what are naming conventions
#
Loqi
It looks like we don't have a page for "naming conventions" yet. Would you like to create it? (Or just say "naming conventions is ____", a sentence describing the term)
#
[tantek]
naming conventions is /naming_convention
#
[tantek]
has anyone considered a project naming convention based on Transformers (film)? E.g. primary CMS called "The Cube" and then go from there

oh that’s fun. I’ve come across a lot of Tolkien, Star Wars and Star Trek.
#
[Al_Abut]
You know what’s not fun? Accidentally publishing a draft of a post in outline form and now it’s out there in the world across who know’s how many feed readers. Did that yesterday with my iwcsd recap and I don’t think there’s any recourse, that genie’s out of the bottle.

I have thought about having a five minute delay between publishing and something showing up in my feed.
#
capjamesg
But it would mean rebuilding my site on a delay and that would be a bit difficult to orchestrate.

When I added RSS to my setup I built it as a stand alone step. If I publish something I can go read it and check it and then manually push the RSS update, followed by the alert to seed the distribution services.
#
[tantek]
[social] ++ manual push to syndicate is a good design IMO

#
[tantek]
I myself have at least a 10min delay before posts show up in my Atom feed file which seems long enough to fix typos etc
#
[social]
The manual push has saved me so many times.
#
[tantek]
Thought about making it 30 or 60 tbh
#
[tantek]
Back when I had semi-automatic POSSE, I had a manual push to POSSE (and Webmention) button for my new posts
#
[tantek]
So that was always an explicit step
#
[social]
I have a step following RSS, which is the alerts through Pingomatic.
#
[social]
I really surprised it still runs. It is down to 4 services it feeds from the 16 or so it would alert in the past. I don’t know how much good it does these days.
#
[Al_Abut]
What a great idea and so simple. I'm going to kill the autogeneration of the feed.

[Al_Abut]
Oh yes, it's going to be reborn from something I feared into a lovingly recrafted new process. I was planning on switching away from Astro’s RSS generation to using Granary anyway before this new post went up, so I can see how new entries look in the monocle preview and other tools while I get my sea legs with microformats.
#
[Al_Abut]
Publishing that new type of feed manually will be so much easier.

I'm trying to decide which I hate more: Drupal or iCalendar. I keep going back and forth.
#
btrem
I have spent months trying to get a working ics feed on a community website. **Months**!
#
btrem
Seriously, we need a new calendar and contact format. And before you say "h-event" and "h-card," I'd like to note that there are no calendar/email/etc. apps that use those microformats. Not Thunderbird, not gmail, not Outlook....
#
btrem
sighs
#
[tantek]
btrem, that sounds like an accurate assessment of the situation
#
btrem
Yes, hence my sigh.
#
btrem
I'm utterly incapable (or the software is incapable) of getting an event feed out of my Drupal set up. Which makes me think there's no way that I could manage e.g. a Thunderbird extension to read an `h-feed` of `h-event`s. Regardless of how I fantasize about such a thing.
#
[tantek]
for most consuming code software like that I feel there are two potential paths
#
[tantek]
1> document a autodiscovery mechanism in the HTML version of a calendar to find an XML, JSON, or other "machines-first" format for the raw data, then publish that data there (this is what people do with RSS, ICS etc.) and then provide that at a separate URL. As you've noted, this is a pain and fragile due to all the usual fragile XML/JSON/other format problems + lack of validators, tests, DRY violation flaws etc.
#
[tantek]
2> provide a library to consume the mf2, h-feed, h-event etc. that the consuming code software can incorporate and use to support consuming the HTML version directly. This is more work I think up front, however I believe has a greater chance of being more reliable and robust in the long term

#
btrem
For (2) do you mean a library to convert mf-2 h-feed h-event into icalendar? And h-feed h-card into webdav/card?
#
btrem
ISTM that the best path forward is to obviate the need for icalendar and webdavcard. Provide a simple json or yaml format to replace them. Because there are already means of converting mf2 to json. Isn't there?

btrem I've done some module development for drupal- maybe literally a decade and a half ago - but maybe could be useful to try stuff with. is there a module you're trying that's not working? or are you rolling your own and running into issues? would be curious to see which part of your stack is the jerk
#
btrem
"which part...is the jerk" hahaha
#
Loqi
nice
#
btrem
I'm pretty sure the really broken part is the date_ical module.
#
[artlung]
not a terrific sign that the permalink for that module is returning a 500 class error for me right now. https://www.drupal.org/project/date_ical
#
btrem
hahah nope.
#
[artlung]
though the error does point at Mastodon account: https://mastodon.social/@drupalinfra - which does say they had a drive failure they're working on
#
[artlung]
bad day for drupal-land. 😞
#
btrem
Yep. Just checked another module's site, and it too returns 500.
#
btrem
I think I'm done with this for the day. But I'd love to check back with you at some point to see what you think about this. If you're game.
#
btrem
I'm done with this for the day, and not a little bitter. ;-)
#
[artlung]
Gotcha. Yeah, I'd be curious to take a shot at some point. mention me, or email. I'm around btrem. Sorry for the frustrations.

btrem re: "convert to icalendar" no I mean a library that provides a parsed data structure native to the consuming code implementation language
#
[artlung]
this archival version of the page has notes about dependencies and a php7 patch which definitely give a bad impression of the odds this is reliable code. https://web.archive.org/web/20250812194044/https://www.drupal.org/project/date_ical
#
[artlung]
ultimately the model has to we well behaved. the "source of truth" must be resilient so it can be a good source for conversion into a structured format.

#

No idea how easy or likely difficult with Drupal, but I do have https://github.com/gRegorLove/mf2-to-iCalendar and use it to convert my calendar page to ICS
#
[artlung]
looks like more of drupal can use namespaced composer modules so might be plausible.

I think I'm remembering another aspect, the list of events is behind authentication, not on a public page, so that lib wouldn't work out of the box for that. Could probably adjust it to allow passing HTML directly to the lib instead of parsing a URL, though.
#
btrem
gRegor: Drupal is up to v 11, though 10 is still common -- probably more sites running 10 than 11 atm -- and is also what I'm running.
#
gRegor
Makes sense
#
btrem
Also the feed will be behind auth -- err, well, it will be behind auth if I ever get a reliable feed implemented -- but I might have that part figured out. I filed an issue with date_ical asking for basic http auth, and submitted a PR to add it. However, I have not heard back from the maintainers. It's only been a week or so, but given how out of date the docs are, that PR may never get a look.
#

I don't have time to get into it any more. I gotta catch a bus, then a train, then a ferry.... But after the holidays I'll get back to pushing that bolder up the hill. ;-) I'll touch base with gRegor and [artlung] then.

For https://www.instagram.com/p/DQ-4gALkXr7/, there is a classic `meta name=description` which has my caption in quotes, prefixed with basic info about the post (# of likes, comments, my username, and date published). It repeats the same content in the `meta property=og:description` tag.
#
gRegor
They don't publish `meta name=keywords` if that's what you were referring to, [tantek]
#
[tantek]
yes meta name=keywords - it's in the view source screenshot in the article I posted to #indieweb (added to IG as criticism)
#
gRegor
Another odd difference then. Mine doesn't have a meta keywords tag.
#
[tantek]
bunch of keywords that were not present in the original caption
#
[tantek]
right, could be a thing only for new posts
#
gRegor
Surprised they still publish that at all. I thought search engines started ignoring it long ago
#
[tantek]
my most recent IG post (>2y ago) also has a very long caption which is also included in the og:description in full
#
gRegor
True, very new posts I guess. This post was November
#
[tantek]
hey even if search engines are ignoring it I suspect that LLM crawlers are now reading meta keywords
#
