Whoa, that’s so cool. Are you using youtube as a personal player? Kottke made something like that and I’d be noodling on something similar if I wasn’t already so backlogged with photo-related projects:
#
[Al_Abut]
One of my resolutions for the new year is to create way more indieweb events, whether as popups or monthly series, mostly focused on content and vibe instead of the underlying tech. E.g. photos, books, movies, etc. There could be a great one for music too! Our photo discussion took a turn towards all kinds of mediums.

There’s a couple of people on Mastodon that are always sharing cool new music, like Nick
#
[tantek]
more user-centric than plumbing-centric is usually how we put that contrast [Al_Abut]
#
gRegor
Ooh that's a nifty music project
#
[Al_Abut]
[tantek] hmm, I can see that in other contexts but I don’t think it applies to the mental model I’m developing for this type of series. Congratulations though, you found a rare edge case where using a term like “user-centric” probably isn’t that user-centric, haha.
#
[Al_Abut]
I liked how people I’ve never seen before at an HWC or other zoom popped up on the photo popup, pulled in from Bluesky and Mastodon. I’m just following this hunch that maybe this “go to market strategy” of focusing on the types of media might do more of that.
#
[Al_Abut]
So maybe not the full-on prototypical newbies of people making their first blog, but the Slack-adjacent groups of people who are big fans of the indieweb movement in principle and newbie in the sense of needing to be encouraged to come out of the woodwork to an event.
#
[Al_Abut]
Remember me saying a few months ago that as this next IWCSD was coming up, I felt my mind drifting back to the very first session of the first one two years ago, where we talked about newbies and I shared my journey of how the HWC Pacific calls were my gateway drug? This might be the second part of that rumination on doing something about getting more people involved.
#
[Al_Abut]
I do remember saying back in 2023 that async video could be helpful, short little sub 1 min explainers. There’s enough of the hour plus conference talks for those that are sold already and deep into the rabbit hole.
#
[tantek]
I think you have something there
#
[Al_Abut]
E.g. one of my potential projects for this weekend is to do the thing we talked about at HWC last week - a 30-60 second explainer of why microformats over RSS.
#
[tantek]
I'd like to challenge you to try to do an explanation of IndieWeb in under a minute. It's very difficult
#
[Al_Abut]
You and Gregor blew my hair back about that topic last week
#
[Al_Abut]
Oh I'm sure it’s not, haha
#
[tantek]
ah, per topic, maybe that's more doable
#
[artlung]
[Al_Abut] I do not use YouTube as my primary music source, no. But I do play music videos on it sometimes.
#
[tantek]
I also think you got more people at the pop-up beyond the usuals because of the specific topic
#
[Al_Abut]
I'm about to get even more arrogant than usual but this feels like the kind of challenge I’ve had at so many workplaces that end up being totally explainable
#
gRegor
I use YouTube Music. I'll try out the export and playlist thing from one of [artlung]'s playlists
#
[tantek]
consider one form of that kind of challenge to do *every* explanation on Zoom etc. in less than a minute
#
[Al_Abut]
Ha
#
[tantek]
like in HWC, FrESH etc
#
[tantek]
like try setting a timer on yourself (it's hard!)
#
[Al_Abut]
I was just typing one of the major pitfalls for people when they try short explainers and you demonstrated it. Lemme copy past: the key is to focus on clarity, not comprehensiveness.
#
[Al_Abut]
Trying to explain every topic of every meeting is the very definition of comprehensiveness
#
[Al_Abut]
How do you do it? You don’t. You pick your battles.
#
[Al_Abut]
Those battles being a combo of 1) whatever’s most important to explain, and even more importantly, 2) whatever you know you can explain clearly.
#
[Al_Abut]
So right now I’ve got a short script in mind for the microformats vs rss, I can easily imagine an overall one for indieweb (make your own website, be independent from large corporate control, carve out your own little patch on the internet, etc, not getting into the weeds with webmentions or whatever)
#
[Al_Abut]
And then it grows from there.
#
[Al_Abut]
Oops, I just gave myself a 2026 vlogging challenge, haha
#
[Al_Abut]
It's the kind of thing that’s easier to show rather than tell. I’ll scope it down to seeing if I can shoot 2-3 good ones this weekend.
#
gRegor
And thanks for the reminder to listen to more Wolf Alice!
#
[Al_Abut]
Whoa, very fun.
#

Looks like YT picked up a cover of the MBV song though

There have been CSV to music silo playlist services for a while. I don’t remember one that worked so well, without forcing you to create an account or pay though.
#
[artlung]
But yes, sometimes it’ll match something off
#
gRegor
Yeah, this one let me change the playlist name, though not the description (or so it seemed?). Easy enough to change that once it was in YT Music though.
#
gRegor
Impressive for just an OAuth connection to YT Music, no signup process otherwise!
#
[artlung]
I like scratching my music itch in this era where people are reconsidering which service to use
#
gRegor
Yeah, fun experiments!

On the free plan, "Transfer up to 500 songs for free". Not bad.

[aciccarello] I'm curious - why the switch?
#
[aciccarello]
I was using the free YouTube music with ads before. My friend just got a friends and family plan with Deezer and shared access
#
[aciccarello]
He was hoping to write an integration with their API but then learned they aren't allowing more apps to use the authenticated API...

Ah, that makes sense. I've had the ad-free youtube since it was called red instead of premium and I love it. I'd probably get rid of every single other streaming service including live sports before I let that one go.
#
[Al_Abut]
At least for video. I've been a satisfied customer of Apple Music since its inception too.
#
gRegor
I'm still grandfathered in under a cheap plan from the old Google Play Music days. It was pretty sweet when they merged it with YT Red then Premium

Found someones site on neocities and it said it uses Javascript.. It didn't look like it at all. But they've found a way to include headers and footers, by loading it via XHR.. which is an interesting thing to me. Is it unorthodox, yes a little. Do they have many other options on pure static site, not really no?
#
[tantek]
it's one way of solving that problem yeah
#

Server side includes are a lost art
#
[tantek]
like PHP?

#

I was referring to the thing built into Apache, not a full programming language, but you had simple "include" directives that would do basically what that JS is doing
#
[artlung]
`<!--#include virtual="/footer.html" -->` ❤️ ❤️ ❤️
#
aaronpk
Yes that
#
[artlung]
I encountered someone whose site's `link[rel=webmention]` was added client-side. It confused me a great deal when I could not detect it with my webmention sender. So far it's been very much an exceptio.
#
[artlung]
exception.
#
gRegor
Yeah I've seen that once or twice
