#mdemocan mastodon users comment wherever webmention replies are enabled, or does the site owner need to set that up specifically?

#[snarfed]mdemo: the latter. Mastodon and the fediverse use ActivityPub, which is a different protocol from webmention. you can use https://fed.brid.gy/ to translate between them. we can discuss more technical follow-ups in #indieweb-dev if you want!
#diligiantHi, I came across bridgy fed thanks to Tantek recent toot. I read "Connect directly to the fediverse: @yoursite.com" and thought "gee, they managed to match bluesky handles" but then, I clicked and this was "@yoursite.com@yoursite.com". Am I right to assume that it is not possible to have a domain as an handle? thank you.
#[snarfed]diligiant the details are complicated, but in general yes, that's true, at least right now
#[snarfed]it's not clear yet which spec would own "use domains as handles in the fediverse" though, if any, or multiple, or how many of those spec(s) are in the W3C
#[KevinMarks]AP and AS2 already use domains as handles, it's Mastodon that has the dead-end choice of webfinger
#[snarfed]most of the fediverse, to be fair, not just Mastodon. even if the rest are just doing it for interop
#[snarfed]also AP and AS2 use URLs, not domains, right?
#Loqi[KevinMarks], [snarfed]: we try to keep dev talk (AS2) out of this channel, can you move to #indieweb-dev?
