What are the most active times on here?
#
Loqi
It looks like we don't have a page for "most active times on here" yet. Would you like to create it? (Or just say "most active times on here is ____", a sentence describing the term)

I saw the "active times" on the website, thought I'd chance it. I'm at +11 TZ and will be fast asleep in 3 hours :)
#
capjamesg
Haha there are still plenty of people in Europe here!

(which is to say that there are people online right now / earlier)

So I'm browsing domain names and I'm a bit underwhelmed by the choices (and overwhelmed by the prices). Is the .me TLD a good choice for personal home pages on the indieweb?
#
capjamesg
knmonkey There is some advice and a lot of links on https://indieweb.org/top-level_domain to explore.

[edit] knmonkey There is some advice and a lot of links on https://indieweb.org/top-level_domain to explore.
#
capjamesg
Your choice of TLD is up to you. I chose .blog because I see my website as a blog.
#
capjamesg
Cost is certainly a factor. I pay ~$30 / year for my domain, but you can pay ~$10 / year for a domain or maybe less depending on which TLD and domain name you choose.
#
kbmonkey
Thanks capjamesg, that is good advice!
#
capjamesg
Happy to help 🙌

capjamesg[d] i just wanted to let you know I love your lil cat image on your blog, your list of website ideas, and I love that you left "pointless" out of your latest blog post title.

But thank you 🙂

Good luck with your building!
#

capjamesg[d]: Thanks! Finding this community has really lit a fire for me, and I'm really excited about it again. I used to write on Squidoo before it went defunct, and at that point, I didn't want to put content on anything I didn't own. Then things kinda went off track for a while.
#
crystalwoohoo
I had the viewpoint, but just didn't know about this community till recently
#

What are your tips on implementing microformats on an already existing site? Even though I have an h-card on my index, it's hidden due to design reasons (/ page in my site is a landing page)
#
capjamesg
crystalwoohoo[d]: Yeah! I have found the community around personal websites one of the best parts of having a website.
#
capjamesg
jbcrn[d] You may find https://indiewebify.me/ useful to validate that the microformats you add work as you expect.
#
Loqi
jbcrn capjamesg: we try to keep jargon (Microformats) out of this channel to make it more inviting to newcomers, can you move this to #indieweb-dev?
#
capjamesg
Yeah, we should move microformats discussion to the #indieweb-dev channel too 😄
#
jbcrn
oh sure, I'll move, sorry!
#
capjamesg
My first time seeing this on a blog post 😭
#
capjamesg
Maybe one reason not to embed from third-parties: the third-party may decide for some reason the content should not be available in your region.

[capjamesg] yes, I just got the same. I switched on my VPN and picked Amsterdam and saw the images (none of which were in any way controversial by even the most prudish of pearl-clutchers)

[tantek]
What is October
#
Loqi
October is the 10th month of the Gregorian calendar year and a month of several blogging challenges such as Blogtober, Inktober, Mathober, Weird Web October, also a month where some sites display a seasonal Halloween theme, or may be in reference to October CMS https://indieweb.org/October
#
[tantek]
crystalwoohoo, Blogtober might just be a hashtag without a central page
#
Loqi
does a happy dance!

[tantek]: Ok, awesome, thanks. 🙂 I think I'm going to finish out the month.

I recently archived the original blogtober post there, from way back in 2011 (!). I think it's pretty decentralized these days

Hi everyone!

Is there anything in particular you'd like to learn about?
#
gRegor
Great nickname. Now I have the capybara song in my head, haha
#
capybara240
capjamesg[d]: I just need to learn how to host a website and just the general stuff on making websites (I love to learn how to make websites interactive) most especially in the style of old internet
#
capybara240
I'm also happy that I shared some codes with my friends who are interested in making a css
#
Loqi
friendly reminder capybara240, would you mind moving this more technical conversation (CSS) to #indieweb-dev? thanks!

#

I also like going through Neocities.org for retro website inspiration.
#
capybara240
capjamesg[d]: I tried neocities before but even though I love css sometimes I don't like how I created my first webpage most especially from scratch because of the sizing but I will give it a try if I have time ^_^
#
capjamesg
Yeah. Making websites is a continual learning process!
#
capjamesg
My site has changed a lot over the years!
#
gRegor
I'm not directly familiar with neocities options, but in addition to some default themes, they might have a "blank slate" option so you can customize all the sizing and layout
#

anyone have a recommendation for a non corporate tech giant email service?
#
gRegor
I think Proton is a popular alternative
#
gRegor
Might find some pros/cons on the wiki or in posts linked from there
#
gRegor
what is email
#
Loqi
Email is a decentralized, non-web messaging transport, with user interfaces that enable a wide range of message formats and styles, and commonly used for account recovery by web sites and applications https://indieweb.org/email
#
[Roy]
yeah Proton looks pretty good!

So I moved site over to Blot.im (used to use and went to micro.blog but was never comfortable with it). Anyway... setting up sharing with open graph info and it's odd it works fine on BlueSky and Threads when sharing something but mastodon does not pick up anything. I dont use twitter anymore but was goign to put post up and that did not work there either. Strangest part is that I tested it at opengraph.dev and it shows it's right!

Yeah I think support varies by silo sometimes in weird ways. Could also be caching. The wiki page for OGP has some tools (Facebook at least) to make sure you get a fresh scrape of the page. #indieweb-dev is probably better to discuss OGP more.
