@BrianRoemmele
Consider: millions of years ago our antecedents gave a massive sacrifice of their left hemisphere. We lost a tremendous amount of short term memory and replaced it with Broca’s, Wernicke & the phonological loop. But why? So we can—talk. Thus chimpanzees can do this—we can’t: https://twitter.com/BrianRoemmele/status/1213860120058220546/video/1

swentel, don't know if this is better for the Known channel or here, but having trouble logging into indigenous, I deleted all my tokens but when I log in it opens Known in the browser
#
[jgmac1106]
It is a Known issue: HTTP/1.1 403 Forbidden\r\nServer: nginx/1.14.0\r\nContent-Type: application/json\r\nTransfer-Encoding: chunked\r\nConnection: keep-alive\r\nX-Powered-By: PHP/7.2.7-1+ubuntu16.04.1+deb.sury.org+1\r\nCache-Control: no-cache, private\r\nDate: Mon, 06 Jan 2020 14:59:24 GMT", what I get in Monocle
#
swentel
well, opening the browser is normal, indigenous wants to ask for access and receive a token
#
[jgmac1106]
yes but then it didn't go back to indigenous. I was logged into Known in the embedded browser window
#
[jgmac1106]
I deleted all my tokens, uninstalled and then reinstalled the program, has to be a Known issue, will check to see if any other people are having it
#
[jgmac1106]
I have a token for Monocle, but not for Indigenous

GWG, also, not sure if wordpress supports it, but attachments to a post can now use the media endpoint

and 'photo' then receives the url

what is friends-only
#
Loqi
private posts refer to posts or portions of posts which are private to either the author or to a limited audience chosen or previously approved by the author https://indieweb.org/friends_only

Definitely going on my roadmap for my CMS 😄
#
aaronpk
speaking of private posts... we seem to continue to struggle with it because authentication is hard. i wonder if there's a way to avoid the problem, by using WebSub and a push model instead of trying to get authenticated feed fetching working.
#
swentel
I guess that makes sense indeed
#
[tantek]
^^^ that sounds like a great approach
#
[tantek]
definitely add that to /friends_only#Brainstorming !
#
[tantek]
that's similar to the ActivityPub "inbox" model for delivery, except maybe by limiting it to only private posts we won't have their scaling problems
#
[tantek]
private / friends-only posts
#
aaronpk
yeah that's what made me think of it. because in the activitypub model, there is nothing special about private post delivery compared to public posts, so they get it almost just built in.
#
[tantek]
I do think we need better terms / differentiation of terms there. Private should literally mean private to *you* (and anyone you might want acting as you, per delegated access etc).
#
aaronpk
oh yeah we had that discussion recently
#
[tantek]
except even AP has their own problems with private posts
#
[tantek]
so I've been using friends-only or friends-mode
#
[tantek]
I like jacky's idea of a "weekend mode" also
#
aaronpk
sure there are still problems, but they've been able to make far more progress with UI because the delivery aspect is already there
#
[tantek]
agreed. it's been "good enough" at the plumbing level to keep iterating on the UI
#
@jackyalcine
I need a weekend/alt Twitter and a ‘normal’ Twitter. If only I could subject content to specific timelines/feeds. Simply done on my IndieWeb site!

#
[tantek]
feels related to "friends-only"
#
aaronpk
we haven't even been able to get a functional poll-style version of protected/friends-only posts so we don't know what problems it might even have once it's running

#
[tantek]

#
[tantek]
what is a poll
#

It looks like we don't have a page for "poll" yet. Would you like to create it? (Or just say "poll is ____", a sentence describing the term)

It looks like we don't have a page for "polling" yet. Would you like to create it? (Or just say "polling is ____", a sentence describing the term)
#
aaronpk
really?
#
[tantek]
pretty sure there is a page about polls somewhere
#
[tantek]
what is polling
#
Loqi
polling is also known as periodically fetching, and part of the problem with the “just use RSS!” attitude by some old-school bloggers who are ignoring about 15 years of social media UX and protocols work, specifically the “thundering herd” problem as well as the overpolling problem of popular sites; use WebSub instead per https://tantek.com/2018/024/t4/websub-recommendation https://indieweb.org/polling
#
[tantek]
I'll leave it to aaronpk or kevinmarks to improve that >:)
#
aaronpk
oh gosh
#
jamietanna[m]
Has anyone got an example of what a quote tweet looks like with bridgy? I've looked at https://brid.gy/about#quote-tweet but can't 100% get what the markup should look like from the excerpt
#
[tantek]
do you mean input or output?
#
[tantek]
what is a quote
#
Loqi
A quotation is a type of response post that is primarily a subset of the contents of another post, and often has a citation of that other post https://indieweb.org/quote
#
[tantek]
^^^ jamietanna[m] check that for how to markup
#
[tantek]
pretty sure Bridgy implemented what was documented
MoneyFREE joined the channel
#
jamietanna[m]
Sorry yeah so I see that, but I'm guessing that means that _as well as_ the `u-repost-of`, there's the `h-cite`?
#
[tantek]
Sorry I don't understand the question. Use the most minimal markup allowed to start with.
#
aaronpk
that page could use a complete example of the markup and parsed result
AxieDiscord[m] left the channel
#
aaronpk
but yes the intent is the "repost-of" property is an "h-cite" object in the parsed result
#
[tantek]
I don't think h-cite is required, nor should it be
#
aaronpk
the question was what bridgy does
#
aaronpk
that would be the complete example
MoneyFREE joined the channel
#
[tantek]
I don't think that's the right approach
#
[tantek]
I would start with the minimum viable markup for this, publish it, try it with bridgy, and if it doesn't work as expected, file an issue
MoneyFREE joined the channel
#
aaronpk
oh i thought this was about what bridgy is publishing
#
[tantek]
since clear the page is still "in development" as you observed from what it "could use", it's better to treat it that way and help refine it through practical work rather than not
#
aaronpk
like what a quote tweet from twitter looks like in bridgy
#
aaronpk
not how to publish a quote tweet with bridgy publish
#
[tantek]
wait yeah haha is this for Bridgy Publish or Bridgy Backfeed jamietanna[m]?
#
aaronpk
i agree for publishing, you wouldn't include the full h-cite object

jamietanna[m], fwiw, it took me a couple of iterations for getting that markup right too (within Drupal, tricky stuff there)
#
swentel
use the preview option in bridgy to test first :)
#
swentel
so you don't spam too many users hehe
#
jamietanna[m]
swentel do you have an example I may be able to compare against?
#
swentel
hmm wait

something is not right
#

thanks, what do you think isn't right?
#
jamietanna[m]
also swentel++ for another awesome Indigenous release 🙌
#
swentel
yeah, I like this one too :)
#
swentel
I actually like the media endpoint approach now, so it's a good thing people kept asking for it ;)
#
swentel
jamietanna[m], updated the post, e-content now has actual content
#
swentel
which brid.gy will use as the content for the tweet
#
jamietanna[m]
Thanks, I'll see if I can get it working!
#
gRegorLove
QT through bridgy can be as simple as including the full tweet URL. E.g. https://gregorlove.com/2019/12/i-was-going-into-tosche/
#
Loqi
[gRegor Morrill] “I was going into Tosche Station to pick up some power converters!” https://twitter.com/AdamLanceGarcia/status/1202026496912703488
#

that makes sense
#
aaronpk
depends on if you want to show the QT contents on your site i guess
#
gRegorLove
Yeah, I've left that as a future enhancement for now :)
#
swentel
oh, that's easier indeed
#
aaronpk
that's what tantek was getting at above

I have a theory that #indieweb #webmentions like we see on Wordpress, help excite Googlebot. Webmentions, between blogs encourage longer, more frequesnt replies/comments to a post. Googlebot responds to that added activity and text. Sample is limited tho.

This is my point, there should not need to be a "repost-of" property for a *quote* post
#
[tantek]
a quote is not a repost
#
[tantek]
that would be extraneous markup that would be confusing at best, and breaking things at worst
#
jamietanna[m]
Ah that makes sense. I've followed gRegorLove and just added a link - will see what happens next time I do a quote tweet!
