GWG++ ooh definitely curious what your thoughts are on reviews
#
Loqi
GWG has 24 karma in this channel over the last year (152 in all channels)
#
GWG
[tantek]: That I need to design a fornat for them
#
GWG
Considering what I might be reviewing
#
[tantek]
a visual display format?
#
GWG
[tantek]: And content
#
GWG
For example, trip review, a restaurant review, a product review
#
GWG
They are different
#
GWG
I did some trip notes/reports recently I thought I could iterate on in the same vein
#
[tantek]
makes sense!
#
GWG
[tantek]: Do you have any thoughts on trip reports?
#
GWG
Or restaurant reviews?
#
GWG
I feel like when we talk review, it's usually product
#
GWG
I should ask about this. This is the only example I see on /review
#
GWG
Since he seems to be using my code
#
[tantek]
odd, aaronpk has reviews
#
GWG
Yes, but he reviews products mostly
#
GWG
I have seen him review a single food item at a place, like an alcoholic drink
#
GWG
But not an experience or a venue
#
[tantek]
I should dig up my old restaurant reviews

I agree

GWG
As I said, it seems to be less represented, which means an exploration is in order
#
[tantek]
here are a couple of old ones GWG: http://tantek.com/log/2006/07.html#d19t1832
#
Loqi
New York City reviews: more fitness and food
#
GWG
Who here reviews things on other sites?
#
[tantek]
Occasionally I post tips on Swarm/Foursquare if that's what you mean
#
GWG
Looking at h-review still
#
GWG
It assumes that the review has an overall rating, but nothing about sub-ratings.
#
GWG
For example, evaluating on multiple criteria.

That's the python parser working on an mf1 hreview example
#
[KevinMarks]
Which isn't structuring the subcategories
#
[KevinMarks]
So you could replicate that with <span class="p-rating" >Food: 18/30</span> etc
#
[KevinMarks]
That doesn't look fully satisfactory tbh
#
[KevinMarks]
<dl class="h-rating" ><dt class="category" >Food</dt>:<dd><span class="value" >18</span>/<span class="best" >30</span><dt class="category" >Ambience</dt>:<dd><span class="value" >19</span>/<span class="best" >30</span></dl> maybe
#
[KevinMarks]
Er <dl class="h-rating" ><dt class="p-category" >Food</dt>:<dd><span class="p-value" >18</span>/<span class="p-best" >30</span><dt class="p-category" >Ambience</dt>:<dd><span class="p-value" >19</span>/<span class="p-best" >30</span></dl>
#
[KevinMarks]
No, hat doesn't bind right either
#
[KevinMarks]
3rd go <div class="h-rating" ><span class="p-category" >Food</span>:<dd><span class="p-value" >18</span>/<span class="p-best" >30</span></div> <div class="h-rating" ><span class="p-category" >Ambience</span>:<dd><span class="p-value" >19</span>/<span class="p-best" >30</span></div>

GWG
[KevinMarks]: What would you propose?
#
[KevinMarks]
Well, it's a question of who you expect to parse it really.
#
[KevinMarks]
The other way might be to nest the subratings as sub reviews. If they're adjectives like Tantek's original example that is a bit odd, but if they're reviews of particular dishes it could make more sense to say Kevin gave the sashimi 8/10
#
GWG
[KevinMarks]: My next step is to design a review and document my use cases regardless of markup and see what I have before returning to whether I need new markup
#
GWG
I sort of like the subreview idea
#
GWG
A review nested in a review
#
[KevinMarks]
we should maybe raccoon this to #microformats - iirc subratings were based on Zagat style ratings, which were optimised for brevity in print. Tht may still be useful, but I can see subreviews making sense too
#
GWG
I'm not familiar with the term raccoon this
#
GWG
I want to look at Google reviews, TripAdvisor, Yelp, etc
#
GWG
To see the variants
#
[KevinMarks]
if you do gather variants, can you update http://microformats.org/wiki/review-examples and link to them from http://microformats.org/wiki/h-review

Question for people who host websites in your homes, or any non-managed DC: Do you use a UPS? Do you have a special QoS on your internet service?
#
[Raphael_Luckom]
in general, are there special considerations for robustness in excess of what you'd use for a pc to browse the internet?
#
aaronpk
I have my server on a UPS, nothing fancy tho
#
[Raphael_Luckom]
is it like a server-rack server, old pc, rpi?

#

I run an old desktop UPS, works fine for the occasional instantaneous blip or short outages
#

I don't manage QoS stuff
#
vilhalmer
my server is rack form factor but not actually in a rack, I just liked the flexibility of the case
#
GWG
For Weather Station Beta and Charlie, I use an ECS Liva which is similar to a Pi
#
[Raphael_Luckom]
Another question, feel free to ignore if I'm getting annoying: what kind of setup would you recommend to someone who hadn't had a website but wanted to self host? Would you suggest using a hosting service until they got used to it, or are there specific configurations you'd recommend when they're ready?
#
Zegnat
[KevinMarks]: that is what you get when every optimisation becomes a new opt-in thing and never becomes the default for <img>

It does seem like a pretty nice and complete article. Apart from the lazy rendering through CSS (content-visibility & contain-intrinsic-size), I think I knew of all those methods. I still often will not bother though, because plain <img> is right there :P
