Someone did a Masterโ€™s or PhD a few years ago. In Canada? Searching my memory. Not sure what to search for on the site.

theokiwi[d] Welcome! There are two papers that may be of interest. Jack Jamieson wrote a PhD dissertation on the IndieWeb: https://jackjamieson.net/dissertation-available/. Amy Guy wrote about presence on a decentralised web in their PhD dissertation too: https://era.ed.ac.uk/handle/1842/29537

friendly reminder capjamesg[d], we try to keep jargon (decentralised) out of this channel to make it more inviting to newcomers, can you move this to #indieweb-dev?

:wave hey there

For a year or so I've been talking to various people about "blogs as podcasts"... it seems really natural to me - the fact there are many ways to have posts read to us has really helped several of us latch onto some similar ideas. I looked at the indieweb wiki and it does seem that this was kind of an effort once, but it's largely not done anymore

I'm really curious if anyone has thoughts on "what happened"? Maybe it was just too early or...? Molly White's is a nice example of something that is pretty nice, though her content is pretty long form and doesn't have some challenges some of ours would with code embeds and stuff...
#
bkardell
idk, I'd love to hear some indieweb thoughts

I love Molly White's audio recordings especially with the length of her posts and the volume of crypto jargon.
#
[aciccarello]
It'd be cool to see more people doing that. It's also good for accessibility.
#
[aciccarello]
I don't think I have enough readers to justify the time/effort ๐Ÿ˜…

A friend of mine did that at one time. Maybe 20 years ago. I sent him a question about if I'm remembering it right. RSS to speech synthesis to podcast mp3 is how I remember it.
#
[artlung]
But Molly White does a nice job with it.

Yeah, there are lots of sythesis things now - some are quite amazingly good. I wrote myself a thing to do something similar for this purpose, but idk - there are a lot of angles I can see here....
#
bkardell
I'd prefer for people to record their own, like molly's - but I can understand that not everyone can.
#
bkardell
It feels like a thing one could create some easy ways to plug into
#
bkardell
but the flip side of this is that as a user I don't really want to wait for everyone to get onboard, you know? I kind of just want to set up a thing to expose other RSS feeds that way that I care about (though, obv this creates some challenges because you wouldn't want them getting listed with spotify and apple music etc)..
#
[artlung]
Video and audio require a certain painstakingness. It's trivially easy to set the recorder wrong and then have lots of noise in the background. Or software failure. If you do it manually that can also fail in interesting ways. I recorded a video to youtube sharing a screen, and I thought it was all good, but between setup and recording ODS or my adaptor failed and so I recorded the wrong screen entirely.
#

idk, I kind of keep bouncing around myself here - I'd love to chat with others about it if they're interested

[artlung] you're welcome, I like your CSS battles... I've been lax in watching them lately as I've just been busy and sick.
#
[artlung]
Thanks Matt. And bkardell the point I was making is that unlike text, the additional production requirements for audio and video (and we're not even talking storage and distribution) are just enough of an admintax to discourage wide adoption. That's how I see it.
#
[artlung]
And I just remembered this: https://artlung.com/blog/2004/06/17/108750581185207257/ - that's a post via blogger acquisition "audioblogger" which allowed me to make an audio phone call, press some phone prompts, and generate an mp3 that appeared on my blog.
