not sure if this is the best place to ask, but idk really where else to ask:
#
solonovamax
does anyone know of any implementations of rss' <cloud> tag?
#
solonovamax
I'd like to implement it for a server, but I have no clue what exactly it wants as the documentation is so vague (see: https://www.rssboard.org/rsscloud-interface, https://cyber.harvard.edu/rss/soapMeetsRss.html#rsscloudInterface)
#
[snarfed]
from 2000 😆
#
[snarfed]
solonovamax consider https://websub.net/ instead? the more modern, indieweb friendly alternative
#
solonovamax
yeah ik there's websub as well which I was going to also do, however it would be nice if I could offer support for both
#
Loqi
[preview] [Julien Genestoux] WebSub
#
[tantek]
solonovamax, we're certainly fans of bridging and supporting multiple services / protocols here
#
[tantek]
might be easier to start with WebSub first since it's got an actual spec with details (W3C Recommendation) and test suite https://websub.rocks/ — then explore generalizing to support the RSS cloud tag.
#
[tantek]
I don't know of anyone offering support for both but it certainly seems both possible and reasonable
#
solonovamax
yeah it's just I can't find any information on what the request/response looks like for it. I do know that for the <cloud> tag. I can guess at what the request will look like for the XML-RPC variant, but I have no clue for the HTTP POST variant or the SOAP variant
#
[tantek]
right, it's a bit more of a hunt
#
[snarfed]
solonovamax do you know anything that consumes/receives rss cloud pings?
#
solonovamax
nope
#
solonovamax
I tried looking at a couple of random FOSS feed readers but none of them had any (relevant) references to "cloud"
#
gRegor
I think Colin Walker has been experimenting with rsscloud in recent years. Search "rsscloud" on https://colinwalker.blog/search/
#
solonovamax
actually I did just manage to find this which sheds a *bit* of light on what the response shape looks like, but it's still not the best: https://web.archive.org/web/20091025131338/http://rsscloud.org/walkthrough.html
#
solonovamax
hmmm, interesting ty
#
solonovamax
yeah I just now found that one
#
solonovamax
and also https://github.com/rsscloud/rsscloud-server which will probably be pretty useful, though they don't seem to implement the SOAP interface
#
[tantek]
what is RSS cloud
#
Loqi
It looks like we don't have a page for "RSS cloud" yet. Would you like to create it? (Or just say "RSS cloud is ____", a sentence describing the term)
#
[tantek]
huh thought we did
#
aaronpk
i don't even really know what rss cloud is
#
[snarfed]
websub for RSS
#
solonovamax
it's basically websub but specifically for rss and shittier
#
[tantek]
I did a bit of a deep dive into it recently when I was researching the early timeline of RSS, and the cloud element kinda has (or was designed to have) most of the innovations of WebSub
#
[tantek]
yup, in 2001. here you go with citations: https://indieweb.org/timeline#2001
#
[tantek]
it was part of RSS 0.92
#
[tantek]
we used to get a lot more innovation in .01 version number increments 😆
#
[tantek]
darn version number inflation
#
solonovamax
due to the recession, version increments now increment the minor or major versions

aaronpk, it is super late but I can't sleep and your JWKS comment is stuck in my head. I found my original experiment!
#
carrvo
I remember now that mod_auth_openidc wanted a JWT, which required some kind of signature.
#
carrvo
I think I figured out an algorithm, but not how to configure the library with a predefined secret. Or something.
#
carrvo
If you, or anyone else, knows how to configure that particular library without JWT, and just the payload, I would be happy to revisit.
#
carrvo
JWKS would have been my next pursuit so that secrets could be handed around in a way the library could be configured for. Or so my ignorance led me.
#
carrvo
Now that I have figured out composer packages and Debian packages I could also consider retrying with a JWKS library...

indielogin just allowed me to login with my bsky account using http://kevinmarks.com
#
[KevinMarks]
I din't realise that https://kevinmarks.com/ times out. Bugger. how do I fix that then? It used to work, and works with www - is this because I'm using Route53 for it?
#
[KevinMarks]
chrome password manager and aws are now fighting over how I login as I have 2 other aws accounts I use and 2 different http://amazon.com accounts, and I can't find the combinationt hta works for aws with my gmail address
#
[KevinMarks]
OK, I think I fixed https://kevinmarks.com by untangling netlify and aws stuff - let me know if it works now
#
[KevinMarks]
hm, so now I fixed the https serving it's using http://indieauth.com and rel=me login when I use http://indielogin.com
#
[KevinMarks]
maybe I need to do more work to disentangle the various things I have set up there

The atproto model for multiple apps using the same login and storing structured data in the PDS looks like a working implementation of a lot of previous PDS ideas. What's not clear is having separate authorization for different apps to read each other's data. I think they're all public now
#
[KevinMarks]
Which, to be fair, all the web2 ones were initially.
#
[KevinMarks]
So it could be possible to, say, declare a webmention lexicon and have a webmention handler write mentions to the PDS for use by other apps.

"everything is public forever" was a founding principle of the whole thing and it is going to take a lot of work to tack on any sort of privacy after-the-fact

You could say that about the Web too

#
[snarfed]
yeah they're actively working on non-public data, but it will be significantly different, almost certainly not live in the current repo architecture at all
#
[snarfed]
(btw trwnh not *forever* necessarily, they provided for real deletes early on, but everything is public, definitely)
#
trwnh
idk if you can say that about the Web depending on what you think of things like Authorization header and 401 response code
#
trwnh
web architecture is built on asking an authority to do something with a name, and the authority can respond however it wants
#
trwnh
not like a merkle tree is required or anything

Im volunteering for a conference, a linux conference, and encouraging them to use a simple SSG and or edit HTML directly because its basically 3 landing pages with a few links to off site resources. Whats the tips or downlow on indieweb-ifying a organizations website?

POSSE OPP / syndication links practices just made it a lot easier to find nearly 10 year old copies of photos that broke on my own post. Highly recommended if anyone is not doing OPP/syndication links as part of their POSSE setup
#
Kolev
I worry that POSSE breaks Mastodon threads and alt text
#
[tantek]
Kolev, no we have had that solved for ages
#
[tantek]
BridgyFed supports federating both in-reply-to and image alt text. use the proper HTML+microformats markup on our blog and both replies and alt text federate to Mastodon just fine
#
Kolev
When I was using WordPress it broke threads
#
Kolev
Maybe I can get it working in Zola
