hello
#
Talesmith
Hello. I have an exciting indie project for a distributed social network. No algorithm, your own node on your own domain. Privacy of data, you choose who you connect with. I am looking for passionate people to try it out.
#
brennan_
did you make it by hand or use an LLM
#
Loqi
hey Talesmith, brennan_: it seems like this conversation is more appropriate for #indieweb-dev (node, LLM)
#
Talesmith
its a social network, not for developers
#
Talesmith
there is overlap though lol
#
doesnm
most social networks are asocial walled gardens
#
brennan_
facts tbh
#
Talesmith
this is anti that. Decentralised, distributed, FOSS
gordinator joined the channel
#
doesnm
anti are just own selfhosted blog on your website :)
#
brennan_

#
Talesmith
a blog is not a social network its a publisher model
#
brennan_
my blog has webmentions, a guestbook, and a comment section. seems pretty networked and social to me
#
Talesmith
So does a website. Its got content, can have comments and a guestbook, but we call a blog a blog because it has feeds with a micro format other than html. But yes we could also say, that ftp is a social network
#
brennan_
so social networks don't have microformats? i feel like diogenes is gonna step in with a featherless chicken
#
brennan_
anyways you didn't post a link yet

[indienews] New post: "Reading as participation in the indie web" https://jamesg.blog/2026/08/27/reading-as-participation-in-the-indie-web
#
WinnerWind
[capjamesg]: nice blog post! i think that reading too is an essential part of the indieweb but im not sure if i can agree with the idea that just reading makes you part of the indieweb. i think there's layers to "being part" of it
#
doesnm
my website are just scary page and list of links. Can't make yourself blog because lost fantasy or smth like this
#
[capjamesg]
WinnerWind that is a good articulation. I didn’t state it this way in the post, but there is something of a funnel from reading -> exploring/discussing/asking questions -> building.
#
[capjamesg]
(where “building” = anything someone wants to do with their site)
#
WinnerWind
[capjamesg]: absolutely, there's a funnel to it. can't make good writers without readers. that said, i dont think its as linear as you might thing
#
[capjamesg]
That’s a good point too. We definitely bounce around a bit before we commit to a new hobby/idea/project.
#
WinnerWind
anecdotal evidence isnt proof of fact but i personally never read a blog before starting my own ^_^```. i do read nowadays
#
[capjamesg]
It took me ages from thinking about playing the guitar to actually learning.

is the essential "layer": at least own a domain, with rel="me" somewhere, even if that'just an email address, to allow you to login to indieweb "things" and demonstrate you're not a bot when commenting/mentioning others?
#
[capjamesg]
If you have a website, you’re in the indie web.
#
[capjamesg]
There are hundreds of thousands of websites on Neocities, for example, that don’t have custom domains, or rel=me, etc. and yet are a vibrant part of the community.
lavandula joined the channel
#
doesnm
maybe i should add rel=me to /links
#
thamara_k
[capjamesg] as a new member in the community this is my reading of it, too. The tools and protocols being secondary to the ethos. I recently made an /indieweb page on my site, on it I said "Joining the movement is easy. If you have a personal website, you are already on the IndieWeb."
#
[capjamesg]

#
wturrell
(sort of following-on from earlier) has anyone attempted to gauge the size/growth of the IndieWeb? Or relatively spread by country etc? Did a bit of searching; didn't find much…
#
[snarfed]
wturrell first you'd have to define the indieweb 😎
#
[snarfed]
we don't try too hard to do that precisely. we're generally pretty big tent, we include anyone with their own web site. ideally on their own domain, but we're not strict or exclusive. so, arguably a big chunk of the web
#
[snarfed]
(I need to do better at catching up with scrollback before replying 😁)
#
wturrell
I'm mainly curious if "we" think it's having much impact, e.g. if enough young people are signing up, or people outside the traditional tech industry. or, I don't know, if webmention or microformat adoption is growing etc.
#
[capjamesg]
These are good questions. I don’t think it’s good to measure the IndieWeb by the growth of any technology. What matters most is people seeing websites as a way to express some part of themselves.
#
[capjamesg]
Making a website isn’t appealing to everyone, but there are certainly many people here and in the wider community who aren’t working in tech and have websites.
#
[capjamesg]
Re: much impact. I don’t think the IndieWeb should be measured by how many people it is reaching. It should be measured in how much people feel that having a website is useful to them. For me, having a website has fundamentally changed the way I use the web, and I suspect many people in here would attest to how much personal significance their site has had.
#
[capjamesg]
From my perspective, if people are having fun making websites, and are open to helping others start websites, the IndieWeb is doing a good job.
#

weird question, what is this group's perspective on things like squarespace, carrd, strawpage, rentry etc
#
kepler
you didnt! i sent it after your message
#
WinnerWind
[capjamesg]: i think nowadays its really easy to get started making your own website, especially with the sheer volume of templates and pre-built SSGs that exist
#
kepler
i just got in an elevator right as i sent it
[pcarrier] joined the channel
#
[pcarrier]
ideally you're in control of your website and can change providers. that makes squarespace less than ideal
#
[capjamesg]
The easier a service makes it to get your data out in a way that you can use, the better.
#
kepler
pretty sure all of these sites are falteringly difficult if not impossible to do
#
kepler
can't export carrd or strawpage designs as any form of actual document afaik lol
#
WinnerWind
[pcarrier]: most providers don't let you export :(
#
[pcarrier]
host hosting services do?
#
[capjamesg]
Squarespace does allow an export of all your content that you can then import into something like Ghost.

[capjamesg] good to know, thanks
#
kepler
appreciated [capjamesg]
#
[capjamesg]
kepler If I were speaking to someone who wanted to start a website today, I’d probably recommend Ghost for an all-in-one solution that has features useful for professional publications, Bear Blog for writers, omg.lol for someone who wants a general web presence, http://micro.blog for people who want writing and a social aspect, Neocities for someone who wants to make a single web page, and maybe a static site system for someone who wants to
#
[capjamesg]
do a bit more coding.
#
wturrell
the point Manton Reece makes in the 'indie microblogging' book is that data exports are typicaly limited to odd or 'restricted' bespoke format/structure of whichever site you're leaving.
#
kepler
i mean, i already have... eleven websites
#
kepler
i was just asking a question of opinion/perspective
#
WinnerWind
[capjamesg]: personally nothing is as good as being able to move from X platofrm to any platform. moving from squarespace to ghost is far less flexible than moving text files around
#
[capjamesg]
I think quite a few of us can relate to running more than one site 😂
#
WinnerWind
and unfortunately, i guess, nothing is truly 100% movable
#
[capjamesg]
Ghost has done a lot of work on import formats which is nice to see: https://docs.ghost.org/migration/
#
[capjamesg]
They support Substack, Medium, Squarespace, Buttondown, WordPress, and more.
#
WinnerWind
[capjamesg]: thats a LOT of migraiton options ^_^
#
WinnerWind
does look like a lot of setup for the initial import if its not from a preset provider though
#
WinnerWind
but i assume ghost's target audience isnt people moving from {{ esoteric blog site }} to it but rather people moving from a super popular option like squarespace to it
#
[capjamesg]
Yeah. I am seeing Ghost pop up more and more and it’s nice to see since they also have their open source offering.
#
[capjamesg]
Which is to say you could start off on hosted and export your data into a self-hosted instance I think (or vice versa).
#
WinnerWind
oh that's super neat :)
#
WinnerWind
lets people dip their toes before committing
#
WinnerWind
that was especially important for me when i was on github pages, haha
#
[capjamesg]
I _think_ you can do that via their Universal Import.
#
[capjamesg]
They have a guide from self-hosted to Pro (their hosted tool) but I assume the same instructions work in reverse (https://docs.ghost.org/migration/ghost).
#
WinnerWind
[capjamesg]: neato!
#
WinnerWind
always cool to see people allow migration from paid to free
#
WinnerWind
ive used a whole host of tools to host/make my site: Github Pages, Nekoweb/Neocities, Quartz, Obsidian Export tools, its cool that there are so many options but sometimes iw odner if this can lead to decision paralysis for new people
#
[capjamesg]
Yeah. If I were recommending how to set up a website to someone, I’d ask what they want and recommend 1-2 sites instead of saying “here’s 20 options for you!”
#
WinnerWind
indeed ^_^
#
WinnerWind
i remember i had decision paralsys and my page was blank for months
#
WinnerWind
don't regret making a website though ;3
#
wturrell
I tended the find the more effort I put into recommending things for people, the more difficult it got and the more they just ignored all my advice anyway
#
WinnerWind
wturrell: my dad isnt a salesman but he always told me that before recommending things, its always good to understand their needs
#
WinnerWind
its better to give one great suggestion than twenty mediocre ones

best method recommendation is to use it yourself (eat your own cooking) to make the recommendation
#
[pcarrier]
I go for "make it yourself" then don't recommend it. now I have 99 problems and hosting is one.
#
[tantek]
more like 99 projects and a recommendation engine ain't one
#
[pcarrier]
one lesson I've learnt is not to worry about abuse. I know right, it's the Internet. yet, out of all the stuff I've released, zero abuse. I guess not getting recommended enough 😄
#
[pcarrier]
knocks on wood
#
[tantek]
pcarrier, while I think that used to be true pre-2022, as of 2026, I think the assumption should be that LLMs crawlbots will find (and eventually abuse) everything linked on the web.
#
[social]
The frontier models claimed in early 2025 everything on the web had been scraped and all information in digital form had been ingested as well. The crawlers are just trying to pick-up what is new.
#
[tantek]
[social] if that's the cause perhaps I need to change my personal site search form to submit a query to an LLM asking "List me the top http://tantek.com blog posts containing the words ... " 🙃
#
[tantek]
if that's the case*
#
Loqi
[preview] Tantek Çelik
#
[pcarrier]
they ingested it, doesn't mean they can regurgitate it
#
[pcarrier]
the web is zettabytes, the models terabytes at most
#
[pcarrier]
I've ingested a lot of content in my life, I can't even list 100 countries
#
[social]
LLMs don’t retain context.
#
[pcarrier]
one last point before I leave the topic where it belongs, aka not in this community: I think it's fair to describe LLM training as a _very_ lossy compression technique
#
Loqi
[tantek], [pcarrier]: it looks like this conversation is getting pretty technical (LLM), can you take it to #indieweb-dev?

#
[tantek]
So does the wiki
#
[tantek]
What are slash pages
#
Loqi
page is short for a web page on the IndieWeb, and is usually primarily known by its name (AKA named page), served at the top level of a site (AKA slash page), and kept updated in place in contrast to posts which are primarily datetime-based; a page that is browser-editable with viewable revisions is a wiki-page https://indieweb.org/slash_pages
#

thanks :) well those will be plenty of fun to put together (although some seem a little to be asking to be robbed/mugged)
