aside: this is your periodic reminder of the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nirvana_fallacy — the next time someone pitches you a glorious aspirational vision/project that has none of the problems of actual working solutions today

> folks… there is no reason I should be here as a curious first time user instead of a Discord server
#
petermolnar
there is so much wrong with this sentence, but it can be summarised easily: Discord is a silo, not a protocol. Even if indieweb was in discord, it would only be one way to connect, and not The Way.

extratone[m]: made a discord bridge: https://discord.gg/dqmFnvmN7N - keep it in mind that it's literally less, than an hour old, so it's in testing.

what is POSSE?
#
Loqi
POSSE is an abbreviation for Publish (on your) Own Site, Syndicate Elsewhere, the practice of posting content on your own site first, then publishing copies or sharing links to third parties (like social media silos) with original post links to provide viewers a path to directly interacting with your content https://indieweb.org/POSSE

but, and this is important: discord is still a terrible choice for public chats.

what is reach?
#
Loqi
reach is usually used to refer to the number or extent of people that see or are at least shown a specific post (of yours) in whatever aggregator or reader app, site, or home (news) feed feature of a silo that they use to view posts https://indieweb.org/reach

https://lab6.com/0 "Deurbanising the Web" (PDF) - this is an interesting one. Half of it is completely indieweb & longevity, the other half is the polar opposite. It does have good points though, and since I have been long considering of offering a PDF download of my entries, maybe it's time to put a bit more effort into it.
#
aaronpk
wow yeah
#
aaronpk
heh "PDFs used to be large, and although they are still larger than equivalent HTML, they are still an order of magnitude smaller than the torrent of JavaScript sewage pumped down to your browser by most sites"

#
[tantek]
I mean that part is true
#
[tantek]
the mobile apologism is weak, that PDF is crap on mobile, kinda demonstrating the futility of the PDF-only approach
#
aaronpk
yeah i haven't seen that with a PDF, and I would assume a post like this would be demonstrating the best features of PDF
#
[tantek]
it claims "Eh, they look alright to me." which is laughable. uh no, it looks like crap on mobile.
