I'm not really sure where I should ask this but i'll ask here anyways, I keep seeing the indieweb stuff content creators explain about and somehow they always go into making websites,
#
tameshitake
But I am curious about finding friends through the indie web instead of making website, it seems like people have not talked about this or is Indie Web isn't about finding friends? especially a truer friend that just doesn't say "damn" and "lol" and give generic advices every time you vent about something?

You’re thinking along the same lines as me!
#
[capjamesg]
I recently wrote https://jamesg.blog/2026/08/27/reading-as-participation-in-the-indie-web where I was thinking about reading as a form of participation in the community.
#
[capjamesg]
A lot of us make websites because that’s what brings us together. Many people (myself included) have found friends in the community, but generally those friendships have come from reading each other’s writing / talking / sharing ideas, etc.

#
tameshitake
Oh I was reading your blog!
#
tameshitake
If making websites and reading each other's blogs is the big thing brings "us" together... then I must be doing something wrong if I haven't found a way to make friends through the indie web? or is THIS the way?
#
tameshitake
I... don't really understand how reading blogs could bring a community, am I supposed to... contact the website creator or find a guestbook somewhere after reading the blogs?

Or is it... a more abstract concept of community that somehow makes some sort of union within the community?

#

reaching out to someone if you enjoyed reading their blog/browsing their site is a lovely thing to do and I'm sure they would appreciate it
#
thamara_k
which of course could be the basis of friendship
#
tameshitake
now that i think about it, it should be that obvious and easy but I guess i've rolled a critical failure in my thinking
#
tameshitake
but... is it always THAT obvious? It can't be right?

tameshitake
what
#
[capjamesg]
tameshitake I think you get out of it what you put in. I have made friends by reaching out to site authors and chatting with them, and by contributing to community spaces like this one. There are many other community spaces out there too: the 32-Bit Cafe, Bear Blog, Neocities.
#
[capjamesg]
I don’t think reading in isolation is enough to build community, but chatting with people after you have read something certainly is!
#
[capjamesg]
Admittedly though finding friends generally can be hard, even in friendly spaces 😭
#
tdrayson
It’s no way to force friendship making. As [capjamesg] said, making friends can be hard.

From what you said earlier about wanting someone to care when you have a conversation or you vent.

I personally class that as a closer friendship, which can sometimes take time to build those relationships.

Talking to someone with a similar interests, then it will be more natural, but you can’t really force these things
#
tameshitake
so i have to be open minded to new interest which is already quite hard for me
#
tameshitake
oh man, i just hope I wont hurt myself too much
#
tdrayson
No, it doesn’t have to be new interests can be your existing ones. What do you like doing for fun?

#

[Murray] joined the channel
#
[Murray]
I'd say that community building via websites is a little trickier these days, but it also feels harder because we're used to the immediacy of social networks and chat clients like this.
#
tameshitake
yup, and not exactly everyone wants to move on to the indie web
#
tameshitake
some likes the slop, that's alright
#
[Murray]
Back in the early web days/start of the "blogosphere" stuff, it felt a little easier, because it was more normalised, but a lot of those strategies do still work: use comment sections, post replies to people, boost their work, create communal links like blog rolls, link pages etc.
#
tdrayson
Maybe see if anyone’s written about ttrpg on the indieweb
#
[Murray]
Also, as others have said, plenty of people do still advertise emails, and if you enjoy what someone has written, sending an email can be a very nice thing
#
[Murray]
And then there are offline events, like IndieWebCamps, or online community events like Homebrew Website Club, specific to this community
#
[Murray]
I don't know of any specific TTRPG blogs or sites, but I have to believe there are plenty out there, its the kind of hobby that feels well suited to blogging and info sharing 🙂
#
[Murray]
Of course, TTRPGs also typically have offline gatherings at games stores and other community spaces, so you might find local groups that way
#
tameshitake
someone surely might've written about TTRPGs on the indie web, i mean it's THAT popular, If I can't find one then I'll write one.
#
tameshitake
oh right, emails too, I just use them for verifications these days but I suppose I give them more purpose, If I have the whole email, I'll use the whole email, just like the speedometer on my auntie's mobility vehicle

#

<tameshitake>
#
tameshitake
i mean there are forums like knockout.chat which might not be indie web but... eh
#
[Murray]
Yeah, I was going to say, this is what web rings are _made for_, but I just don't feel like they ever work as well as they should. I keep wanting to explore some web components that could "modernise" webrings a bit more, provide stuff like suggested articles from within a webrings data set, or ways to make the hub site more about community and discovery
#
[Murray]
Just don't have the time 😅

tameshitake
are uhhh
#
tameshitake
web buttons are some sort of web rings?
#
[Murray]
Like, they're often buried in footers, and can be a fun way to explore the web, but rarely feel that integrated. And then the community side of them can exist, but it feels more like the community comes first where it works, and for those without that foundation, it never evolves
#
[Murray]
Buttons are similar, I guess I'd see them as a form of blogroll too
#
IWDiscord
<tameshitake>
#
tameshitake
it feels like it's either awful navigation or corporate slopistan algorithm
#
tameshitake
no, there has to be something in between
#
[Murray]
Yeah, that's where I feel like webring hub pages can be a useful middle ground. There are a few that do it quite well, but none that then take those additional tools and let you incorporate them onto your own site. That level of integration is still reserved for more centralised communities, like Blogger/Wordpress.com/Neocities, yet it feels doable on any site
#
[Murray]
But on the flipside, if you're asking about how to get to know folks online, one of the best ways I've found is starting the thing that you want to find, if it doesn't already exist. I made some really solid friends as a teen/young adult via forums that I either created or co-moderated
#
tameshitake
i've found some webring hub pages, i've lost them though, and some of the links doesn't work
#
tameshitake
Webring hub pages, that's a first idea

this is a great write-up. there's too much hype around APCA (Accessible Perceptual Contrast Algorithm) right now. please note that is not part of the WCAG and will not be in v3.0 as it currently stands. don't use APCA as your justification in production work. https://www.jessicaoddi.com/saved/contrast-enhanced
