barnaby
everyone still using twitter for site availability info like that should really consider an alternative now that profile pages are login gated
#
[tantek]
back to Tumblr for that I suppose

#
barnaby
tumblr’s almost as bad in that regard sadly
#
[tantek]
Tumblr is owned by Automattic, much better than Twitter's current owner
#
barnaby
tumblr has aggressively login-gated feeds and search results for months now
#
[tantek]
wait seriously? soooo back to Blogspot then?
#
barnaby
they let you scroll a little bit, then pop up a cutesey “well howdy pardner, you ain’t allowed in here”-type message
#
[tantek]
is that a js-only problem?
#
barnaby
yeah, and it’s trivially removed with dev tools
#
[tantek]
yup, works great with NOSCRIPT 😄
#
barnaby
still very annoying
#
[tantek]
what would that be called? progressive degradation?
#
barnaby
the overall trend definitely fits enshittification through necessity of growth
#
barnaby
progressive degredation is a pretty good term for websites being intentionally worse due to js though
#
[0x3b0b]
It amuses me to reflect that some such cases might also be malicious compliance.
#
gRegor
I can view that textfiles tweet and profile without being signed in to Twitter
#
barnaby
for me individual tweets work (but no replies or threaded tweets are loaded), but profile pages redirect to a login gate
#
gRegor
Odd. I feel like they went back and forth on this over the last year, so not too surprising it's inconsistent, haha

[preview] [Jason Scott] Power is back at Internet Archive, but it takes hours to recover from these, so don't worry too hard.

!tell aaronpk what is your preferred term/phrase for your home page feature of the collaboratively clickable pixel grid thingy? "grid" from https://aaronparecki.com/grid seems a bit generic and home page pixel art seems a bit long and doesn't capture the collaborative/interactive aspect of it. sknebel has one now too that updates an eInk display! https://www.svenknebel.de/posts/2023/12/2/

Ok, I'll tell them that when I see them next

I mentioned this in HWC but if anyone has any questions for me about technical writing that I could answer in a blog post / things you want to learn more about, let me know!
#
[tantek]
capjamesg, we sort of do some technical writing on the wiki, so if you think it fits into your larger theme, an evaluation of our https://indieweb.org/wikify page and suggestions for improvement could be useful!

!tell aaronpk you should make the images on your site loading=lazy as it's blocking the page load (inc the pixel grid script). Also, consider making smaller thumbnails (the homepage is 11MB for me)

maybe "homepage toy" could be a useful overall term for these kind of things

we could start with a subsection of /homepage perhaps and when that grows make a new page?

What is a homepage?
#
Loqi
🏠 Your homepage represents you on the web, typically at the top of your domain, with your name and an iconic representation, often marked up with h-card, and fairly commonly one or more streams of recent, topical, or most relevant posts marked up with h-entry https://indieweb.org/homepage
