Archiving....I do it a lot
#
[tantek]1
^ I just turned this on for my account (so folks who don't follow me can't dm me or add me to chat groups)
#
[tantek]1
archiving++ 🙂
#
Loqi
archiving has 1 karma in this channel over the last year (2 in all channels)
#
GWG
Need more organization though
#
[tantek]1
same
#
GWG
I honestly thought my parents would be interested in helping post retirement
#
[tantek]1
one thing I struggle with in archiving is the changing nature of who I'm ok with seeing some subset of photos over time
#
GWG
But they are only interested in theory
#
GWG
[tantek]1: That's a challenge
#
[tantek]1
the "audience" that I want to be able to see a photo changes quite drastically from the moment I take it, to within minutes, then hours, and days, and then again after weeks/months and perhaps again after years
#
GWG
I added This Week and On This Day to replicate the silo versions of those sorts of features. I curate my website posts, but to your point, my thoughts change
#
[tantek]1
and some photos I want to expire after the fact
#
GWG
Thanks to /thisweek I know that on August 12, 2018, I started teaching a class in the Philippines...

Etc
#
[tantek]1
what is this week
#
Loqi
This Week in the IndieWeb is a weekly digest of activities of the IndieWeb community https://indieweb.org/this-week
#
GWG
So, maybe I am happy to compromise for the sake of some nostalgia
#
GWG
This Week is like on this day, only broader
#
[snarfed]
the DM limiting feature seems confusing. wouldn't you just follow them, DM them, and then unfollow?
#
[tantek]1
hmm have you documented your /thisweek example somewhere GWG? this is the first I'm hearing about it!
#
GWG
I thought I put it under on this day
#
[snarfed]
the way Twitter does it, where the recipient has to follow the sender, seems to make more sense?
#
GWG
I was annoyed sometimes my on this day was empty
#
[snarfed]
or at least is stronger
#
[tantek]1
snarfed, any raising of barrier helps. plus the rapid follow/unfollow actions already trigger suspicions in various systems (get you banned)
#
[snarfed]
or they just wouldn't unfollow at all
#
[snarfed]
anyway, agreed, layers. just doesn't seem like a meaningful layer

I'm tempted to create /memories though. That's the name I think Google Photos switched to

Twitch offers an follower only mode which lets streamers restrict the chat to only include viewers who have followed the streamer for a specific amount of time (for example 15 minutes or a day) which is a nice addition of barriers and gives some time to rethink the 'interaction'

Hey all, wanted to share something I've been working on — still on the early side, but usable / capable enough, and ready to start sharing.  In short, it's a tool for community-scale action — determining local futures, adapting to and mitigating climate change, and in general, building the futures of the places where we live:
#
[Sam_Butler]
Here's a piece describing the vision/motivation behind it:
#
[Sam_Butler]
Feel free to try it out, share with folks if it's fun, send feedback + ideas along, etc.!  Any thoughts on the possibilities, things to consider, ideas, bugs/issues, improvements, others who could be interested, would be much appreciated.  Also, if any folks are interested in collaborating/engaging deeper on Placeflow, I'm very much up for it!  Pretty open-ended on that front — e.g. design, activism, product, spreading the word,

software, branding, just wanted to put it out there.  It's not open-source (yet) ... although in the medium/long-term, the idea is to make it a federated protocol, so people can run + configure + manage their own instances of the software, while having the data and functionality be interoperable
#
[Sam_Butler]
P.S. Regarding the values / principles of the project, which currently aren't articulated on the site, here is some additional information — prompted by some well-intended questions I've received on that front:

Sam Butler
#
[Sam_Butler]
_This is so removed from the notion of monetizing user data, that it didn't even occur to me to mention it. But in terms of the concerns:_
#
[Sam_Butler]
_1. There's no interest in user sign-ups, accounts, or data. You can do everything on the site without an account, except for the actions which are important to be associated with a given profile. So you can see everything, share everything, create new projects, all without creating an account. Only when you're commenting, logging contributions, "joining" projects, is when an account becomes important — because all of the activi
#
[Sam_Butler]
you're doing would be lost without it._
#
[Sam_Butler]
_2. It's desired for all stakeholders involved with the platform, to *only* receive compensation based on long-term outcomes._
#
[Sam_Butler]
_If a solar installer finds a local group of neighbors to work with, the ideal plan is for them to only get payment once the panels are installed and the homeowners are saving money — and the installer's compensation is directly tied to the amount of dollars and energy that the homeowners save, over the long-term._
#
[Sam_Butler]
_If there is any aspect of Placeflow earning compensation from the platform, it would ideally be through a mechanism like that — and perhaps, with contract language, it could help onboard some existing service providers to these types of models as well._
#
[Sam_Butler]
_3. In the medium/long-term, the vision for this is also to make it a federated protocol, so people can run + configure + manage their own instances of the software, while having the data and functionality be interoperable. There are some pending grants for this express purpose._
#
[Sam_Butler]
_And in general, these types of questions / concerns are incredibly helpful. The values here are far removed from so much of the shit we see in tech and business (data selling, rentseeking, etc.) — that I forget they need to be explained, or else people won't be able to know otherwise!_
#
Loqi
friendly reminder [Sam_Butler], can you move the tech talk (federated, protocol) to #indieweb-dev to keep this channel more inclusive and inviting?
#
[Sam_Butler]
↩️ So I considered this — the post has a small bit related to federation, and the rest is more general purpose / friendly, so I thought it was a better fit in the #indieweb channel.
#
[Sam_Butler]
Also, props on whoever created this, because I'm really not sure if I'm talking to a bot or a human.
#
[Sam_Butler]
Was I wrong on that? Apologies if so.
#
[Sam_Butler]
Basically, this passed the Turing test for me!

We try not to use threads here, because they don't translate well to the other protocols that people use to join the chat. Loqi is indeed a lovely bot.

This is really a surprising and almost transcendental experience. I've never had this kind of interaction before. I have a feeling of wanting + waiting for an animal to come sniff my hand and accept me
