burgeonlabI think maybe they're more so agentic AI instead of LLMs/chatbots, which is why they're 'behaving' that way. I appreciate the write ups, [tantek]++
[social]I need to get to some of the longer more complicated posts on Personal InfoCloud site, which was one of my bigger goals. It has WordPress under it now and the block model for it trips me up at times.
burgeonlabHiya, I wrote a completely new 404 page after revamping my site. Thought I'd share it here: https://burgeonlab.com/404 Would love to hear any feedback.
morganwebdevHey WinnerWind! I have an email to send you sometime long delayed, life got pretty hectic busy. My site is going along well I added a new slash page about audio gear
WinnerWindmorganwebdev: oh my god! dont take this as an insult but i completely forgot about that thread, haha. Hope i can read that e-mail sometime! no rush, i know sending emails is hectic
ruecharlii asked for some help with audio issues on my site on a learnhtml discord server and was told that sites playing sound effects is not normal and is annoying,, is this the common opinion here also ?
[capjamesg]I was on a website a week or two ago that played a sound effect that, to me, sounded like a computer fan (that was probably not the intent of the creator). I was worried my computer was overheating until I realised it was the website I had opened.
keplerruecharli, i would say there's a line between tasteful use of sounds on a website, and abrupt or disruptive use of sounds. the biggest complaint i'd raise often is that most webmasters make their noises **too loud** more than anything else
kepleri think it's quite endearing to have soft background music, or clicky noises when someone visits links/presses buttons. my line is drawn when those noises are so loud they override everything else playing on my computer or startle me
kepleronly one of my websites features any kind of autoplay, and i used audacity to manually decrease the decibel of all the tracks because i really didnt like how loud it was: https://thenothingness.space/
keplerif you find them endearing, pleasing, and not disruptive, i vote for keeping them. there are ways for visitors to mute their tab, but if you want to be considerate, you could add a toggle that makes the sounds play or not :]
ruecharli(context: its a library-book-themed site) for example my guestbook is a library borrowing card thing. theres a little paper sound when you pull it out. when you're done typing, you stamp the card and it plays a little stamp sound and a little paper sound as it goes back in the sleeve
kepleri think that's awesome and i'll throw hands with whoever told you "not normal and is annoying". i think that in particular is a wonderful way to add a sense of tangibility to an otherwise intangible digital site :]
ruecharliim split on having page flipping sounds - its difficult (because each page is a new link and audio doesnt play during loading) and it might get annoying after a while
keplerif you wanted to accomplish something like that, perhaps looking into iframes or javascript/pure-CSS tabs could help mitigate the issue of pageload audio disruption!
ruecharli"discord replacing forums" yeah i agree ........... it is the last social media (besides mastodon) that i have an account for, and id really like to delete it
keplerit's probably one of the reasons that i HAVE made so many fansites for the things i like, because i want so badly to offer other places to find people who like the same things
kepleri spent like 4 hours yesterday bouncing between ffxiv, writing concepting for a project, and talking to a friend for feedback on said project. and also updating webrings and stuff LMAO
keplerdiscord, however, is a private program/private company, you can only have a discord server on the discord platform. anyone, with the hardware and the know-how, can set up an irc server (or network, multiple servers connected to each other)
kepleri may need a minute i don't know if i installed putty on this new computer yet :o but i will send you a friend request on discord to give you the details :]
