[j12t] I liked reading about Aaron's location tracking projects, and it got me thinking about how valuable Snap Maps are, for example, among me and my friends. An old friend texted me out of the blue to meet up the other day because he saw me on the map nearby. I'd love to explore how to do that with ticket auth or something, so that I can have a map of where my indieweb friends are on the globe

good morning, indieweb; I know the question is more to indieweb-meta, but there are more people here, so: are there any ongoing plans for in person IWCs this year?
#
petermolnar
or just ongoing plans for any time?

Scott Rosenberg writes "Mark last week as the end of the social networking era". https://www.axios.com/2022/07/25/sunset-social-network-facebook-tiktok

I think he is right. But the underlying needs have not gone away. A golden opportunity for IndieWeb and friends?

such "golden opportunities" feel "free as in puppy".

i agree that small communities are going to take the place of the old school social networking tho

j12t I had to re-read that headline several times before realizing that the "Mark" in the start was not a reference to Mark Zuckerberg

"free as in puppy" 😂
#
aaronpk
lol i kept doing that too [tantek]. parsing it as something like "Mark, last week, did..."
#
[schmarty]
heh i forget where i first heard it but it is sometimes a really useful add to the "free as in beer/speech/etc" concept list

aaronpk: I think there are different use cases. One is community for sure, but the "my general news feed from my friends and what I care about" is another and even if FB becomes TikTok2, that won't go away. People just won't get it from FB any more.
#
j12t
(well, FB won't invest in it any more and so utility will further decline)

"mutant TV" doesn't sound sustainable IMO. If FB/IG drop any chance of seeing your friends's posts, people will eventually tire and move on, or treat it like Netflix and that has a very different usage model and stats
