ok, I added "2026-04-22 [https://calibreapp.com/blog/building-our-beloved-hex-map Delivering a dynamic hexagonal world map in just 10kb]" to the "See Also" section of /maps https://indieweb.org/wiki/index.php?diff=111070&oldid=106187

it does make me curious about alternatives to Mercator projection hex/square block maps

This map in MacOS cliipart I saved in October 2001 (according to internet archive). I just kinda liked it. https://smorgasborg.artlung.com/world_clipart/

https://cdn.artlung.com/images/flightnav_web_lg.gif has a map on it. I wrote a (Classic) ASP frontend which used some kinda object interface to use a compiled command line application (VB?) a developer provided to my company. Or maybe that was the one where we had been provided an excel spreadsheet which had elaborate calculations we translated to ASP I'm probably conflating 3 different projects.

gRegor++ for indiebookclub-dot-biz updates! having book search within IBCDBz really streamlines things. http://indiebookclub.biz++

Thanks [schmarty]! Any thoughts on that updated form? My main concern is if it's too cluttered or too much information compacted together (more vertical space needed?)
#
[schmarty]
i like them compact, though i agree there is something about the vertical rhythms that make these appear to run together. i'm no designer, but something to try might be making the label size a tiny bit smaller and bolder and bringing it a little closer to the field it is labeling?
#
gRegor
Mm, good idea. A bit tricky with the flexbox layout, but I could at least bring it closer to "Timezone offset" which is the longest field label

Zegnat, that Calibre map has me thinking that its target is more games rather than dataviz
#
[tantek]
I keep coming back to a grid, so that the map, however coarse, has a clear translation into coordinates, which the hexgrids do not
