SC has said that APIs may very well be copyrightable, but in this specific case, Google met the Fair Use factors and therefor could not be found to be infringing. (Thus no need to determine whether APIs are copyrightable or not, and all future similar cases will have to walk the same legal line to be tested for fair use.)
