lecaseus Hey all! Thought I’d say hi to the community once in a while. I’ve just finished setting up my guestbook, sitemap, and rss yesterday, and then wrote a blog today ^_^ Does anyone have any personal non-technical blogs I could follow? I’d like to read a bunch while I’ve nothing to do yet
#
[capjamesg] Hello! You might enjoy perusing https://blogroll.org/
#
[capjamesg] I like going to that site and searching for a keyword that interests me, or scrolling randomly to see what I can find.
#
[capjamesg] What is your domain name lecaseus?
#
lecaseus [capjamesg]: Ohh nice I’ll be sure to check it out nyahaha
#
lecaseus [capjamesg]: mine is https://cheztervargas.com
#
[capjamesg] Amazing!
#
lecaseus Thank you! Though I can’t really get into specifics in this channel, maybe in indieweb-dev, I’m just really proud of my site’s backend work in C++ haha!
#
lecaseus Welp, off I go exploring ye olde blogroll

#
bearina. No, not Letterboxd 🙁 Does anyone know an indie alternative? Something like bookwyrm but for movies or even series?

doesnm quick search gives this https://github.com/rafaelcaricio/fedimovies

BinaryDigit hi :)
#
[capjamesg] Hii!
#
BinaryDigit hi james!
#
ZodiacalComet greetings
#
BinaryDigit figure I'd join here since I'm always on IRC
#
BinaryDigit Yep i'm at https://binarydigit.net/ :D
#
bearina. Hi!
#
bearina. Hey BinaryDigit, love your website and art!
#
Loqi A review is a post evaluating a product, service, or experience, usually involving a written description, sometimes with summary numerical evaluations, also known as just a rating if it’s just a single numerical value or iconic representation like stars (★★★★☆) https://indieweb.org/review
#
BinaryDigit thank you bearina!
#
[artlung] I talked about https://www.are.na as unique because when you log in or even logged out it does nearly zero "FIND PEOPLE TO FOLLOW" hawking to you. I think Nick S called it a "quiet onboarding experience."
#
[artlung] Tabitha.computer uses http://Are.na as part of PESOS tooling which is clever

bearina. Thank you gRegor++
#
bearina. I mainly use it as my film diary so I’ll have to look how to duplicate that. In general I like neoDB so far
[social] joined the channel
#
[pcarrier] I use http://trakt.tv to track my movies and shows
cotsuka and [Al_Abut] joined the channel
#
[Al_Abut] [gRegorLove] ooo, that's an interesting idea. I wonder if [benji] did anything like that - a feed reader for movie reviews from the blogs you choose. I’d definitely love to see that variant.
#
[Al_Abut] [pcarrier] I just hooked up a Trakt integration for myself this weekend to act as a sort of db for my letterboxd lists. It has an API that returns nicely formatted info about a movie and then I layer in the parts that are missing that I care about (public and private commentary, first time watch vs repeat viewings, etc)

#
[Al_Abut] I made these three public lists and a few private ones this weekend as a precursor to mirroring them on my site:

#
bearina. [Al_Abut] I see you also liked Green Room, it’s a fantastic movie
#
[Al_Abut] @bearina I just saw it this weekend! It was a major hole in my game and I put it off forever because I didn't want to be sad about Anton Yelchin :(
#
[Al_Abut] It especially strikes home because I'm a UX guy by trade and a car guy as a personal interest, so it upsets me that he passed away so young because of a flawed design of the automatic transmission in of Jeep Cherokees of that era
#
[mikemai2awesom] sir patrick stewart was great in the green room
#
[Al_Abut] [mikemai2awesom] he was unreal. I love when Shakespearean actors play modern villains, like Sir Ben Kingsley in Sexy Beast.
#
[mikemai2awesom] yes!
#
[mikemai2awesom] oooh, your one last job list ❤️
#
[mikemai2awesom] no love for fast and furious? (JK, that would just dominate your list, hahaha)
#
[mikemai2awesom] i am on slack. how do i give karma?
#
[mikemai2awesom] Al Abut++
#
[capjamesg] You’ll need to tag Al, like this [Al_Abut]++
#
[mikemai2awesom] thanks for the lists [Al_Abut] ++
#
[mikemai2awesom] thanks for the lists [Al_Abut]++
#
[mikemai2awesom] there you go
#
[Al_Abut] Aww, thanks!!!
#
[capjamesg] Yay!
#
[Al_Abut] So glad you liked those lists, they were honestly just what was top of mind when testing out the idea of a pipeline for local db > trakt > letterboxd > my site
#
[Al_Abut] The private lists aren't anything mysterious - they're just so I can be candid about which movies I disliked and why. Not the kind of thing I’ll ever make public because there's enough of that in the world already.
#
[mikemai2awesom] most of my lists are old. i haven't kept up to date, but i don't think this one needs updating https://letterboxd.com/mikemai2awesome/list/modern-chinese-cinema-2000s/
#
[Al_Abut] Oh this is rad
#
[Al_Abut] That actually will help me fill in some major gaps in my game. My personal library of Chinese films is so small and frozen in time from the hey day of 90’s action films that we would pass around on tape (literally)
#
[Al_Abut] One of my college buddies works is a Chinese-American fight choreographer in LA
#
[Al_Abut] His sifu was our fight choreographer back when I did a run of plays in college for a few years
#
[Al_Abut] He had hands made of pure lighting. Here's a short clip of him in action:
#
[Al_Abut] https://youtu.be/Vfv0XfHc5k0
#
[tantek] would #indieweb-random be better for the purely film talk? worth adding public Letterboxd lists people have shared to the https://indieweb.org/Letterboxd#IndieWeb_Examples section though!
#
[Al_Abut] [tantek] totally! Sorry, didn't even realize which channel we were in.
#
[Al_Abut] It's easy to spin it back to indieweb though - just go behold the beauty that is [Trevor_Morris]'s movie page:
#
[Al_Abut] https://www.trovster.com/movies
#
[capjamesg] Ooh that page is well designed!
#
[Al_Abut] Reviews, blog posts and genre navigation, all blended into one feed. It’s perfect.
#
[Al_Abut] [trovster]++
#
[Al_Abut] I love how the genre pages are descending order from the highest rated:

#
[Trevor_Morris] And most importantly, the cta for the IndieWeb Movie Club for July. In fact, I have JUST finished the biography about the man himself.
#
[Trevor_Morris] I've also recreated movie LISTS on there. Which is a mix from Letterboxd and TMDB - although the latter is very clunky so I don’t update them there any more.
#
[Al_Abut] Oh nice! Also: I just a few days ago lined up the next movie club zoom and need to make an event page for Sat July 25th
#
[Trevor_Morris] If you click search, you get a more granular search for movies. I should really find a way to make that more discoverable. Maybe a popover here would work.
[Trevor_Morris] joined the channel
#
[Al_Abut] We're averaging about quarterly for the movie zooms and it gives us a good number of films to talk about. Hopefully it being later in the month also means people will have time to revisit Chaplin but if not, at least it’ll whet the appetite to revisit it soon.
#
[Al_Abut] [trovster] I'm on mobile and just went “ooo” when I saw your extra controls from searching, then clicked into lists. So many well-crafted and thoughtful UI touches in here, you've put a lot of work into it.
#
[Trevor_Morris] I assumed the July zoom would be for the June movie? So people have the full month to watch it. That's what caught me out on the last zoom, which went into Arrival.
#
[Al_Abut] Yes, July zoom will be for June and also May. Any discussion about the July movie is a bonus, like a teaser to get people excited about it.
#
[Trevor_Morris] Perfect 🙂
#
[Al_Abut] I'm not strict about the agenda. I think last time we probably burned a solid 30 minutes just on favorite snacks? Haha
#
[Trevor_Morris] Oh! The Network and Spiderman, an interesting pairing.
#
[Al_Abut] Still remember [artlung]'s hot dog with jalapeños combo, that was a bold choice 😉
#
[Al_Abut] [Trevor_Morris] yeah! I nudged/coerced [Mike] into picking a serious movie, then lightened it up with a fun one right after.
#
[Trevor_Morris] I hope the "theme" month (Chaplin) not a specific movie is OK!
#
[Al_Abut] Totally!
#
[Al_Abut] Honestly any excuse to explore your site is fun for me
#
[Al_Abut] You're like a one man letterboxd
#
[Trevor_Morris] Thanks! I've been concentrating on improving the photos section, especially now I've using my drone more again.

#
[Al_Abut] Oh cool! That reminds me to do another photo popup too
#
[Al_Abut] I like the “cast of characters” tagging of photos, never seen that before on a personal site:
#
[Al_Abut] https://www.trovster.com/photos/19282077063
#
[Trevor_Morris] They click through to my (relatively hidden) "Life" section, which shows all photos by people, pets, places and things…
#
[Trevor_Morris] They were inspired by Chris Glass' "folks" section.
#
[Trevor_Morris] https://www.trovster.com/life if you care!
#
[Al_Abut] https://indieweb.org/person-tag
#
[Al_Abut] [trovster] that's amazing! And now I just realized there's a microformat for tagging people because of course there is.
