Is anyone else working through The Odin Project or the Free Code Camp web courses to improve their sites? šŸ˜… I guess I just really like structure lol
#
osteophage
I haven't worked on it recently, but I did some of Free Code Camp last summer.
#
osteophage
It taught me how to do the moon effect I used for The Haunted Woods. https://osteophage.neocities.org/halloween/haunted_woods

Thinking about adding view transitions to my site now that Firefox is going to support them.
#
[aciccarello]
I'd really like to figure out how to animate opening a post expanding to the full page

I love view transitions

[snarfed]
(...at least, as a non-designer, non-web-developer, who doesn't really know what they're doing šŸ˜Ž)

Make sure they respect the prefers-reduced-motion stuff, although I’m sure Firefox might do that for you.

[snarfed]
huh. seems like if the browser is interpreting and running the view transition, ideally it should respect prefers-reduced-motion itself...?

[snarfed] Sorry for the delay re: granary polling. Do you operate 34.96.47.36?
#
capjamesg
I have seen 16,659 requests from this IP over the last day.
#
capjamesg
Example record: 34.96.47.36 - - [24/Aug/2025:19:03:26 +0000] "GET / HTTP/1.1" 200 10764 "-" "granary (https://granary.io/)"
#
capjamesg
I advertise Granary to convert / and /longform-feed/ (the two pages the IP is requesting) to RSS on my website.
#
capjamesg
*by advertise I mean include the granary link in a rel=alternate
#
capjamesg
Of note, ~half of the requests are 302 redirects.
#
capjamesg
(/longform-feed/ redirects to /longform-feed)
#
capjamesg
This isn't causing any problems for me but I wanted to flag it anyway since it is quite a few requests.
#
[snarfed]
sorry for the trouble capjamesg!
#
[snarfed]
if it's only for a small set of URLs, sounds like two or three, that's definitely more than expecte
#
[snarfed]
granary itself doesn't choose when to fetch, it only fetches when it gets an external request, but still, it should be caching more than that
#
[snarfed]
I'll look
#
[snarfed]
it's possible that the requests to granary are using Cache-Control: no-cache, or something similar, which would bypass our caching
#
capjamesg
No worries! Here are some more logs in case the additional timestamps are helpful: https://gist.github.com/capjamesg/818aa178862d3db02eb3bf510a3f796d

#
capjamesg
That is possible, since the services making the requests are likely feed readers who want the freshest content.
#
capjamesg
But it's interesting how clustered some of the requests are.
#
[mattl]
[snarfed] Yeah, for something like a transition the browser will do the right thing if that thing is turned on.
#
capjamesg
Like there were 9-10 requests for the same URL in the same minute from Granary.

yeah we should definitely be caching more on our end. we're using the same Cache-Control header as in other projects that are getting cached better, so I'm not sure what's up yet
