That is a good read! Unfortunately it skips over how censorship (negative) is essentially the same as moderation/anti-spam (positive), since they both control what is posted...

Carrvo I feel the need to say that "essentially the same" is collapsing to nothing incredible differences in the nature of things to an extent that renders your sentence completely false.
#
[artlung]
moderation, editing, incentives, spam, moderation, algorithmic amplification, algorithmic deemphasis are all distinct things.
#
[artlung]
and censorship is a wider topic than could fit in a 1000 printed pages.
#
carrvo
I get that all of those have different motivations, but from a security perspective their control over the content is the same.
#
carrvo
Editing capabilities *can* be misused for censorship and discrimination, for example. It *shouldn't*, but that is the social aspect.
#
carrvo
Are there really other differences in the power an entity (human or algorithm) is given beyond differences in the checks and balances on that power?
#
[artlung]
I’m uninterested in this conversation despite its seeming appeal to you.
#
[artlung]
I would also challenge you to look for the literature on mass media and public health. There are positive uses of censorship with measurable public health results. There’s a scientific reason for fiction depicting suicide to include disclaimers and information about resources to people.
#
[artlung]
I realize I’m inviting conversation. I would beg you to do more reading and absorbing before declaiming absolute truths in this forum.
#
carrvo
You think that I am declaring an absolute truth?
#
carrvo
Nevermind, don't answer that.
#
[tantek]
what is rhetorical?

Loqi
rhetorical is … wait, did you really want an answer? https://indieweb.org/rhetorical

Ironically I view "moderation" *as* "positive censorship" (since "censorship" typically comes with negative connotations). I think that it is too bad that the article only focused on the negatives.
