burgeonlab [jeremycherfas]: I use Hugo and have looked into image shortcodes, Hugo pipes to process images while working on my own site. If you're talking about saving storage in the /public folder, I think it doesn't matter what size you give it, it'll crop it into the sizes you decide and only output those into /public, so the full size never appears there; only in your project directory. Are you

someoneplayedthis I'm considering adding a Notes section to the JSON that populates the DOM, and I'd probably add the carbon cost on a large website versus FontAwesome or similar. I made a tool to do the measurements in full now, including rendering impact, which also came up. That's one way I'd hope to make it more tangible.

someoneplayedthis The site also uses progressive disclosure, incidentally, triggered by human presence. The vertical height hides that from the user. Or it hopefully should do!

rosesaysthis Ah, good logic, thanks. I've been planning the best approach for a static-first certificate validation and on-demand display system (I hesitate to say generate for something so tiny with a print stylesheet) for a training company. SQLite is an option I was considering, but we are most likely to stick with plain JSONs accessed via secure API as there won't be simultaneous edits. Hence wondering why someone might not be sticki
#
rosesaysthis They've had issues with the company, pre-takeover, not getting rid of data when they should (GDPR violations). An initial chat surfaced that issue, so hopefully it can be dealt with pre-handover in January next year. My thinking is separate JSON files per client or course or tutor or month could make it a lot easier for them to maintain the data themselves, even without additional tools. And it obviously allows more efficien
#
rosesaysthis Human readable is a big advantage here, hence the preference for JSON. Keeps them a bit more independent and I can still create a UI that manages the lot, and even pools data from separate JSONs.

#
rosesaysthis Yeah. It makes a lot of sense in your case. I'm more trying to move things in the other direction when able! Hence being curious.
#
rosesaysthis I've used SQL a fair bit in the past, and obviously done my fair bit of WP database repairs. It's just so inefficient for a lot of tasks these things are commonly used for!
#
rosesaysthis Yeah data migration and cleaning isn't fun. I'm just glad I had this call with the client before it is in their hands properly, and they can get the previous owner of the company to clean up a lot of the mess before I get involved. Really no need for me to migrate more data than I need to...!
#
[jeremycherfas] @burgeonlab I do not use a shortcode. I am using the Hugo Gallery theme with so far no tinkering and all it produces is the gallery. It always includes a copy of the original image, which is a good thing for large screens, but it certainly does not need to be larger than 1512 X 2016 pixels.

[social] Realizing today that my blog search won’t search 3-letter words as Maria / MySQL for fulltext indexing defaults to 4-letter words and higher. I don’t know that I can modify the settings in the config for Maria on my host’s DB.

[social] It seems if I switch my MariaDB engine from MyISAM to InnoDB the default fulltext character text minimum index shifts from 4 chars to 3 chars. Hmm…

Loqi URL design is the practice of deliberately designing URLs, in particular, permalinks, typically for a better UX for everyone who creates, reads, and shares content https://indieweb.org/URL_design

yesoperator Idk capjamesg[d] that seems like a success story of optimizing only when needed, not the dangers it seems to caution against. Maybe I'm salty because I'm currently working on a system that leverages flat paths like that heh, and I want to resist any counter advice

[morgan] I read a lot of the article by Ahmed and it has good stuff but basically at the end of it is really just saying "you make early decisions with consequences later, try and make good ones"
