bearina.Good morning, everyone! I decided my next step for my personal website is making a blog. I’d like it to be a digital garden if that makes sense. Does anyone here have one or has a cool link for people who write about them or have one themselves? I’d like to get some inspiration
Loqi🌿🪴 A digital garden is a particular practice of creating & growing an online and public IndieWeb presence that focuses more on topics & relationships than a timeline like blogs, has content of different levels of development, is imperfect and often a playground for experimentation, learning, revising, iteration, and growth for diverse content, perhaps interlinked with other digital gardens https://indieweb.org/digital_garden
LoqiThe timeline briefly documents key IndieWeb (and influencing thereof) terms/ideas/concepts, inventions, implementations, specifications, events, and other achievements; people involved, and dates/URLs for each https://indieweb.org/timeline
[Murray]Anyone have any good ideas/tips on picking email domains? I want to shift my main email address to a domain I control, but I don't want to use my website's domain (too long), so wondering if there are any cute TLDs or something others have used to shorten domains
[tantek]there may be good security & privacy reasons to pick a different domain from your personal website domain as well. not everyone you want or need to give an email address to is someone that you want to by default make it obvious what your personal website is
[Murray]yep, that had also occurred. Leaning towards something that potentially can be used by a few other people in my family, too. But of course TLDs are all either very expensive or already taken, hence wondering if there are any nice options (far too many to search through 😄)
[tantek]I'd still say especially for email stick with a .net or .com or even .org. All the "weird" TLDs seem even weirder (less reputable) in the context of an email address. Like reputationally look like spammers. I think on one project we even blocked all .biz because 100% of emails from that TLD were spam/abuse
[Murray]that's fair, but I basically use email a handful of times a year, so I'm not overly worried about that. And the price difference is ridiculous. I am leaning .uk, as they are cheap and still seem pretty "legit"
[morgan]One of the main things I chose about when I chose my domain for email is how easy it is to pronounce over the phone when interacting with services that may require it to onboard you in. That was kind of the test I applied when I chose it heh
[morgan]My first name is French and slightly uncommon and a few times I got enough odd reactions or misspellings I really decided to prefer my middle name
[Murray]I have an Anglicised French surname, so I feel that. Also a key consideration, and definitely worth mentioning 🙂 (My old surname also routinely fell foul of the Scunthorpe Problem, so I also went by my middle name for some time in professional circles 😅 )

[Michael_Kupiet]I do have an email domain. I picked a very long one because it was clever— I got http://thegatesofdawn.org so I could piper@ on there. Kinda wound up regretting that as the years dragged on. After that I got http://lll.tl to compensate; which I was very happy with, until the Timor Leste TLD registrar jacked up the prices unrealistically high.
