stillawakeat3amImagine I'm in my late teens or early 20s. The internet has always been the big platforms - Instagram, X, sometimes Reddit, and not much else. I want to look further but I don't know where to start. I don't have a technical background at all. What pointers would you give me first?
stillawakeat3amIt seems like the internet is 5 platforms displaying screenshots of each other in infinite feeds. I know there's more out there, but search is broken. How do I break out of big tech?
stillawakeat3amOk, that's good advice, although it seems a little bit intimidating and technical. I'm used to everything just working out of the box. Is there anything else I should know about?
[snarfed]you don't need to be technical to have your own web site and your own domain, especially these days. start with something like https://micro.blog/ , which is no-code, integrates with the indieweb and many other networks and silos, and lets you register your own domain without needing to know anything technical like DNS or HTTP
stillawakeat3amYes, this is a hypothetical, but it's also something I'm giving a lot of thought to right now. How to make the small web more visible and accessible to people who are uncomfortable with the way social media platforms have come to dominate their lives, but at the same time are perhaps unfamiliar with tools like RSS.
osteophagehighVoltage, are you talking about how to help people find more indie websites, like indie search engines and directories, or do you mean introducing more people to the small web as a concept?
stillawakeat3amI'm thinking about how to help people find, organise, and return to content outside of social media platforms and over-commercialised SEO spam, in a way which requires a very shallow learning curve.
stillawakeat3amRight now I'm putting together a neocities site. I've noticed that the number of views displayed on neocities is in the hundreds, but I'm not getting hits according to goat counter (maybe I implemented it incorrectly). Has anyone else experienced this?
stillawakeat3amThat was my first assumption. I'll do some more testing and see if I can trigger a goat counter hit from my laptop. It seems to only detect hits from my phone so I think the issue is on me.
stillawakeat3amjust finished my neocities site. haven't added content yet, or set up the contact form (I think it's possible to do this on a static server with cloudflare but I need to read about it). feedback welcome π https://neonreflections.neocities.org/
stillawakeat3amMaking the thing a single page application seemed like a good idea until I read that older RSS clients struggle with fragmented URLs. I've done a little workaround but it's ugly and adds overhead when I upload articles.
stillawakeat3amThis is what goatcounter looks like by the way. I put it in to see how many people are using mobile phones vs. larger screens so I can figure out which group to cater to first. My background only really shows up on large screens so I want to do something special for mobile users at some point, if there are a lot of them. As you can see, my site is ragingly popular π€£
[tantek]aciccarello β do you have an unofficial download published somewhere of the version you've published so folks can try it out before it's approved?
stillawakeat3amIt was the neocities CSP injections blocking goat counter. I figured it out when it also blocked my contact form. I think it might be time to graduate to hosting on a VPS so that I can get mail and do some traffic analytics.
