[tantek] the Bluesky search feature has been broken for me as a visitor for weeks now, and it's not the first time it's been like that. My impression has been it's not a priority.

Separate topic: I've been wondering about how to make the Getting Started page on the wiki less intimidating. I can move this thought to #indieweb-meta but I figured here might be a decent place to ask first since it's such a prominent page. Any input on what could be cut or moved to a different page?

Yeah it's a better topic for #indieweb-meta. Will follow up there

[tantek]: aaronpk: is already known that the indieweb.org wiki certificate is expired?

looks like the lets encrypt renewal was not successful. if you need help to setup/fix it, let me know.
#
[tantek]
Uh that's news to me. Thanks for the heads up
#
aaronpk
Oops, looks like I missed one. I was dealing with this for a bunch of other domains earlier this week

i still don't really know what broke with certbot, but i was in the process of moving over to acme.sh anyway
#
btrem
What is acme.sh (and no, Loqi, I'm not asking you!)?
#
aaronpk
alternate letsencrypt client
#
perryflynn
acme.sh is a shell script which handles the lets encrypt acme web or dns challenges without any dependencies. just a cron job lets go. also it reload/restarts services which using the certs.
#
perryflynn
dns challenge is supported for many many domain providers.

Hello indieweb

[morganm]
Worked on a website today, wondering if I'll try and get a cheap domain for it currently it's just on Netlify

I really wonder how random websites end up with visible markup like literally <p> ... </p> around each paragraph e.g. https://tacos-jalisco.restaurants-world.com/
#
[morganm]
1. Somehow my brain computes this as "this place probably makes legit food" somehow
#
[morganm]
2. There are also clearfix classes absolutely all over it lol
#
btrem
If I had to guess, I'd say escape html, save, new element tags automatically inserted.
#
btrem
Probably needs to move to dev, lest Loqi get cross.
#

Restaurant websites are often wonderful because its usually a low priority of the owners but they want some kind of presence, so you get some interesting creations
#
btrem
^^ Yes, indeed.
#
btrem
Woops, weird autocorrect. That should have been a caret, not a smiley face. So not "I'm happy that restaurants are low priority." But rather, I agree, they're low priority.
#
btrem
And I say that as a (sadly) lifelong restaurant employee (server/bartender) who has sometimes also maintained my employer's website.
#
btrem
...that restaurants+' websites+ are low priority....
#
[social]
The `<p>` that is visible is usually copying code from a web template to a “place your copy here” and the restaurant site CMS doesn’t parse out markup.
#
[social]
This used to be really common. Restaurants and small law firms seemed to have the same problems.
#
btrem
That seems plausible.
#
[social]
The bottom of the “Tacos Jalisco” site has the disclaimer, “This si not the official website. Content is updated by the community. If you are the owner, please”
#
btrem
Some of you may recall I attempted to generate interest in a microformat for restaurant menus. It didn't go anywhere, alas.
#
[social]
This is below the “owner’s lowest priority”
#
btrem
When I did restaurant menus, they were not pdfs uploaded to a server. They were POSH.
#
btrem
Links no longer available. In once case, the restaurant went out of business. In another case, after I left, a new GM took over the site and changed the menus to...pdf. Ugh.
#

I remember there was a regular customer who was blind. He used to hold his phone to his ear while scrolling, then ordered. One time, I asked him what he was listening to. I was amazed to hear the answer: a screen reader reading the menu to him!

Around DC and the surrounding areas a lot of the international restaurants either don’t have sites, they “mobile order” sites (that are sketchy), or they are community run sites.
#
[social]
Often these can be insanely good.
#
[social]
A good standard restaurant templte with microformats would be awesome.
#
[morganm]
Yes +1, somehow my brain has learned and taken in these signals to mean interesting things about the quality of the food, authenticness of the food etc.
#
[morganm]
In my head Im imagining a counter example, perhaps the website for airport restaurant food generally, airports and brands put in some effort with their websites, somehow a inverse correlation with how desirable it actually is to eat and experience
#
btrem
[social]: No interest in it.
#
btrem
I should write up a short post explaining why I think that's the case.
#
btrem
One more thing for my TODO list. ;-)
#
[social]
Heh, I know that feeling
#
[social]
Some good quality authentic food are the places that have a basic website with photos of their menu board, name, location (maybe a map), and phone number. Things are laid out poorly. But, there is a page.
#

My favorite DC area taqueria (Taqueria Habenero (99% Mexican)) has been largely no frills, but incredibly good food. Tortillas made fresh by hand. They got a Michelin Bib award, but nothing changed at the original location, it is still just really solid food.
