This seems relevant to some indieweb interests like posts with locations:

[snarfed] I started setting up bridgy fed today. One thing I wished I could do was set a featured image without having to load the URL on my home page.
#
capjamesg
Right now I am using an image that's display none.
#
capjamesg
It would be cool if I could do this with a link header instead so the user doesn't have to load an image that they will not see.
#
capjamesg
I don't have a banner image on my site but I wanted one on the fediverse representation.
#
[snarfed]
capjamesg oh interesting, hmm
#
[snarfed]
I wonder if what other markup besides img you could use that would parse into the photo property
#
[snarfed]
a class=u-photo href?
#
capjamesg
That would be good.
#
[snarfed]
er, sorry, u-featured
gRegor joined the channel
#
[tantek]
right, u-featured
#
[tantek]
capjamesg, AFAIK there is no standard "fediverse representation" for "banner image", unless you know what that property is for what object in AS2?
#
[tantek]
or do you mean a Mastodon proprietary banner/hero image?
#
capjamesg
Mastodon is where I am looking but I assumed that other Fediverse tools also had support for some kind of banner image.
#
[snarfed]
afaict capjamesg is just talking about what Bridgy Fed uses when converting from web mf2, which is u-featured
#
[snarfed]
tantek is right that there's no official standard AS2 property for header/banner image. Mastodon (and most other fediverse software afaik) uses `icon` for profile picture, `image` for header/banner. https://docs.joinmastodon.org/spec/activitypub/#properties-used-1
#
capjamesg
Good to know!
#
[tantek]
wow that's kind of an abuse of those properties
#
[tantek]
wondering if we should consider either a separate "banner" (like 'u-banner' property) for h-card for this, or is u-featured "good enough"? I would expect u-featured to still be a picture of the *person* though, not a "background image for their profile"
#
[tantek]
yet another example (similar to squatting on "summary" for content-warnings) that the supposed "easy" extensibility of AS2 is not easy, and instead resulted in "hey this property over here looks close enough, let's special purpose it for something vaguely related to its semantic"
ttybitnik joined the channel
#
[snarfed]
maybe. various other fediverse software projects have introduced lots of real AS2 extension properties too, and many of them have been standards-tracked after the fact, eg https://swicg.github.io/miscellany/ and related CG reports
#
[snarfed]
Mastodon has been somewhat unusual in abusing existing properties
#
[tantek]
huh, could just be the "biggest player taking shortcuts" effect
#
[tantek]
[snarfed] would be nice if someone actually had a flat list of such extensions somewhere. Pretty sure there's a W3C wiki page for this
#
[tantek]
instead of having to "hunt" for them. maybe even a (gasp) registry ๐Ÿ™‚
#
[snarfed]
maybe. but they made those choices a long time ago

[Jo] Do you use a Europe-based domain registrar?
#
capjamesg
I am looking for recommendations.
#
[Jo]
Yes IONOS is Germany based and they're fine, I don't have experience with any other domain registrars though. I know some people who use smaller Germany/EU based registrars but I'm blanking on their names right now
#
[Jo]
netcup is one
#
capjamesg
Hm Netcup looks good!
#
[Jo]
yes I've been thinking of switching for a while now

capjamesg for the link to an image, maybe `<data class="u-featured" data="/path/to/image.jpeg"></data>`?
#
capjamesg
That could work?
#
btrem
WFM for similar uses. Well, "works" as in a parser sees the value.
#
btrem
I use it for the photo h-entry with a location h-card where the p-name of the h-card is already in the h1 element of the h-entry page.
#

Looking for an example to show you....

I think data is better than I have right now.

On a different topic: is there a vcalendar to yaml/json/something readable converter? I'm trying to debug an ics feed. (And once again, getting frustrated with Drupal.)
#
gRegor
No experience, but here's one to go to CSV https://github.com/loteoo/icsp

and hugops for Drupal
#
btrem
"hugops"? I don't get it.
#
btrem
I was hoping for a site wher I could paste in vcal text and immediately see json. IOW, I was trying to be lazy! Ah well, looks like I'll have to save the feed and then convert it.
#
btrem
gRegor++ thanks

HugOps means empathy/support for building/working with software, a play off of DevOps
#
btrem
Ah. Right. Yeah, I'm still trying to get an ical feed working. And getting strange results with curl, like 406 not acceptable, even though AFAICT curl sends an accept header of */*. So why is Drupal sending 406?
#
btrem
If I make the feed public (only on my localhost dev server), I get valid VCALENDAR data. But it's too hard to parse, hence my need for a converter. And if I get *that* to work, then I have to figure out basic http auth. Ugh.

(apologies for the pedantic nitpick) I think hugops is usually aimed specifically at ops stuff, eg firefighting downtime

great term and sentiment regardless!

I just came across the most useless website that claims to convert ical to other formats. I saved my ical as a text file, uploaded it to the site, clicked the "convert to..." button. It popped up only two options: txt and html. I chose txt. It then "converted" the file to a text file with the vcalendar markup. IOW, it did jack all. WTF?!
#
btrem
It's almost comically useless.
#
btrem
I wonder what the source code is for this genius tool. :/
#
aaronpk
@bugsmith thanks, yes it's still "active", it just hasn't needed a lot of changes. I did see your PRs come through but haven't had a chance to review them yet

[snarfed]
mโ€‹athium05 yeah if you can't modify HTML _or_ HTTP headers, then you can't really do much
#
mathium05
I don't think cloudflare pages allowed changed to HTTP headers
#
mathium05
And the HTML is a part of a FOSS project, which I could change but that'd make *everyones* HTML contain it
#
mathium05
I can add DNS records to my domain
#
mathium05
(how I verified it on discord)
#
[artlung]
That doesn't sound like a personal website which is 1:1 for you then. One thing indieauth can do is if you have a github account and a fediverse account (as in Mastodon) and they both point at *each other* using rel="me" then you can sign in using your mastodon url in a way analogous to a personal website.
#
mathium05
I guess not, but the reason I want to login is to add information about related topics to my website

Hey folks, Iโ€™d attempt this myself but Iโ€™m hampered by a powercut atm - would anyone mind setting the font-size for the search box on the wiki to 16px because if the text is smaller than that on an iOS device it will do that weird slight zoom thing? https://css-tricks.com/16px-or-larger-text-prevents-ios-form-zoom/
#
hughrawlinson
It might be possible to do here: https://indieweb.org/MediaWiki:Common.css
#

So am I going to be stuck unable to expand the wiki artical until I get my blog thingy up and running? lol

A domain (or subdomain) with a minimal index.html and a rel-me to your email and/or github would work, if that's possible for you. Don't have to have a whole CMS running.
#
gRegor
what is rel-me
#
Loqi
Using rel=me on a hyperlink indicates that its destination represents the same person or entity as the current page, which is a key building-block of web-sign-in, IndieAuth, and โœ… distributed identity verification https://indieweb.org/rel%3D%22me%22
