@indiewebcamp Hi, there, your http://indieauth.com not check sites which are only on #IPv6 :-(

Zegnat: ^^^ that tweet kind of reminds me of our "project" last night
#
Zegnat
Glad i didn't go IPv6 only then, right ;)

jeremycherfas did I just read you also moved servers?
#
Zegnat
Any particular reasons?
#
Zegnat
I just finished moving hosting last night, so it stood out :) https://licit.li/5a00f446234ba

It was really foolish. I had moved to a VPS on DreamHost, and was seeing the benefit on my little sites that I hosted there. And I also had a big site that I co-manage (>7000 posts) on DreamPress. So I thought it would be a good idea to move that to my VPS.
#
jeremycherfas
It was a disaster. I really do not know enough to optimise WP on my VPS.
#
jeremycherfas
So I started to move it back to DreamPress.
#
jeremycherfas
And while that has gone pretty well, it has also had some very weird problems that I have bnever seen before, like being unable to retrieve that stylesheets and other resources. It must be something to do with Varnish caching but I cannot figure out what.
#
jeremycherfas
Also, for a while I could not see any images on the site. They were giving 404s too. Now I can see them, but not the thumbnails in the media directory.
#
jeremycherfas
So, lots of little things that need to be fixed and that I cannot seem to find answers to myself, so I have to keep waiting for DreamHost support.
#
Zegnat
Aah, that sucks.
#
jeremycherfas
I suspect there may be some odd redirects in htaccess, but as I didn't write them, I want DreamHost to sort them out.
#
Zegnat
I probably also have done subpar nginx configurations. Wouldn't have made the move to VPS at all of it wasn't for the IndieWebCamp support I had to fall back on
#
Zegnat
Yes, especially with the move being within their ecosystem they should be able to help
#
GWG
I have to put in a time investment on my VPS
#
GWG
The log system needs an update
#
GWG
I'm overdue to check my SSL test score. Sometimes I think tantek is right about a self-hosting tax
#
GWG
Conversely, that's how I learn about things. By building/rebuilding them
#
Zegnat
I'm glad to have done this now, with someone at my side to discuss it with. I feel like I can now start move other stuff over by myself.
#
GWG
Zegnat: If you ever want to discuss, I always find discussions inspire me to finally prioritize things I've not yet
#
Zegnat
I am currently just running the default nginx/certbot SSL set-up. I might strengthen it, but if you are fine with defaults I don't think it added much of a tax on me.
#
sknebel
thanks to the great testing tools available and mozilla and others sharing recommendations, SSL has become a lot easier to handle than it was
#
Zegnat
You just remembered me I need to check out my logging GWG. This conversation is already helpful! Haha
#
sknebel
and the defaults (current) Debian shipped with on Zegnat's site were quite good
#
Loqi
Zegnat: lol
#
sknebel
and david.shanske.com gets A+ ssllabs score, so I guess you already looked at that a while back :)
#
Zegnat
Yes, it seemed even certbot (at least on my Debian) by default handles renewal now. So it was even easier than I expected!
#
GWG
sknebel: I did.
#
jeremycherfas
GWG the self-hosting tax is very real, and I'm surprised people don't make more of it.
#
jeremycherfas
Hosts mostly compete on bottom line price per GB or bandwidth. But the ones that sell ease of use, rather than, say, responsiveness, make it difficult to sell a better service.
#
jeremycherfas
Let's Encrypt was a game-changer for me.
#
Zegnat
I think the only real annoyance we bumped into was that most stable operating systems do not offer PHP 7.1 packages out of the box.
#
Zegnat
But I could very well be missing some tax that applies to less tech inclined people than me

!tell aaronpk just out of curiosity why is your post-list a ul and all the h-entries li-s?
#
Loqi
Ok, I'll tell them that when I see them next
#
aaronpk
not really sure heh
#
aaronpk
i guess cause it's a list of posts?
#
petermolnar
that is unquestionably true
#
Zegnat
For a paginated feed, I guess screen readers will this way announce the amount of articles on the page
#
Zegnat
Though whether anyone using a screen reader would expect this...
#
dgold
hmmm, qualsys only gives me an A rating
#
petermolnar
what is qualsys?
#
Loqi
It looks like we don't have a page for "qualsys" yet. Would you like to create it?
#
dgold
Qualys
#
dgold
my apologies
#
jeremycherfas
I see Petermolnar just used it.
#
petermolnar
I used that a while ago
#
petermolnar
sometimes it worth revisiting
#
jeremycherfas
Well, you were top of the list I just saw.
#
petermolnar
A+, I'm fine with that
#
jeremycherfas
I only got an A for the site I've been wrestling with for the past few days. Apparently my key exzchange and cipher strength are weak.
#
dgold
dave winer's been back beating the anti-https drum recently
#
jeremycherfas
And I'm fine with that.
#
petermolnar
dave winer has been beating lots of drums
#
petermolnar
I would not listen to his drums
#
Zegnat
I get a B with default nginx and certbot.
#
petermolnar
jeremycherfas nginx or apache?
#
petermolnar
I can't help with that :(

what is a GUID
#
Loqi
GUID is an acronym for Globally Unique Identifier, typically a 128-bit number that used to uniquely reference or identify something https://indieweb.org/GUID

what is a GUID
#
Loqi
A GUID or Globally Unique Identifier is a (typically) 128-bit number to uniquely reference or identify something; on the IndieWeb, GUIDs are encouraged in some feed file formats as supposedly more persistent than permalinks but in practice GUIDs have been less portable and harder to preserve/migrate/restore than permalinks https://indieweb.org/GUID

speaking of APIs since Twitter is rolling out 280 to everyone, has that been mentioned for the API?
#
tantek
[miklb] yeah I have 280 in the web UI but was unable to get my code to be able to post >140 chars via the API
#
[miklb]
figured it was too soon since they are just rolling it out to everyone right now
#
snarfed
eh that's no excuse for delaying the API. guess it's just still a second class citizen, as usual for them :/
#
tantek
I had hoped optimistically that the API would "just work" for me with a larger post, but no, got the error of it being too big :(
#
Zegnat
There might be an API way... As there was the guy who posted a several k tweet
#
[miklb]
I thought that was some unicode voodoo

yeah that's nothing to do with 280

Twitter is upping the character limit to 280 & making it available to third-party apps like ours. Hang in there, we’re on it! ? #iOS #macOS

i know twitter's jealous of mastodon for having 500 characters and not having nazis, but did they have to half-ass both by only giving 280 characters and not banning their nazis?
