I'm using the indiweb twenty fifteen fork on a child theme in workdpress. I was trying to get the indieauth plugin but it is temporarily closed pending a full review. Is there another way for me to use indiauth on my blog? Any help or if you can point me in the right direction, I'd appreciate it 🙂

the #indieweb-wordpress channel may be more help with that!

oh my goodness just found this 256byte website example: https://256-byte-site.netlify.app/
#
[tantek]
so good
#
[tantek]
^ possibly worth some spelunking in a FrESH because from what I've seen, there's A LOT of cleverness going on there

Minesweeper / Conway's Game of Life mesmerizes me. https://codepen.io/danini-the-panini/full/KKJEdQZ
#
[tantek]
^ that's like bait to me 😂
#
[artlung]
Minesweeper is a game I deeply dislike playing but playing it tickles my brain. I fear I don't really learn from it very well. "So self-playing" editions of it are fun to look at for me.

Hey, is there a good terminology to use for having someone enter a comment directly on a website through a textbox?
#
gRegor
what is local comment
#
Loqi
local comments are comments (sometimes called native comments) that are made directly (locally) on a post (like an article) in the UI of the site serving it, instead of posting a reply post on an indieweb site and sending a webmention https://indieweb.org/local_comment
#
gRegor
That's what I've mostly used^
#
carrvo
I'm looking at enhancing my "non-standard Webmentions" to accept that flow in addition to WebDAV properties.
#
carrvo
gRegor++ "local" or "native" then?
#
Loqi
gRegor has 41 karma in this channel over the last year (123 in all channels)
#
gRegor
yeah, I use "local comments"
#
gRegor
May not have a lot of use outside indieweb, most would just call them "comments". Only when we get into things like webmentions does it tend to have an impact on terminology
#
gRegor
Mostly a dev term I suppose, since it involves the plumbing of how they're handled
#
carrvo
For me it would look like `type=local` in the post request and I want to ensure that is intelligible. Maybe `type=local-comment`
#
gRegor
Ah, are you using one endpoint for both webmention and local comments?
#
carrvo
Non-technical people shouldn't see my term 🙂
#
carrvo
Yes, that is correct.
#
gRegor
Neat!
#
carrvo
One very powerful endpoint!
#
gRegor
one endpoint to rule them all. jk :)
#
carrvo
Yes! I almost typed that!
#
carrvo
Thanks again!
#
gRegor
welcome!

A good blog post on using native browser APIs versus using JS instead: https://blog.jim-nielsen.com/2025/more-control-equals-less-performance/

“Local” comments is a use thing, not a developer thing. It is indicating to the user that their comments are only local to that blog’s website, in contrast to comments which the user owns by posting them on their own website
#
[tantek]
Also, “native” is a very overloaded and poor term for this
#
[tantek]
At least in a dev context, “native” usually means to the OS, like a “native” app, and has nothing to do with websites
#
[tantek]
What is a native app
#
Loqi
App typically refers to a native app, usually a less functional version of a web site that is restricted to one or more proprietary platforms, but may also refer to the .app top level domain setup by Google that requires HTTPS https://indieweb.org/native_app
#
gRegor
 I've not heard anyone outside indieweb use "local comments"
#
[tantek]
Because when local comments are all you have, you just call them “comments”
#
[tantek]
Whenever you come up with a new user paradigm (peer to peer comments, blog to blog comments), you need a phrase to distinguish the old thing from the new thing
