Does anyone text themselves to post to their blog?
#
[Sophia_wood]
I am pondering this flow.
#

"text themselves" i.e. send a message to your own number, or just *a* number that you have?
#
ulhar4409
i do know NearlyFreeSpeech allows forwarding emails to HTTP POST requests

in like 2004 i had a feature where i could text a number and it would update a section on my home page
#
[Sophia_wood]
Yup - I'd like to text myself and have it post - just trying to figure out if there is a best-practice flow.
#
[Sophia_wood]
it is one of my options this year for a site that I am concidering.
#
ulhar4409
if it works for you, it works for you, no?
#
[Sophia_wood]
I could use shortcuts, watchdog, and other things, but I'm not sure what the best approach is.
#

i don't know enough about the territory to make any suggestions unfortunately

personally i think the value of SMS as a posting interface has diminished dramatically compared to the pre-smartphone era

This year's journal is in a numbers file (spreadsheet). I run a script and it updates.

the only thing I could see being good for is setting a AIM/ICQ-like status

[Sophia_wood] I've been pretty happy now that I have a micropub endpoint set up

It's made it a lot easier to post from my phone

“Text to blog” was the original use case for Twitter that I loved so much. It was even pre-group texts.
#
[Al_Abut]
Could be fun to bring that back

That was pretty much the sole reason I got a Twitter account back in 2007. I was off traveling, and had a very good phone package that gave me free SMS in about 80% of the countries I was planning to visit to some predefined numbers. I made Twitter's text line one of those contacts, and could keep way more friends/family updated on what I was doing as a result 😄

(and though very few of them had Twitter, or even knew what it was, I also had a self-hosted blog, my first proper website, with a Twitter integration, so messages just appeared on the homepage magically. Internet cost a fortune, and was all web café stuff, so this was a great cost saver)

“Buttons do things, links go places” is a nice and tidy summation.

[Murray] nice! Same here, Twitter was purely to stay in touch at first. My first year in SF was the last year of nursing school for my fiancé back in my hometown, so I’d text quick updates on work breaks. She had no idea that it had a web interface or that others followed me or any of it, it was glorified one-to-many SMS.

[jeremycherfas] perfect timing, I’ve been toiling away on microformats for photos for the first time in the last few days and that page has helpful tips that I didn’t see. I got so caught up in cleaning up the table of contents that I didn’t scroll down and see the rest of it 😂
#
[Al_Abut]
So I'm curious about the classes for descriptions. The example has `p-content` on a paragraph and an entry with one photo. I’m sure that’s fine, I don’t have a feel for what’s correct yet and I’m fumbling around as I learn, but is it better to have `p-summary` instead when the photo is the content? And then `e-content` for when it’s multiple photos?
#
[Al_Abut]
Or `e-content` when it’s a combo of photos and commentary?

[Al_Abut]: u-photo usually is used when the photo is the primary subject of the post in my limited experience. If it was just adding context it could be u-featured or just not microformatred
#
GWG
But that's my interpretation
#
GWG
I put summary and e-content on some
#
[Al_Abut]
Ah, so `u-photo` when it’s a “photo post” with just pic(s) and `e-content` when it’s more of a blog post narrative with photos dispersed throughout?
#
GWG
That's how I understand it, yes
#
GWG
But someone correct me

I'm still honing in on what this weekend’s project will be and one option is to recreate the format of my rss feed with microformats so I can swap it out without anyone noticing in their readers. Then I can keep expanding what kinds of things get thrown into the feed without ever having to deal with rss again.
#
[Al_Abut]
One question I had about that was whether to keep the same url for the current rss.xml and just redirect to the new one hosted by Granary, like [capjamesg] does.
#
[Al_Abut]
I might get on a roll and knock out that project before the Sunday create day comes around. I feel like I’m picking up steam on microformats now that I’ve got my head around some of the basics.
#
capjamesg
Yeah! Keeping the same URL is definitely important.
#
capjamesg
Remember to do a _temporary_ redirect.
#
capjamesg
You don't want to redirect your main feed URL permanently to another website 😅

This is interesting for building a planet like interface to bsky, or maybe a mastodon-alike local cache https://docs.bsky.app/blog/introducing-tap
