radio.waterpigs.co.uk/
#
barnabywalters
what software runs live.jacky.wtf? did you make it yourself?
#
jacky
not at all, not that skilled
#
Loqi
[zorchenhimer] MovieNight: Single instance video streaming server with integrated chat.
#
barnabywalters
cool, good to know. is it difficult to set up and maintain? I take it there’s some difficulties, if your instance of it is shaky?
#
jacky
tbh I remember wanting to have a bridge between Twitch and itself and then trying to figure out how to do that made me halt any efforts on it, lol
#
jacky
that is a requirement for me (or at least some way to use XMPP or IRC as a chat 'engine' and bridge the other services into there)
#
stevestreza
nginx can relay RTMP to multiple sources, if you wanted to stream to twitch and something like this
#
Loqi
jacky, stevestreza: we try to keep dev talk out of this channel, can you move to #indieweb-dev?
#
jacky
that's why you got a _ in your name, Loqi
#
jacky
stevestreza: I _remember_ vaguely seeing something for that

barnabywalters: Checking out your site. It's been a while since I looked.
#
GWG
You were last seen in 2017 according to the sidebar.
#
barnabywalters
there are hamster photos now
#
barnabywalters
heh, yeah, I don’t use the location features much! in fact I’m working on fixing the lack of map tiles right now
#
GWG
barnabywalters: I might just remove it if you aren't using it much.
#
GWG
At least until you do.
#
GWG
Or just post something random so it doesn't look like you haven't updated it in a while.
#
GWG
I hid last seen once I stopped going places during the pandemic
#
barnabywalters
I was considering that, but I like having the possibility to easily have interactive maps on my site, and it should be pretty easy to fix the problem
#
GWG
barnabywalters: I still use ideas I got from your site
#
sknebel
oh hi welcome back barnabywalters!!
#
barnabywalters
heya sknebel!
#
GWG
barnabywalters: I hope all this barnabywalters love encourages you to be seen more.
#
barnabywalters
aaand map tiles are back! so now people can see where I was four years ago :D
#
GWG
barnabywalters: If you want some ideas about location fun, I have a few.
#
barnabywalters
oh cool! I have a similar page, but it just lists locations I’ve saved on my site rather than also listing associated posts https://waterpigs.co.uk/places/
#
GWG
barnabywalters: I don't have that yet
#
GWG
This is coarse, not fine location
#
GWG
I automatically generate this whenever I add coordinates to a post.
#
barnabywalters
if you have access to coordinates for the places in your list, it’d probably be pretty easy to show them on a map
#
GWG
barnabywalters: Add /map to any of my archives
#
GWG
For example
#
barnabywalters
what software is running https://map.gwg.us/? is that the static map generator I vaguely remember aaronpk making?

It's been a long pandemic

What is Racket?
#
Loqi
It looks like we don't have a page for "Racket" yet. Would you like to create it? (Or just say "Racket is ____", a sentence describing the term)

i like how the trend of new apps now is to just buy very expensive one-word .com domain names
#
sknebel
.io is also pretty full and people are somewhar wary of its operator, gTLDs pull pricing shenaningans and confuse people
#
[chrisaldrich]
sknebel, I'm not sure it could be considered uncommon given that I don't write a lot of code, but I've actually set up that version of the "original" Racket and used it before. (But maybe it's the publisher and LaTeX fan in me.) When I saw the name, it's the same place my mind went to first.
#
sknebel
I was considering if the label is fair or not, but I think "more uncommon" works. also a lot more prevalent in academia from what I've seen, since its well-suited for learning and experiments
#
vilhalmer
we used racket in my programming language design course
#
[chrisaldrich]
I think it's definitely fair to call it uncommon.
#
[chrisaldrich]
Surely I'm an edge case.

just register a bunch of one word .coms that make little to no sense right now, but could be an app in the future
#
[tw2113_Slack_]
eh, my tests are showing a lot are “not available” when i just went to dictionary.com word of the day and grabbed random words
#
[tw2113_Slack_]
so…just add “app” after it instead

i think the "*app.com" trend died off a few years ago
