#jeremycherfasIt was really foolish. I had moved to a VPS on DreamHost, and was seeing the benefit on my little sites that I hosted there. And I also had a big site that I co-manage (>7000 posts) on DreamPress. So I thought it would be a good idea to move that to my VPS.
#jeremycherfasIt was a disaster. I really do not know enough to optimise WP on my VPS.
#jeremycherfasSo I started to move it back to DreamPress.
#jeremycherfasAnd while that has gone pretty well, it has also had some very weird problems that I have bnever seen before, like being unable to retrieve that stylesheets and other resources. It must be something to do with Varnish caching but I cannot figure out what.
#jeremycherfasAlso, for a while I could not see any images on the site. They were giving 404s too. Now I can see them, but not the thumbnails in the media directory.
#jeremycherfasSo, lots of little things that need to be fixed and that I cannot seem to find answers to myself, so I have to keep waiting for DreamHost support.
#jeremycherfasI suspect there may be some odd redirects in htaccess, but as I didn't write them, I want DreamHost to sort them out.
#ZegnatI probably also have done subpar nginx configurations. Wouldn't have made the move to VPS at all of it wasn't for the IndieWebCamp support I had to fall back on
#ZegnatYes, especially with the move being within their ecosystem they should be able to help
#GWGI'm overdue to check my SSL test score. Sometimes I think tantek is right about a self-hosting tax
#GWGConversely, that's how I learn about things. By building/rebuilding them
#ZegnatI'm glad to have done this now, with someone at my side to discuss it with. I feel like I can now start move other stuff over by myself.
#GWGZegnat: If you ever want to discuss, I always find discussions inspire me to finally prioritize things I've not yet
#ZegnatI am currently just running the default nginx/certbot SSL set-up. I might strengthen it, but if you are fine with defaults I don't think it added much of a tax on me.
#sknebelthanks to the great testing tools available and mozilla and others sharing recommendations, SSL has become a lot easier to handle than it was
#ZegnatYou just remembered me I need to check out my logging GWG. This conversation is already helpful! Haha
#sknebeland the defaults (current) Debian shipped with on Zegnat's site were quite good
#jeremycherfasGWG the self-hosting tax is very real, and I'm surprised people don't make more of it.
#jeremycherfasHosts mostly compete on bottom line price per GB or bandwidth. But the ones that sell ease of use, rather than, say, responsiveness, make it difficult to sell a better service.
#LoqiGUID is an acronym for Globally Unique Identifier, typically a 128-bit number that used to uniquely reference or identify something https://indieweb.org/GUID

#tantek.comedited /GUID (+777) "put debunking of GUIDs in the dfn, provide specific quotes from Waxy article / experience in migration" (view diff)
#LoqiA GUID or Globally Unique Identifier is a (typically) 128-bit number to uniquely reference or identify something; on the IndieWeb, GUIDs are encouraged in some feed file formats as supposedly more persistent than permalinks but in practice GUIDs have been less portable and harder to preserve/migrate/restore than permalinks https://indieweb.org/GUID
