Guest3361 I'm really excited. I went to sign up for a popular website called pronouns.page and among the typical login options (twitter, Google, discord) they explicitly warn against using Facebook and allow sign-in with indieauth and mastodon. pretty cool

[tantek] aaronpk, one area (and maybe this is more #indieweb-dev though it does affect user expectations of IndieAuth) that is worth exploring with maybe more explicit guidance is sign-up vs login

[tantek] that is, IndieAuth really should be "it" to sign-in and *use* a service, rather than only being an onramp to create yet another account.

[tantek] OpenID had a similar "problem" where it looked like you could sign-in with OpenID and then first step the service made you provide a username, an email etc. to create a "traditional" account

aaronpk yeah, that's more a question of how the service wants to run itself though. one of the big reasons for that in OpenID was that the service wanted other information from the user besides their URL, like email so they can contact them and such.

eb Yeah such a cool discovery. first time I have seen it in the "wild". We need more services like this! maybe we should push for more indieauth endpoint options and then start submitting PRs to other OSS projects? Maybe time to jump ship to dev

Loqi OpenID was a protocol for using a web address as an identity to sign-in to websites; it is losing support, is effectively dead (versions 1 & 2 are both deprecated, sites are dropping support), and has been replaced on the IndieWeb with web-sign-in and IndieAuth https://indieweb.org/OpenID
