hi all, fyi from Tibet Sprague / CTA: Hey folks, we're hosting what should be an interesting call about ActivityPub tomorrow at 10am PT: how's it's being used, what it might be used for, and how it might evolve https://www.hylo.com/post/74255

anyone else shoving their websites into mastodon search results?

good morning #indieweb!

[tantek]
what is Hylo?
#
Loqi
It looks like we don't have a page for "Hylo" yet. Would you like to create it? (Or just say "Hylo is ____", a sentence describing the term)

what is Tibet Sprague?

we want our blog to be fully searchable from mastodon
AramZS joined the channel
#
[snarfed]
Soni that's a challenge
#
[snarfed]
Mastodon posts themselves are barely searchable from Mastodon
#
Soni
[snarfed]: yeah there are a few rules you have to follow like "do not use CWs" "mark the profile as discoverable" and some other stuff
#
Soni
but mastodon search is a lot more usable than web search
#
[snarfed]
no, it's not the rules. posts are _not_ indexed, by default, unless you explicitly opt your account in in settings
#
Soni
[snarfed]: yes, the rules to enable a post to be searchable include: no CW, the profile needs to be marked as searchable, and a few others
#
[snarfed]
ah sorry yes, I misread
#
[snarfed]
also are only local (opted in) posts indexed? or local plus remote posts that the instance has seen? the former is inconvenient, the latter would be inconvenient and also confusing
#
Soni
like, that's what the code is looking for. they're "rules" in that sense.
#
[snarfed]
web search is at least global
#
[Joe_Crawford]
"mastodon search is a lot more usable than web search" - what do you mean by that? I find that over time thing drop out in a way more general search engines (google, bing) don't.
#
[Joe_Crawford]
hashtag, account searching is solid. more general search has limitations due to permissions and federation generally
#
[snarfed]
I'd argue that account searching is nowhere near solid, since it only searches local accounts, right?
#
[snarfed]
famously, when someone wants to start using Mastodon, they often get stuck on two things. 1) which server do I join, and 2) how do I find people?
#
Soni
we don't want it to be perfect, we don't need it to be perfect, we just need it to exist
#
Soni
and be available
#
[snarfed]
Soni: "it" is...having your blog posts show up in an arbitrary Mastodon instance's search results?
#
Soni
if you already use mastodon and the search happens to bring up useful results every now and then, why wouldn't you use it instead of going to google for it?
#
[Joe_Crawford]
do you have an example of what's not working Soni?
#
Soni
[snarfed]: exactly!
#
[snarfed]
full text indexed? or searching by URL? or...?
#
Soni
[Joe_Crawford]: our website doesn't support mastodon
#
Soni
[snarfed]: full text indexed (if the instance supports it)
#
[snarfed]
afaik you'd have to deliver the full text of your posts to those instance(s) as AP activities, and opt your federated blog's account into search
#
Loqi
friendly reminder [Joe_Crawford], [snarfed], would you mind moving this conversation (federation, federated) to #indieweb-dev? thanks!
#
[snarfed]
yeah maybe
#
[snarfed]
doable, and BF does the former, but not the latter
#
Soni
what's BF
#
[snarfed]
sorry, Bridgy Fed
#
[snarfed]
=> #indieweb-dev
#
Soni
why should we care about Bridgy Fed

molly white has low key become a pretty big indieweb advocate, https://bsky.app/profile/molly.wiki/post/3ktknnaxiph2x
#
[snarfed]
if anyone knows her at all, maybe consider pinging her to say hi?
#
[snarfed]
I think she's at least aware of and fond of the indieweb
#
[Joe_Crawford]
That video interview with her definitely highlighted that. I mean, rattling off POSSE and what it means firmly situates her in the IndieWeb camp. I put some quotes into an IndieNews post. https://artlung.com/blog/2024/05/17/molly-white-is-optimistic-about-the-indieweb/
