not sure whether this belongs in /site-deaths or /silos, could reasonably apply to both: https://twitter.com/vitaliyk/status/1546818443826999296

It is incredible to observe how fast the tech world changes. Companies which seem unassailable suddenly disappear into footnotes of history. https://twitter.com/vitaliyk/status/1546818443826999296/video/1

What are people's thoughts on W3C Decentralized Identifiers https://www.w3.org/blog/news/archives/9618 ?
#
Loqi
The Decentralized Identifier Working Group has published Decentralized Identifiers (DIDs) v1.0 as a W3C Recommendation. This document defines Decentralized identifiers (DIDs), a new type of identifier that enables verifiable, decentralized digital id...

Namecheap has started pushing “handshake domains” which are the usual blockchain grift in the guise of “decentralization” but with nothing to make it usefully decentralized (or really, useful at all).
#
[fluffy]
it starts with the usual anti-ICANN paranoia (like all the alternate root nameserver manifestos do) and ends with a coin offering
#
[tantek]
is this on the web or was this an email blast?

[fluffy]
they’re pushing it from the namecheap dashboard. Saw it this morning when I logged on to fix some domain contact info.
#
[fluffy]
Historically, namecheap soft-launches stuff like that before doing the email blast, so presumably that’s coming soon.

and of course https://handshake.org/faq/ has the usual pretzel logic explaining why it’s okay for the environment that it’s proof-of-work

the entire namecheap/HNS setup feels like an oxymoron given that namecheap will let you rent a subdomain of one of their own HNS domains? so like you don't even get any of the ownership benefits?

[fluffy]
yeah it’s… something
#
[fluffy]
they aren’t even real domains but they cost more than a real domain, for no apparent benefit
#
[fluffy]
oh wait you can be a ‘pioneer’
#
[schmarty]
so many unsupported uses of the words "freedom" and "secure"
#
[fluffy]
clearly that’s worth $20/year
#
[fluffy]
I suspect they’re trying to recoup their investment before the bottom falls out on crypto entirely.

it could be worse, like these people: https://peername.com/ "Looking for a crypto domain?" and then sell .onion vanity domains along with the others.

i am genuinely curious how they do the vanity .onion domains lolwat
#
[schmarty]
lol ok they just generate one for you. 🤦‍♂️
#
[schmarty]
matching only up to the first 8 characters. for $60! that's bad price on a few hours max GPU rental lol.
#
[schmarty]
anyway this may be veering into -dev or -chat. certainly in the weeds.
#
[tantek]
what is a domain name
#
Loqi
A personal domain is a domain name that you personally own, control, and use to represent yourself on the internet https://indieweb.org/domain_name
#
[tantek]
should we document a warning there ^ about this?

Can someone point me to a tutorial getting webmentions to work from Wordpress to Mastodon? I have the plugin installed. Not sure what I have to do from there to get my posts published over on masto?
