Nice! I will definitely participate there as soon as I implement my own Webmention server.

What does one do when they hit a dead end on a webring? It's a horrible feeling

Build a website to add to it ;)
#
[morgan]
But yeah that can be annoying
#
jorisvandijk
No- I mean someone has subscribed to the ring, but didn't add the controls. It's sad
#
jorisvandijk
There's more to see, but no way to get there
#
[morgan]
Oh I see! Hmm. Not sure how to fix actually
#
jorisvandijk
No way, I'm afraid. Go back a page, pick a different ring and move on there or pick random if the ring has it

sometimes rings will have a directory page with all the members listed, so you can still find the next member even when the ring is broken. but I do find it a little sad to browse them that way

Good suggestion. I agree, it's not the most fun way of browsing

This is a good really interesting post about the Pope on social networks. https://connectedplaces.online/reports/fr164-the-pope-on-defederation/
#

ok, I added "https://connectedplaces.online/reports/fr164-the-pope-on-defederation/" to the "See Also" section of /principles https://indieweb.org/wiki/index.php?diff=111201&oldid=109287

[KevinMarks] it's a poorly written article. It takes too many words to say too little. Can you give me a list of one line reasons "why decentralised social networks keep struggling" instead? (also why are people impressed with poorly written posts like this?)
#
[tantek]
like don't make me (the reader) do the work of sifting through so much chaff in your writing to find the wheat
#
[KevinMarks]
Fair, though he is summarising a 40k word papal blog post

“What is striking is that the two ecosystems struggle in opposite directions, where the fediverse has subsidiarity without solidarity, all autonomy and no way to govern the commons, and the atmosphere has solidarity without subsidiarity, a commons that almost no one shares responsibility for. The fediverse does not need more servers, it needs reasons for them to act like they owe each other something. The atmosphere does not need better
#
[KevinMarks]
tools, it has those, it needs the autonomy those tools enable to actually be taken up.” is the core para, but you need subsidiarity defined first (which maps to the w3c principle of priority of constituencies https://www.w3.org/TR/design-principles/#priority-of-constituencies)
#
[tantek]
lots of buzzwords and jargon there, not much of a clear point still
#
[tantek]
thanks for making my point. stuff like "subsidiarity without solidarity" are you f'ing kidding me? who writes like that? for what audience?
#
[tantek]
I read this and see someone trying to seem smart but not actually smart (as in not actually a good communicator)
#
[artlung]
I find that readable enough. It also helps I have context for both ATmosphere and Fediverse and have thought about the social and technical arrangements of both. Also Tantek, you can simply say you find it impenetrable and unappealing without declaring everything with keywords you don't like to be unworthy of a read.
#
[morgan]
I was going to make a comment that the unworthy comment over text communication does seem a bit rough, probably would come across fine with context/over speech, but yeah its fair to say this reads like a rough first draft in parts
#
[tantek]
yes the lowercasing of "atmosphere" didn't help. referring to a proper noun with proper capitalization would help too.

I appreciate that the Papal encyclical got people talking about web things.
#
[tantek]
it's not about disliking any particular keywords, it's disliking the excessive use of jargon and/or "academic" or complex language which harms communication
#
[artlung]
I nearly indienews’d it,

same reason we nudge folks from this channel to #indieweb-dev

“Harms communication” is overbroad, no? You find it to be ineffective communication. And your judgement carries some weight, given you are a writer and communicator. Though Kevin shared it as interesting and so we have at least one person for whom it did the job of communication. As to the needs for writing and communication in this chat, they may differ from other venues. Also, James’ writing event is tomorrow, audience and jargon would
#
[artlung]
great topics there.
#
[tantek]
you're right, ineffective or self-defeating is more accurate. "harms communication" is overblown if not overbroad.

i'll put a post together now to get it submitted to indienews -- but i'm unfamiliar with huff duff and... how the newsletter entry system works 😅
#
[Zephyr]
thank ya!
#
[artlung]
[Zephyr] I submitted the SoundCloud url as but something by you would be great with context!
#

As indienews
#
[Zephyr]
ah thanks! ok i'm on it
#
gRegor
I tried to Huffduffer it, but soundcloud doesn't (easily) expose an audio file URL
#
gRegor
what is hufduffer
#
Loqi
It looks like we don't have a page for "hufduffer" yet. Would you like to create it? (Or just say "hufduffer is ____", a sentence describing the term)
#
gRegor
what is huffduffer
#
Loqi
Huffduffer is a tool for creating podcasts out of audio files from around the web, built by Jeremy Keith https://indieweb.org/Huffduffer
#
[Zephyr]
ooh i've got a better link - one sec
#
[schmarty]
good opportunity for zephyr to download and re-host an mp3 file of the segment? 😏
#
gRegor
One or the other is probably fine, both show up in the newsletter
#
gRegor
true!
#
[Zephyr]
hahah fair enough! i do have an mp3 file but it'll take me a minute to prep everything - i'll follow up a bit after i'm done with work today (around 20:00 UTC)
