Good morning. I hope you're doing good. I recently read about the indieweb movement and I hope I can understand a bit more how it works
#

Being a musician, I've been looking for ways to share my passion by other means than social media. I've tried every platform, none of the felt like home. Having my personal website where I could share everything I love sounds like the best option for me, but that whole thing seems pretty scary for someone as non capable as myself on the internet. I don't know what a single thing about website creation to be fair.

trafalgarlyon: Understandable. If you really want to make your own site, which is a good goal, then I suggest to start by learning HTML. It's the building block of any website or platform. You can start making your site on your own computer, so not much else is needed (in the beginning)

I will likely seek a co-host though.
#
capjamesg
I need to think about it more.
#
[Al_Abut]
That’d be awesome. Let me know if you’re going down the pure audio route or want to kick the tires on a video setup. I’m one of those that’s fallen off the audio wagon and only get my podcasts through youtube now.
#
[Al_Abut]
Boo, hiss, I know I know, but it works really well for me and I can see why the video format is so popular with their player in particular.

#
CrowderSoup
Ana3: I'm in the same boat. Trying to get back into blogging / writing by tricking myself into it lol. I figure if I build my own blogging system I won't get bored of it.
#
[Al_Abut]
[capjamesg] audio only is a good move for keeping it in the doable realm. Video adds a lot of headaches if you’re not passionate about it.
#
[Al_Abut]
I’d still keep zoom on for coordination if you’re pairing up with someone that’s not in the same room, but I wouldn’t use that audio if you can avoid it. You’re in for a lot of editing anyway and a common setup is to have both hosts recording a nice clean signal on their own end.

[jeremycherfas]
OK, I’m all done with my Create Day project. I resisted the temptation to customise — for now — and just uploaded a very basic photo portfolio to http://photos.jeremycherfas.net I need to write up the workflow and notes to myself on deployment, and learn more about rsync with sftp

I am not understanding your question
#
[artlung]
Zoom is the only audio mechanism we have. The audio for zoom is not bridged. If that's your question.

Like are people chatting outside of the context of the zoom? Or is everyone talking centered around the zoom

#

crapidiot[d] This Discord is bridged with Slack and IRC. This means that messages are sent between Discord, Slack, and IRC. The bridge likely does not polls which means that your poll will only be seen by a limited number of community members who use Discord.

Also, have you read our digital gardening page?
#
capjamesg
What is digital gardening?
#
Loqi
It looks like we don't have a page for "digital gardening" yet. Would you like to create it? (Or just say "digital gardening is ____", a sentence describing the term)
#
capjamesg
What is a digital garden?
#
Loqi
🌿🪴 A digital garden is a particular practice of creating & growing an online and public IndieWeb presence that focuses more on topics & relationships than a timeline like blogs, has content of different levels of development, is imperfect and often a playground for experimentation, learning, revising, iteration, and growth for diverse content, perhaps interlinked with other digital gardens https://indieweb.org/digital_garden
#
crapidiot
I didn't see it!
#
crapidiot
Are those the only people?
#

Thanks everyone for the kind words.
#
[morgan]
I myself had a weird even if it was naive initial joining experience. Like you kind of join and especially with the web client with no history of the chat it felt very weird it wasn't immediately apparent to me there were 1401 people here now. People do seem to regularly join and expect immediate responses so maybe we should put in some kind of guard rails
#
[morgan]
I also do understand and validate the use of loqi and keeping dev chat generally to a different channel but like I feel somehow we could optimize the ushering experience a little
#
[tantek]
Or maybe we don't have to bend over backwards to cater to twitchy needing instant recognition/validation? I for one greatly appreciate the calmer, more chill vibes here as an escape from the default frantic distraction UIs out there
#
[morgan]
I get what your saying but in practical terms like every few days someone joins and is like "hey where is everyone" or "is this place dead" and it kind of feels weird to not respond in somewhat
#
[morgan]
It's healthy to take turns responding and welcoming but I just feel a label or two to the experience or somehow labelling the web client or a introductory message might set expectations
#
[morgan]
I'd be happy to be proactive and suggest a change but I'm not totally familiar with like the web client setup
#
[tantek]
No what I’m saying is it's not our job to teach people to chill
#
[tantek]
And it's ok if folks looking for a quick dopamine hit bounce
#
nsmsn
Had a good time seeing folks on Zoom for create day!
#
[morgan]
I'd feel a little better just if there was a like introductory message that was sent privately to people who joined maybe? Just like making it clear. I myself joined and found it disorienting
#
[morgan]
I have responded to people who post pointed questions before that seemed a little unaware In good faith and I might just stop doing that
#
[morgan]
Anyways happy Friday etc just minor quibbles

#
crapidiot
patsitive[d]: Ty!
#
crapidiot
osteophage[d]: It's less about an immediate response and more like "nobody seems to care enough to check or engage"
#
crapidiot
[morgan]: Correct. Nobody should come in without a warm welcome. That's how you grow a community. Otherwise it's called a clique
#
crapidiot
[morgan]: Lol real
#
[tantek]
Not real, quite the opposite based"real" info. As someone else already noted, over 1400 in Slack alone. That's far from a clique
#
[tantek]
Slow sustainable growth is greatly preferred to out of control capitalistic exponential growth. Much easier to sustain a cohesive community culture which IMO is far more important than instant replies to people who can't bother to do anything beyond presence query
#
[tantek]
What is no hello
#
Loqi
No Hello is a philosophy and website encouraging people to “Just ask the question” instead of saying "hi", "yo", "hello", "anyone there?", "you there?" in chat or direct messages (texts or DMs), with several IndieWeb community members encouraging this practice of getting to the point in their own communication protocols https://indieweb.org/no_hello
#
gRegor
The Discord has onboarding posts/channel descriptions from what I understand; have not signed into it myself. IRC/Slack/web chat are a bit different.
#
gRegor
I feel like Discord is probably the one with slightly different user expectations
#
[tantek]
Agreed. That's been my personal experience with most other Discords. Very much fast twitch disconnected people talking past each other with lots of bright colors on dark backgrounds. Feels kinda Vegasy
CrimeWave and audy joined the channel
#
[artlung]
that is *generally* true of Discords, but it is possible to create mechanisms in Discord to require doing some reading, and agreeing to codes of conduct before getting full access.
#
gRegor

#
gRegor
No agreements or role selection things, but some onboarding thing (we can probably discuss more in #indieweb-meta)
