# lkajfla so what is the best way currently to search the small/indie/non-commercial web? is it just marginalia and teclis?
# lkajfla i think the holy grail would be google search with a flag for "exclude any pages which activate uBlock Origin"

# [morganm] I tried making a new Instagram account to start somewhat fresh with friends who are active on there and try and tweak the algo a little more healthier than my current account and then I got flagged as a bot and my account suspended, possibly because someone reported me for impersonation but I have no idea.
# [morganm] I think the solution I am needing is actually ditching the app entirely. Thought there might be a sympathetic audience here
# [Joe_Crawford] Flagged as a bot on what basis? That's weird.
# [morganm] My only theory right now -- it's very minimal or non-existent the details they gave me -- is that someone reported me for impersonation
# [morganm] I didn't post any weird stuff, promise
# [morganm] It's a frustration but what it really exemplifies to me is that I shouldn't be putting my energies into a platform I have so little control over and is so limited in its detail and accountability
# [Joe_Crawford] To me a bot determination sounds like it would be made based on unusual speed of posting. Like using automated tools to post or like things or comment or whatever.
# [morganm] You know as much as I do
# [Joe_Crawford] Using a VPN gets my browser usage of Google sites flagged in a way that pops up captchas at a regular and frequent rate.
# [morganm] Just to clarify they didn't say I was a bot they just said I broke the rules, didn't give any details about what specific rules or issues. I did some stuff like I added a bio link to my current/old account to the new account, and messaged a handful of friends with the new account in innocuous stuff, and for all I know the machine learning algorithm flagged me as a possible sex worker possibly or something else just from the similarities between
# [morganm] the two accounts
# [morganm] Anyways believe me or not I didn't do anything weird but I think I was reported possibly by well meaning friends for account impersonation but I have no insight
# [morganm] I am genuinely locked out of the account for now with no real recourse or process until they review it
# [morganm] Again, more reason to post on my own website
# Halian o/
# [morganm] Yes, maybe 6-10 messages to individuals ? Ironically being like "Hey sup it's my new account, trying to stay sane in election season"
# [morganm] Exactly.
# [morganm] My goal of curating a happy account with trees and waterfalls and stuff with reference to avoiding the election ironically caught me in the net it seems
# [morganm] Just more evidence again how stupid these platforms can be
# Halian Social media was a mistake
# Halian Return to forum
# Loqi [indienews] New post: https://tantek.com/2024/285/t1/io-domain-suggested-steps
# [morganm] I know there is a strong cultural norm about not talking about politics here in this group, but the problem is that norm exists at my job and many of my social network to the point that it's like suffocating. I was really trying to get a new experience with my new insta account that was curated to remain sane and on positive stuff. The internet feels berserk as hell everywhere, many slack groups feel like everyone's in a no persons land where
# [morganm] everyone is making ominous gestures to stuff going on in politics but there is a social norm to not talk about it.
# [morganm] TLDR; I don't expect the norms to change, but I am going to focus on my own website rather than play in Zuckland any longer
# [tantek] re: "social norm to not talk about it" — rather among Slack instances/channels I'm in, there is a positive encouragement to stay focused on specific topics, that way everyone can choose if they want to read/chat about that topic or not. There are plenty of channels in plenty of Slacks/discords I know of with "politics" or related channels. So I don't share that experience of "no persons land". Rather, I think in a very positive way, communitie
# [morganm] Focus++
# [morganm] Specific channels++
# [morganm] But my experience has also been in Random and even channels called Ranting or similar names that no one wants to talk about some of the real rough stuff going on in the world, in a qualitative way that is different than even previous years. Could rant or random chat more, will go to that specific channel if I think of more ;D

# New Here are some of my questions, feel free to pitch in and answer them.
# spew New: I am doing well, how are you?
# New 1) Could personal indie websites make a comeback in the futue? I searched far and wide for a method to creat and host my own website on a top level domain, but no luck. Our interent has been ruined due to the advertisement companies and the website hoarding companies.
# New Hi spew, nice to meet you
# New spew new lol
# New Spew : I am doing well too, thanks for asking
# [Joe_Crawford] hello Spew and New. The indieweb wiki has many answers to many questions. We have a bot here that can answer questions about some topics
# [Joe_Crawford] what is hosting
# Loqi Web hosting can be the primary regular cost in maintaining an IndieWeb site; this page lists several options from free on up depending on your publishing needs, like a static, shared, private, or dedicated server https://indieweb.org/hosting
