carrvoThat is a good read! Unfortunately it skips over how censorship (negative) is essentially the same as moderation/anti-spam (positive), since they both control what is posted...
[artlung]Carrvo I feel the need to say that "essentially the same" is collapsing to nothing incredible differences in the nature of things to an extent that renders your sentence completely false.
carrvoAre there really other differences in the power an entity (human or algorithm) is given beyond differences in the checks and balances on that power?
[artlung]I would also challenge you to look for the literature on mass media and public health. There are positive uses of censorship with measurable public health results. There’s a scientific reason for fiction depicting suicide to include disclaimers and information about resources to people.
carrvoIronically I view "moderation" *as* "positive censorship" (since "censorship" typically comes with negative connotations). I think that it is too bad that the article only focused on the negatives.
