what are stickers
#
Loqi
A sticker is either a real life sticker for a project/band/place, or a photo reply (often a cartoon graphic chosen from a set) you send in direct messaging or add as a comment on some silos like Swarm https://indieweb.org/stickers

so ive built a layout for a website, and I have a few ideas for what I definitely want to put on there, but what do you guys recommend for putting on the site content wise?
#
spamt0n
ive heard about things like tools that post from your website to other social media apps, but there seems to be a lot of kinda intimidating info on the subject and I have no idea where to start.

#
[aciccarello]
Yeah, a lot of social media apps don't make it easy to cross-post
#
[aciccarello]
What is posse?
#
Loqi
POSSE is an abbreviation for Publish (on your) Own Site, Syndicate Elsewhere, the practice of posting content on your own site first, then publishing copies or sharing links to third parties (like social media silos) with original post links to provide viewers a path to directly interacting with your content https://indieweb.org/POSSE
#
spamt0n
[aciccarello]: yeah I saw that link, I tried reading the article but im still pretty lost 😭 .
#
spamt0n
I dont really use social media all that much, is it a thing people do to just post on the website and not anywhere else?

sorry for asking a lot of questions, you dont have to answer all these. I just feel like over the past week I havent made any progress on my website because its so overwhelming to see all the things you can/should do with a website.
#
[aciccarello]
spamt0n, totally. It's a lot of info and depends a lot based on your site. What services would you want to cross post to?
#
[aciccarello]
Also, we have the #indieweb-dev channel if you're looking to get more technical but this is a great place to start
#

I kinda deleted like a majority of my social media accounts recently, so im not really sure. I have some friends who use tumblr so maybe there?

I mainly wanted to make the website to post like blog stuff and also host the video games I make, but Im kinda worried about putting a lot of effort into making a project for indieweb, which is something I feel like I dont fully understand yet, yknow?

I love that idea of publishing on your own site. How about using it as a means to message individual people?

what is a direct message
#
Loqi
✉️ messaging refers to one user sending another user a message (memo, letter, txt, photo …) that they read sometime later; on the IndieWeb, either directly via a personal site, or from one site to another https://indieweb.org/direct_message
#
[tantek]
more there on that topic / question ri ^

Hi tantek - thank you but I made this very simple protocol this weekend and I just don’t know how to share it. If I wanted to send a message to you, I’d just sign it using my key, encrypt it using your key, then post it on my server. Then I’d just go GET yourserver.com/ping?f=me@me.com&id=23433&sig=234kksl - so the sig would be my digital signature of the id. You could respond with a 204 - No Content. Then you could grep your

spamt0n, yeah. I get a little ambitious sometimes with what I make so I know what you mean.
#
[aciccarello]
One thing that is nice about the IndieWeb is that you are welcome to only include the pieces you need/want
#
[aciccarello]
I'm really thinking about that contacts app idea james was talking about. Now I want to build something.
#
capjamesg
Yeah! I really want to make something too.
#
spamt0n
aciccarello, yeah thats cool about indieweb. I guess my hesitation comes from a fear of making a website thats nothing like other websites or just not useful, and ends up being forgotten.
#
spamt0n
I really like the idea of the indieweb and everything Ive seen so far, and I really want to participate, but im still trying to fully figure out what participation means.
#
[aciccarello]
I'd encourage you to build a space on the web that you enjoy. I post a lot of stuff that I don't think anyone really cares about
#
[aciccarello]
But you never know. My recipes on my site are mainly for me but it's fun to share them occasionally.
#
RI2
I think you should try the simplest thing to implement to get other people to try. I spent a lot of time taking things out of my projects.
#
[aciccarello]
I could be better about embracing less is more 😅
#
RI2
lol yeah me too. So many times I am stuck on something and I’m like “I don’t need this”.
#
spamt0n
aciccarello, you have recipes on your site? thats sick! I love cooking. I actually collect really old cookbooks, and I have one thats physically over a hundred years old.
#
RI2
My motto is “Delay, Delegate, Discard"
#
[aciccarello]
That's an old cookbook!
#
spamt0n
whats your website? I think it would be cool to look at those recipes some time.
#
spamt0n
geez, your website looks so much better than mine 😭
#
[aciccarello]
I've been tweaking it for like 9 years so it's been a long term project
#
[aciccarello]
I'd love to have yearly archives for comparison of what it used to look like
#
spamt0n
What I think I am gonna do is try to put a blog system, a section for webpage video games ive made, and a collection of circuit bending photography ive experimented with.
#
spamt0n
do you think thats a decent starting goal for a website, or am I being too ambitious?

aciccarello, after looking at others websites, i think I may need to take a graphic design class lol. all these look so cool and mine is still bright and looks like one of those old myspace pages.
#
[aciccarello]
I think that's great!
#
[aciccarello]
I haven't really redesigned my site in a while. I've focused on functional and clean but I'd love to add some more style.

what is the void?
#
Loqi
It looks like we don't have a page for "void" yet. Would you like to create it? (Or just say "void is ____", a sentence describing the term)
#
RI2
I see now we should show and not tell. But once we have a demo - where do we introduce it for others to try?
#
[aciccarello]
Feel free to share it here, or if it's more technical in the #indieweb-dev channel!
#
[artlung]
spamt0n, welcome! You wrote "_I guess my hesitation comes from a fear of making a website thats nothing like other websites or just not useful, and ends up being forgotten." - - -_ this is always a risk, there's no guarantee of audience or lasting impact. A lot of us do it anyway, for whatever reason makes sense to us, ultimately my site and tools I've build need to be useful to me.

I've been working on a new wiki page trying to articulate "creating to the void" - here's how it looks as of now. https://indieweb.org/the_void
#
spamt0n
artlung, yeah that makes sense.
#

you are right, my first website probably isnt gonna be perfect no matter what I do, so I shouldnt let that get in the way of me trying new things and improving.
