# [Murray] [contact898]++ excellent post. I've always really loved little interactive elements like Josh W Comeau's heart ticker (see: https://www.joshwcomeau.com/blog/how-i-built-my-blog/, though I swear they used to have a post specifically on that feature and now can't find it)

# [lcs] I’m thinking about making a clickable reaction thingy on my blog as well. But I _still_ have to figure out what I wanna do about webmentions and/or comments.
# [lcs] Yeah that sounds like it’s worth figuring out!

# [lcs] Who has time indeed! Sounds to me like you’re more inspired to be writing articles than working on the code right now. That’s fine!
# [lcs] [contact898] what’s the distinction between the “comments” and the “webmention” sections on your site? Did Sara Jakša repost his entire post as a comment on your webmention note? I’m a little confused.
[contact898] joined the channel
# [contact898] there's no distinction
# [contact898] a reply webmention and a comment are the same, they can just be usbmitted in two ways
# [contact898] a like webmention shows only as a button
# [contact898] (from this: https://alexsirac.com/101-blog-posts-ideas-for-your-personal-website/ )
# [contact898] here you see the bookmark webmentions, likes webmentions, and one comment webmention
# [contact898] i usually trim down the webmentions because sometimes the wordpress plugin decides that the comment is the entire post (and sometimes it's sensible and only keeps the first few sentences of the post)
# [lcs] Yeah but what about the “WEBMENTIONS” section at the bottom?
# [contact898] clearly i forgot on her comment, will go fix it now :)
# [contact898] huh?
# [contact898] i don't see a webmentions section
# [contact898] there's nothing below the comments for me
# [lcs] Here https://alexsirac.com/webmentions-make-me-sad/
# [contact898] ohhh got it
# [contact898] huh, i've never seen those before
# [contact898] i think these might actually be pingbacks from other wordpress blogs, maybe
# [contact898] nope, that's not it
# [contact898] ok now that's just weird
# [lcs] Alright then I feel a little less silly for not understanding the distinction!
# [contact898] it's not you haha
# [contact898] so looking at the commnts backend it seems that wordpress treats these as pings
# [contact898] which aren't webmentions
# [contact898] (either for everyone or just for confused wordpress)
# [lcs] I guess maybe those sources sent pings?
# [contact898] yeah
# [contact898] this is what i see: so i only have tracy's face, then i have a comment from bacardi55, but chris' bookmark is a ping
# [lcs] What about benji’s two response, those pings as well?
# [contact898] probably! just went on lunch break, can't check anymore :)
# [lcs] Hah, no worries. Enjoy your lunch!

# starrwulfe Threads will get full fledged fediverse abilities in due time; it makes since to gradually "dip a toe" both infrastructure and social perception-wise for them. They've got a reputation to earn and a massive userbase to educate in addition to needing to refactor the codebase that was cobbled together out of Instagram's commenting engine for the task.

# starrwulfe I mean, that's exactly what I would've done --and they took nothing from Facebook's tech stack it seems.
# starrwulfe Better than X for sure.
# Loqi Ello was a microblogging silo similar to Twitter or Tumblr which shut down 2023-07-18 https://indieweb.org/Ello
# Loqi T2 was a social media silo that was an attempt to “build another Twitter” that was announced, launched, raised 1.1m from angels, then partially rebranded as “Pebble” at https://pebble.is (no relation to the watch) a month before it shut down, all in less than a year https://indieweb.org/T2

# dmowitz I don't think Ello is too bad a name. It sounds like "hello" and reminds me of 'Allo 'Allo (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%27Allo_%27Allo!)

# [lcs] I published a new post that I’m sure will get me hounded out of the indieweb community 😂 It’s a love letter to emails https://lars-christian.com/an-email-love-letter/
# [lcs] Good to hear I’m not the only one 😄
# [lcs] I also use disposable addresses! It’s good email hygiene

# bacardi55[m] emails++ While I do like talking via our site and webmentions for public convo', I love emails for "one to one/few" convo'

# Loqi Indy web is usually a misspelling of IndieWeb, but may refer to personal site features that make use of aesthetics from the Indiana Jones (AKA Indy) movies such as map animations, or a web of Indiana Jones fan sites which link to each other, or unlikely to mean a spider web encountered by Indy in one of the movies https://indieweb.org/IndyWeb

# starrwulfe Another email++ from me. Isn't there a way to make disposable email addresses for blog post comments?
dmowitz joined the channel
# [tantek] starrwulfe, there's a minimal free level of https://relay.firefox.com/ that you can use
# [aciccarello] starrwulfe When you say disposable what do you mean? If you just want to uniquely identify email addresses, some providers allow you to add and idenifier so you could have something like mailto:comment+abc123@example.com
# [aciccarello] *add an identifier

# [lcs] @starwulfe I think SimpleLogin has an API so you could request a unique email per blog post. Haven’t seen any such implementation of it in the wild though.
# [qubyte] Some providers support the `+` thing (subaddressing) so you could use the same inbox for lots of addresses, if that helps. https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/html/rfc5233

# redblobgames snarfed wrote a comment on my blog over 10 years ago and now I want to reply to him, but there's nothing on my blog that would ping him when I reply. :-/
# starrwulfe tantek: I was thinking of someway to generate exactly that-- something like `replyto+xxxpostuuidxxx@mydomain.tld` and any comment coming that way would go to the correct topic/post.
# redblobgames It showed up as “snarfed.org (http://snarfed.org/) has left a new comment on your post "Genetically engineered gut bacteria" ” and “Posted by snarfed.org to Amit's Thoughts at Sunday, December 29, 2013 at 9:05:00 PM PST”
# redblobgames It says snarfed *.org* posted the comment which makes me think it might have been bridgy
# redblobgames But now when I look at my blog, it says “Anonymous wrote at Sunday, December 29, 2013 at 9:05:00 PM PST” so somehow the link is broken now. Not sure what happened.
# redblobgames I admit ten years is a long time :-)

# [tantek] weird yellow maxed out memory pressure on my MacBook Air M2 despite having restarted each of the individual applications that are running. going to restart the whole OS to see if that fixes it. anyone else encounter this, maybe when browsing some sets of sites (personal? silo? others like Slack or Discord?) in some browser(s)?

# mahboubine and her boyfriend, jack, is the founder of patreon. I don't 100% agree with patreon's philosophy but I like the way jack thinks for the most part
# mahboubine well it's been nice chatting!
# mahboubine I gotta head to bed soon,
# mahboubine I'll hopefully see ya'll tomorrow
# [KevinMarks] Watch Jack's xoxofest talk about it - he explains how he came up with it, but also how it is quite different from what most patreon artists want (predictable monthly income, whereas his model was subscribe to each new artwork)
# [KevinMarks] They played live at xoxofest 2014
