thepaperpilot [tantek]: I think it'd be reasonable to have "rehosters" occasionally re-query the original source to look for updates. Naturally the edited version would have a new signature. You could even include an element within the signed content saying it previously had <old sig> as the signature. That whole thing being signed with the same private key would verify it was an edit by the original author
