Nice to meet you all, my name is Jonathan, I recently got into web dev and I'm currently in the process of learning the trade, I love little websites.
#
formercanaanite
My current personal website is a mess(and honestly not secure) so I'll wait a little while before I post to have some time to fix that

i was basically looking for an alternative to the modern commercial internet and found yhis
#
Dennizjoon
Started missing the good old days
#
formercanaanite
same, I just went through Nostr first for some reason
#
Dennizjoon
Nostr?

one of those crypto protocol attempts
#
Dennizjoon
Ah, I havent kept up much with the entire crypto scene, basically started tuning out the internet for s while
#
Dennizjoon
a while*
#
Dennizjoon
just using it to communicate, and yeah once in a while playing games
#
formercanaanite
It seems there are many programmers in this community and I think they have the same basic issue of needing it for their job a bit too much πŸ™‚
#
Dennizjoon
Yeah, its become very integrated with life in general
bterry joined the channel
#
Dennizjoon
But its just become a cess pool of same repeated information spammes by Corporations and economic interests
#
Dennizjoon
Spammed*
#
Dennizjoon
Its like man it used to be an escape πŸ˜‚ the internet
#
formercanaanite
I wonder about what exactly makes us feel that, I agree though.
#
Dennizjoon
I think essentially it used to be more free form, today everything is algoritms paid for by companies doing their Seo work and it is just a lot more streamlined to be corporate and functional
#
Dennizjoon
Like websites used to be a wild west with all sorts of wild design
#
Dennizjoon
And then there is also AI generated content taking over like comment sections and all Search engines nos
#
Dennizjoon
Now* sorry for the spelling errors for some reason i cant see all text when writing longer messages

In proposals for decentralized networks, people seem to try and solve the discovery aspect with a web-of-trust or centralized institutions or "reputation" sorts of approaches to rank between web pages. In general, even a big blogger like Gwern feels tiny in his direct web interactions in comparison to an influencer with 100k followers.
#
formercanaanite
However if one does not want to be an influencer, making things on the internet, creating direct contacts with people of similar interests, that's the sort of thing people don't rely on but I hope does go somewhere. I'm quite new to this myself.
#
[tantek]
idk even know who Gwern is. Never heard of them!
#
formercanaanite
Is there like a big RSS feed for IndieWeb sites?
#
Zegnat
There is https://stream.indieweb.org/ which I think you can subscribe to
#
formercanaanite
Cool, thank you!
#
btrem
Zegnat: that looks like a feed from a Mastodon instance. Is it something more that I missed?
#
[Jo]
i think stream pulls everything tagged as indieweb yeah
#
Zegnat
Yeah, stream takes a bunch of things. Used to also pull in tweets tagged with indieweb and more.
#
btrem
But strictly social media, right?
#
Zegnat
Not sure which sources are still live
#
Zegnat
Maybe?
#
btrem
That's not really an rss feed for indieweb sites, is it?
#
aaronpk
what do you mean strictly social media?
#
Zegnat
When I clicked more werd.io also came up, that is an indieweb site, surely?
#
aaronpk
a bunch of individual websites are also pulled in to stream.indieweb.org
#
btrem
Twitter/X, Mastodon, Bluesky, etc.
#
aaronpk
my website is my social media
#
btrem
aaronpk: Ah, I didn't know that.
#
Zegnat
Clicking more again also shows capjamesg :) So there are definitely not-silos in the stream
#
btrem
I've only looked at stream a couple of times, and it looked like it was just social media sites, by which I meant silos. Should have been more specific before.
#
aaronpk
the volume of posts from mastodon instances has increased a lot over the last year or so
#
aaronpk
used to be a lot more personal websites
#
btrem
In defense of my ignorance, the first page has a *lot* of posts from mastodon.social. ;-)
#
btrem
Sorry, our last posts crossed paths.
#
Zegnat
I agree btrem, I had to click the more button a couple times to see some more personal websites. But they are definitely there.
#
Zegnat
Discovery is just hard to solve, as formercanaanite was highlighting
#
btrem
Yes, I can imagine. How does stream discover indie sites? There are no footer links (e.g., /about) on the stream page.

#
[tantek]
btrem is right, the #indieweb-stream is currently inundated by Masto posts hashtagged #indieweb and many nothing to do with indieweb
#
[tantek]
maybe it's time to move those to a different lower-signal firefhose
#
[tantek]
also occasionally a bsky post overzealously using #indieweb
#
aaronpk
-> #indieweb-meta
#

Does the wiki have a page for recommended email providers? I found https://indieweb.org/email but there's no list there. Maybe too opinionated a topic?
#
gRegor
Yeah, probably pretty opinionated topic, might mostly be lists of examples and criticisms. Further down there is https://indieweb.org/email#Email_Services_by_Type
#
[tantek]
yeah that could use some thoughtful re-organizing / gardening

Something I hate: I go to a site, and links or, more frequently, a form fails. I go to noscript and enable the javascript for that site. Page reloads, form is erased. Fill out the form anew. Still fails. Because now there is an additional -- ore more likely, /many/ -- new script domains that must be approved. Rinse lather repeat. Grrrr.

I finally made my "Strava replacement" thingy: https://lars-christian.com/logs/workouts/
