https://thehistoryoftheweb.com/do-blogs-need-to-be-so-lonely/ raises the idea of a collective blog with several authors writing on their own accord. I love this idea!

collective blog sounds like social network
#
capjamesg
Not quite. I mean a few friends who can all contribute to the same website.

I like planets better
#
.pi.r2.
maintain individuality on each website, federate

multiple contributors also sounds zine-like. "invited contributors". a specific audience. curation over federation. (contributors would be free to publish on their own site first, why not)
#
[tantek]
I like planets and the idea of group blogs too where contributors are free/encouraged to publish on their own site first
#
[tantek]
Planets are automatic aggregators I believe while such a group blog would presumably have manual contributions
#
.pi.r2.
you can make a dedicated feed on a tag or some such to publish only what you want on the planet, retain control
#
[artlung]
I think of the https://octothorp.es and https://openmentions.com projects when I think of collective aggregation of blogs.
#
[artlung]
how hard is it to bounce posts off each other - comment, amplify, append, edit? This is why tumblr thrives to whatever extent it does - it was designed for that collaborative anarchy (though you can be plenty lonely on tumblr too)

[artlung]
But human interaction means human conflict is possible, and all the messiness of disagreement, misunderstanding. And to do that, moderation mechanisms must be available.

we had group blogs ages ago in the dawn of blogger, before it had comments. People would ask to join, or be invited by email.

idea for an aggregation / voting site: main character of the day
#
[tantek]
so that in the future, you can look up, hey who was the "main character" on this day last year or some random day in the past
#
[tantek]
or also, on which days was this person the "main character"

what is progressive enhancement
#
Loqi
progressive enhancement is the web development practice of building web pages, sites, apps so they are at least readable, and preferably allow for most if not all interactions, from any kind of browser, and optionally take advantage of additional capabilities (like various CSS & JS features) when available https://indieweb.org/progressive_enhancement
#
[tantek]
memooo if you're looking to learn HTML and CSS for your personal site, check out #indieweb-dev!
#
[mattl]
memooo: I made https://mattl.github.io/simple-html-file-generator/ which while it won’t teach you directly, it will give you a very basic page to start editing as you follow along with any examples.

re group blog, and specifically controlling what you publish on a planet (never heard that term before, but ok!): instead of a dedicated tag, you could instead use webmentions and a syndication class, a la indieweb news. Details will have to go to #dev to avoid irritating Loqi. ;-)

btrem, all of that has been discussed before, and there are some notes on the wiki about such brainstorms

what is a planet
#
Loqi
A planet, in the context of the indieweb, and blogs/feeds for even longer, is a site that aggregates feeds/updates from a variety of sources, typically focused on a particular topic or community https://indieweb.org/planet
#
btrem
Cool cool. I was merely pointing out that there's an alternative to the tag mentioned earlier (by .pi.r2.).
#
[mattl]
Wow I haven’t thought about a planet like that for ages.
#
[mattl]
I wonder if I have my little PNG of my head still.
#
[mattl]
Hm, I guess not.
