[snarfed] joeshmo not at all. there are lots of fully hosted platforms that are very indieweb friendly, including helping you find and register a domain and handling all the technical parts (DNS etc) for you. eg https://micro.blog/ !
#
[snarfed] lots more on https://indieweb.org/web_hosting
#
osteophage General instructions here: https://indieweb.org/Getting_Started
#
osteophage But yeah there have also been a lot of conversations about how to make things easier: https://indieweb.org/easier
#
osteophage Personally my contribution was to make this guide: https://osteophage.neocities.org/essays/you-can-make-a-website

aspizu joeshmo: I'm a bit troubled by this mindset of dumbing things down. Why can't people learn how to make a website, its not tht difficult and saying that html is beyond the technical knowhow of most people is a bit insulting to their intelligence

aspizu [edit] joeshmo: I'm a bit troubled by this mindset of dumbing things down. Why can't people learn to be more technically literate, its not tht difficult and saying that html is beyond the technical knowhow of most people is a bit insulting to their intelligence
#
aspizu maybe its just the culture that has normalized leaving the technical things to the experts
#
aspizu fair
#
aspizu i feel like being in control of the means allows you to express yourself more
#
aspizu like the ability to choose the typeface, colors of your website, vs the defaults provided by a blogging site like medium that you can't change
#
aspizu whats the difference between fediverse and indie web
#
aspizu because both solve the issues of privacy and ownership
#
aspizu [edit] because both solve the issues of privacy, freedom and ownership
#
osteophage "Solve" seems like too strong a word.
#
aspizu i mean yes, if you really do not want to get technical, thats ur choice, but i feel like theres a stigma around being technical so people would tend to be scared of it

#
joeshmo I guess what I was trying to say is that it has to be as simple as a facebook post, instagram post or tiktok video.
#
osteophage Speaking off the cuff, I figure the fediverse and the indie web have some overlap at best, but you can definitely have one without the other. Federation is a way of connecting websites to other websites, and the indie web describes a web that's relatively independent and generally focused on personal websites.
#
osteophage Regarding onboarding, I wrote some more about that here: https://osteophage.neocities.org/essays/indie-web-priorities#onboarding
#
[snarfed] joeshmo yes! we think there are a number options that hit that mark. http://micro.blog, http://wordpress.com, etc. feel free to try them out!
#
aspizu a personal website where you aren't in control of the means would be kind of a misnomer
#
osteophage I think that's an oversimplification in some respects.
#
aspizu then that is not as easy as hitting post on twitter
#
aspizu isn't one of the goals of the atprotocol to make it easy to migrate hosts
#
aspizu another consequence of having people be more involved in the technical aspects of a website is more diversity in terms of creativity
#
aspizu neocities (and geocities) websites are so much more complex visually
#
aspizu uh .sh domain kinda expnsive

aspizu add 88x31 buttons
#
aspizu ulhar4409[d]: i used to go by my toki pona name on twitter until i changed it to a5pizu
#
aspizu statistically blue is everyones favourite color
#
aspizu i like to think of color as the medium
#
aspizu its not beautiful on its own, until its used to create things that are beautiful
#
aspizu blue being the most pleasnt to look at because theres a technical reason behind it
#
aspizu in nature, its the rarest color
#
aspizu so it makes sense why we like it so much

xdrramenx Hi! Just joined after a friend tipped me off to this. I have been very very slowly rebuilding/redoing my home server rack after moving and having a kid, and I have honestly not had the energy to get it back online. This has honestly given me a huge boost of inspiration as and direction ❤️

randomdsdevel [edit] > I can't reference where I said I'd make some notes about what I can look into doing in the spirit of this project the other day since this channel purposefully doesn't have logs enabled, but I've managed to write those 'some notes' down now: https://github.com/RandomDSdevel/discussions/discussions/2

[snarfed] [edit] unrelated, for anyone interested in Bluesky who doesn't have or want an account yet, users and posts are public via the API, you can check them out in https://blue.amazingca.dev/ and other similar third party tools on https://github.com/bluesky-social/atproto-ecosystem

@kevinmarks Standards are documentation, not legislation. They explain how to make your code do the same thing as mine. Sadly, we write them in an imperative voice, and don't explain how we chose them. @slightlylate has more to say: https://infrequently.org/2018/06/effective-standards-work-part-1-the-lay-of-the-land/ #Indieweb #microformats (twitter.com/_/status/1006674190831742976)

[morgan] Something new on my personal website: https://www.morganwebdev.org/posts/original-layering-machine/ . Ill be honest, this is mostly just a few pictures of "unboxing" a music board machine. But also, I tried out my first audio sample made with it and included it with a basic `<audio>` tag marked up with a caption and a download link. Taking notes for a more up-to date part 2 about how it works
