hm seeing more weird behavior with monocle. sometimes it just, stops showing anything? if i log out and sign back in it works though...
#
catgirlin.space
at first i thought it was related to my access token expiring and it not refreshing it, but to check i made access tokens expire after 60 seconds and uh. well over 60 seconds later monocle is working still for now...

Today… I’ve been in Tokyo again for just over a week. My partner and the little one have headed up to her parents a few days ahead of me, giving me a little time to myself. Unfortunately I caught a bug and was completely floored by it for a couple of days. I didn’t have any particular plans though, so I’ll probably tour some nice little cafes and do a little writing for my site (I’m better, but I need time to recover from the tiredness
#
[qubyte]
a whole bunch of posts about music which have been building up over the years, but I never quite get them to the point of publication because music is quite personal.
#
[qubyte]
Or maybe I could just blog about how the mosquitos here really disagree with me (though less extremely than they used to).
#

ooo, tokyo sounds nice :3

Normally, yes. School holidays means the only time we can really be here without needing to remortgage to afford flights is the summer, and it is sweaty.
#
[qubyte]
I do love it here though, shouldn’t complain!

Fun personal website design: https://com.micahrl.me/blog/ is a mirrored version of https://me.micahrl.com/blog/ , just swapped the subdomain and tld and then all the content also mirrors :D

could go one step further and reverse the positions of all the letters in the domain
#
[tantek]
though to make that work you'd have to start with http://em.example.com since there is no .em gTLD
#
[tantek]
er, ccTLD

jimwins++ nice post linked from /rel-author and it got me to read your blog home page. Great variety of subjects and perspectives. Sad to hear about the closing of the art supply store.

pour one out for visible webmentions on [benatwork]'s https://werd.io/ . I replied to one of his posts via wm just now, even though sadly I know it won't show up there 😢

hey, no worries! low priority!

Culturally— the option to accept but not display webmentions is something some definitely do. Though if the nondisplay is the result of a bug—that’s a bummer.

What is the easiest self-hosted CMS out there? I found "Known," but their download link doesn't even work.
#
Loqi
It looks like we don't have a page for "easiest self-hosted CMS out there" yet. Would you like to create it? (Or just say "easiest self-hosted CMS out there is ____", a sentence describing the term)
#
jeremycherfas
Known has the great advantage of being IndieWeb-ready more or less as is, but development is definitely stalled. You can get it directly from github at https://github.com/idno/known
#
Loqi
[preview] [idno] known: A social publishing platform.
#
[tantek]
The nice thing about Known is, despite the slowing pace of development, the creator/primary author [benatwork] is still using Known himself on his personal site.
#
jimw
[tantek] Thanks!
#
aaronpk
i keep wanting to build a self-hosted CMS that I can quickly spin up for various projects that I want to have a website, but every time I make the list of features for it, it gets way too long and I get overwhelmed
#
[benatwork]
(If anyone can solve how I can find more time to work on projects like Known while also keeping a roof over my head, I will be yours for life)
#
aaronpk
start charging for a hosted version like micro.blog?
#
[benatwork]
yeah, that was the original plan. I think bringing that back is probably the move - likely with a better back-end data model. the original hosted service was basically multitenant hosting under the hood instead of a single database optimized for the service. it was a way to get it up and running quickly, but the drawbacks were severe.
#
aaronpk
i can imagine
#
[benatwork]
I've been very impressed with how http://micro.blog has worked out, tbh. And I love the community version of avoiding blank page syndrome - it's all one community while also being lots of little sites. That's the right balance.
#
[tantek]
http://micro.blog++ is a great model and kudos to [manton] and team
#
[tantek]
[benatwork] I'm still working on how to make a project even installable for a second person, nevermind work on it to earn income
#
[tantek]
aaronpk, that kind of "self-hosted CMS that I can quickly spin up for various projects that I want to have a website" was I believe the motivation for Perch
#
aaronpk
what is perch?
#
Loqi
Perch Runway is a content management system with a monthly license fee, built on PHP and MySQL. It was formerly offered in two flavors with Perch being for smaller sites and Perch Runway for sites which have large collections of content https://indieweb.org/Perch
#
[tantek]
sorry, I mean second site, at all, nevermind second person. at least aaronpk has multiple sites running p3k
#
[tantek]
who is indiewebcat?
#
jimw
I think the pool of people who wish they could figure out how to spin up a small company focused on building/supporting a CMS platform is probably pretty large.
#
[benatwork]
the world has completely changed since idno. containerization makes it so much easier to draw on a wider range of tech - self-hosting is more involved than (S)FTP, but there's a lot you can do.
#
Loqi
[benatwork]: it seems like this conversation is more appropriate for #indieweb-dev (database, containerization)
#
[tantek]
I feel like we just played a game of indieweb creator buzzword jenga and [benatwork] pulled out the piece that collapsed and got Loqi's attention 😂
#
[benatwork]
@jimw: I lived it for a couple of years! uh, the credit card debt lasted a little longer
#
aaronpk
speaking of which, i need to flat-file archive indiewebcat.com and launch a new version of it on a subdomain 😿
#
[tantek]
using kickstarter to launch the hosted version of http://micro.blog with first selection of usernames was brilliant
#
[benatwork]
seriously yes
#
[tantek]
in the "keep a roof over your head while you work on the project" sense
#
[benatwork]
btw, you know what makes known really still fly for me? micropub. I've got a whole set of scripts automatically posting there from my bookmarks etc, using micropub as the glue. that's not everyone's use case, for sure, but it's been lovely for me.
#
[KevinMarks]
The decay of Heroku makes it harder than it used to be, and I miss the old appengine too.
#
Loqi
misses the old appengine too too
#
[tantek]
[benatwork] that's a fascinating insight. I wonder if you would consider expanding upon that in a post like "The Growing Micropub Ecosystem", literally opening with your personal workflow using your clients/scripts to update your blog and how that's save you time
#
[benatwork]
Yep, can write that
#
[tantek]
and made maintaining your own CMS much more sustainable
#
[tantek]
happy to contribute data points, I mean you should hopefully be able to mine A LOT from the wiki (and should feel no guilt in doing so, given CC0 etc., and you can cite it as a source)
#
[tantek]
[snarfed] how much do you use the WordPress built in post creating/publishing UI vs other Micropub clients to post to your blog?
Menchers joined the channel
#
[snarfed]
[tantek] pretty even mix of homegrown, built in UI, and Micropub
#
[snarfed]
long form and some short via homegrown, rest of short via built in UI, Micropub for responses
#
Loqi
friendly reminder [snarfed], it looks like this conversation is getting pretty technical (Micropub), can you take it to #indieweb-dev?
#
[snarfed]
aaronpk re "self-hosted CMS that I can quickly spin up," you did a bunch of sites with p3k for a while, right?
#
[snarfed]

#
