Recent on my personal website: I have been inspired on the web recently by an open source project supporting my local foodbank, IndieWeb events like Homebrew Website Clubs and also a learning from studying a specific website, the home website of the International Association of Accessibility Professionals.

if you feel like sharing a link to an indieweb-relevant post in chat, you should really submit it to indienews for broader distribution https://news.indieweb.org/en/submit
#
[morgan]
Right on. Definitely wanted to share some appreciation for how educational the virtual meetings can be, in case it encourages more people to consider attending
#
[morgan]
I think Ill submit that to news

[capjamesg] [social] As promised, I've updated the 'trades' page with a section about a writing circle and added myself as interested! Anyone else who is, feel free to add yourself! https://indieweb.org/trades

The other thing to do with indieweb related posts is to hashtag them #indieweb and they'll show up in #indieweb-stream. Like chat is not for link dumping, chat is for discussions. Pretty sure we've talked about this before
#
[tantek]
A good rule of thumb is if a link is relevant to an *existing discussion* then it can be helpful to that discussion. The opposite (non-sequitors) tends to be harmful to discussion

Ok would someone change the banner I see "What's new on your personal website? Anything user/content related"
#
[morgan]
I literally read that and think hmm, I posted something new on my personal website, Ill share this here, hoping it sparks some discussion
#
[morgan]
But yes places for the things exist I can do that
#
[morgan]
Also a significant amount of time had passed since the last message, in my mind not making it a non sequitor. Aarons suggestion was more helpful indiewebify the usage more

Yes that's a good point that banner is probably worth updating. Which client did you see that on?

Have we ever had a discussion on the downsides of centralising your identity around one personal website (i.e. personal and professional)?
#
[capjamesg]
Like, a personal website may be oriented around your blog / thoughts and not necessarily what is relevant to an employer.
#
[capjamesg]
And equally a professional website may be oriented toward projects / goals and not necessarily something you would share with friends.
#
[capjamesg]
I think the existence of LinkedIn proves the value of some kind of separation. I wondered if there has already been thinking on these lines as it relates to websites.
#
[Murray]
There isn't a huge amount on the page, but I know this often gets discussed in terms of website vs portfolio: https://indieweb.org/portfolio
#
[tantek]
capjamesg, rather than focusing on the downside, there are folks how have focused on the use-case of having a personal silly domain and a professional "real name" domain
#
[tantek]
folks who* have focused
#
[Murray]
^ that's what I used to do. Since I changed my name, I've moved my CV (the only part of the "real-name" domain that really mattered) onto a subdomain of my main site
#
[capjamesg]
That’s a good framing. One blogger I follow has a separate professional website that is relatively sparse and a richer blog that is for personal use.
#
[capjamesg]
Is there a word for representing yourself differently depending on the intended audience? Another example that comes to mind is posting different things privately vs. publicly, perhaps under the same name or one under a pseudonym.

Context switching?
#
[tantek]
facets? code switching?
#
[Murray]
I think code switching is what I meant 😄
#
[capjamesg]
Oooh I haven’t researched that topic before.
#
[capjamesg]
Thank you!
#
[tantek]
capjamesg, not exactly the same https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Code-switching but code switching is something many people do between work and non-work contexts. especially if they're a minority / underrepresented demographic, working in a dominant demographic company
#
[tantek]
in its extreme, "LinkedIn speak" could be an example of such "language alteration"

[capjamesg] I've certainly had many, many internal discussions on the concept. As I've mentioned a couple times lately, for most of my life I've kept my professional and personal online identities rigorously separate. Until deciding in 2023 to bring the walls down, there was I believe only one single page on the internet where my website of 20 years and real last name both appeared on the same page, and that was very deeply buried in an

ancient email list archive. For a long time I even changed the place names of cities in any autobiographical stories I related on my website, and for a while referred to San Francisco only as "Vapid City", so as not to allow for that kind of forensics. I still have a separate professional site and a personal site, although they point to each other in a couple of places. And none of my social media accounts are in my real name, although
#

they're all close variations.
#
[tantek]
Interesting approach. Adding just a bit of entropy or friction to thwart simple fully automated systems. Identity friction
#
[Michael_Kupiet]
Exactly. It used to be enough friction to intentionally thwart humans. (In fact, for the first couple of years of Google, you got completely different results if you googled for "Mike" rather than for "Michael" and I really liked it that way.) But part of the idea when building my current website was to stop segregating or operating out of fear that someone who knew me from one area of my life wouldn't understand some other area of my

life. In fact the only real reason I still have a separate professional site is for SEO purposes.
#

I talk about code switching a ton with folksonomy as people learn each others terms and then often will use the other party’s terms in an attempt for clarity and understanding.
