I've turned on web <=> Bluesky for new Bridgy Fed users. if you're already a user, you can enter your domain on https://fed.brid.gy/ to bridge your site into Bluesky
#
aaronpk
ooh does it handle links and photos?
#
aaronpk
cause my hacked together experiment to syndicate to bluesky does not, and i dont' have time to deal with that right now 😂
#
[snarfed]
yes it does
#
[snarfed]
the setup bridges it to the fediverse to, but I can turn that off for you
#
[snarfed]
I currently have http://aaronparecki.com opted out, but not http://aaronpk.com. lmk if you want me to change that
#
aaronpk
oh that's an interesting point, there isn't any content on aaronpk.com at all, it's just a redirect, will that work?
#
aaronpk
eh we can chat in #indieweb-dev further
#
aaronpk
but also later because i don't have time right now anyway

PSA if anyone had a domain with Google Domains and has not finished their migration to Squarespace, you might want to make sure you were fully migrated under your control. People have been trying to claim domains at Squarespace where the original owner had not signed up with Squarespace yet: https://krebsonsecurity.com/2024/07/researchers-weak-security-defaults-enabled-squarespace-domains-hijacks/

[Murray]
what is neocities

NeoCities is a free website hosting silo in the spirit of defunct silo GeoCities (Yahoo shutdown in 2009) that looks like a stepping stone to getting started on the IndieWeb https://indieweb.org/NeoCities
#
[Murray]
@Star nothing bad about it that I know of, some information above. Doesn't seem like a huge number of people here are using it, but seen plenty of discussion around it (that page seems surprisingly light, tbf 😄)

Also, Joe, I love the TV/radio metaphors.
#
[Joe_Crawford]
One of my tics is that if I know something about the business someone knows about I will attempt to use metaphors from that business. So as we started out knowing [Ros] comes with a filmic background I used metaphors from filmmaking the the film business. So I ended up comparing additions to legacy software to a film that's mostly complete and reshoots - and the tradeoffs are similar. Sure, the footage you might have may not be perfect,
#
[Joe_Crawford]
but reshooting the whole film is the most expensive difficult option vs trying to work with what one has.

[Joe_Crawford]
And thanks for coming capjamesg[d]++

[Joe_Crawford] One question I didn't ask is how to make sure a style change doesn't affect a different page.
#
capjamesg[d]
I noticed that one page on my site doesn't have my code styling JavaScript, for example. I overlooked that in implementation.
#
capjamesg[d]
I don't know exactly how, but I'd like a workflow that lets me find these kind of things.
#
[Joe_Crawford]
I have used a few approaches - there's no built in mechanism in CSS or HTML to indicate that some other content is required to make it complete. In PHP when I do `new Foo()` to create a new class there's rules for where to look for it. When creating new pages one has to keep those in mind. And when you then _change_ those pages you have to keep in mind those dependencies. Loqi might not like how technical I just got.
#
Loqi
friendly reminder capjamesg[d], [Joe_Crawford], it looks like this conversation is getting pretty technical (implementation, JavaScript, CSS, PHP), can you take it to #indieweb-dev?

Does anyone use visited link styles on their websites?

That site is a pleasure to navigate on a keyboard.
#
capjamesg[d]
I haven't seen too many blogs with visited links.
#
[snarfed]
it's a browser default style, right? capjamesg I assume you mean with a custom style?
#
nsmsn
I’m glad to hear that. We advocate for accessibility (a11y), but I would like to see our a11y program more mature and visible at our org
#
capjamesg[d]
[snarfed] I don't think I have overwritten mine?
#
capjamesg[d]
I don't see any visited link styles on my website like the red colour that I thought was the default.
#
nsmsn
a:visited { color: red;} is how you would declare that in css
#
nsmsn
Happy to take this to #indieweb-dev for more CSS
#
Loqi
hey nsmsn: we try to keep dev talk (CSS) out of this channel, can you move to #indieweb-dev?
