[KevinMarks] if you find people proposing random new discovery proposals for 88x31 image discovery, please link them to https://indieweb.org/88x31#How_to_markup_discovery
#
[tantek]
we don't need a new element, a new rel value, or property or anything else, certainly no well-known--
#
Loqi
well-known has -1 karma in this channel over the last year (-4 in all channels)

I am finally relenting am making my own 88x31 button "generator" (AKA a static HTML+CSS file from scratch that I tweak) because none of the existing generator provide sufficient flexibility (where I am spoiled by the flexibility of CSS)
#
[tantek]
of course this has me rethinking just how plain my personal site "header" is
#
ulhar4409
i am curious to see this
#
pfych
I need to come up with a fun 88x31 for my site so I can comission someone more aristicly inclined to make me a nice one! I've tried a few times myself and they're always quite crusty haha
#
gRegor
I did a manual HTML5 button in CSS a little while back: https://gregorlove.com/lab/ Not a generator though, just hacking on some CSS

Oh I think that was before the logo change. womp womp
#
[tantek]
ulhar4409 I may upload it as a static standalone page to my site
#
[tantek]
pfych, I sympathize deeply
#
[tantek]
gRegor oh no that needs a content warning lol
#
ulhar4409
i made this one some time ago
#
ulhar4409
made by drawing in aseprite because that's what i know how to do 😄
#
[tantek]
ulhar4409++ nicely done
#
Loqi
ulhar4409 has 1 karma in this channel over the last year (3 in all channels)

[tantek]
ulhar4409 here you go, this is the HTML+CSS used to make my own "simple" 88x31 at 2x resolution: https://tantek.com/88x31css.html
#
ulhar4409
huh, nice
#
[tantek]
decided to offer both 88x31 1x resolution and 2x resolution. This is good enough for now: https://tantek.com/88x31x2.png
#
gRegor
The last two emojis go under the box for me
#
gRegor
Or is it meant to be like "CSS IS AWESOME" :D
#
[tantek]
works in Firefox on Mac for me. which OS?
#
gRegor
Windows, both Firefox and Chrome
#
[tantek]
probably font metrics differences
#
[tantek]
also likely emoji graphics differences too
#
[tantek]
I figure people can tweak it to fit their needs. All I needed was for it to work on my laptop so I could screenshot it and make PNGs
#
gRegor
Same thing I ran into with my HTML5 button experiment, that checkmark isn't green on all systems
#
[tantek]
yeah it's more of a generator than an actual embeddable thing
#
gRegor
Ahh, gotcha. I thought you were using it directly. Neat
#
[tantek]
yeah I noted context on my examples entry: https://indieweb.org/88x31#IndieWeb_Examples
#
[tantek]
interestingly I couldn't embed the images on of my buttons on the wiki (they only showed the alt text) so I wonder if Cloudflare is blocking cross-site embedding (which probably isn't a bad thing by default)
#
[tantek]
added the link rel=icon sizes=88x31 discovery link to my home page too

The spammers are still hammering my site, even though there is no longer an email form for them on the page they are looking for. I’m wondering now whether I can somehow change the slug of that one page (and the links to it) without removing it entirely, so they would get an immediate 404. There may even be a way to use Grav’s routing feature.

Permalinks sometimes feel like a disadvantage these days.
#
[tantek]
in what way?
#
[tantek]
IMO that's like saying writing down history feels like a disadvantage
#
to2ds
Mainly from the bad bots and LLM crawler behaviors.
#
to2ds
They're definitely necessary but are an abuse vector.
#
[jeremycherfas]
Clearly the spambot has learned the permalink of the page it was using on my site to send emails, because RAM usage has stayed at around 80% since I removed the actual email form about 24 hours ago. So now I am going to change the permalink and see if that helps. I mean, it is my /About page, which I very much doubt anyone has bookmarked or anything.
#
[jeremycherfas]
And the awful part of the RAM being that high is that it results in me being unable to do much because of “capacity problems,” which I am not going to pay to remove. 🙂
#
[jeremycherfas]
Maybe I am on completely the wrong track here — it wouldn’t be the first time — but I cannot think of anything else.
#
[Murray]
is it possible its a bot scraping the page over and over, stuck in some kind of loop?
#
[jeremycherfas]
No, it isn’t scraping. It is using the feedback form to send a spam message to an email address.
#
tgagor
Do you self host it? Apache or Nginx?
#
tgagor
If you're able to recognize bots (by user agent, some headers, etc) you can gzip bomb them
#
[jeremycherfas]
It is hosted by Dreamhost and protected (!) by Cloudflare. I know the IP, but that is all
#
to2ds
Is there any way to block that particular IP address on your hosting platorm?
#
tgagor
That's already something. Can you add a redirect rule in Cloudflare?
#
tgagor
CF allow to define conditional rules (even in free tier), you can try to do something like:
#
tgagor
if from ip -> redirect to same ip
#
tgagor
redirects are cheap
#
[jeremycherfas]
I don’t understand redirect to same IP. What would that do?
#
tgagor
you know the evil IP, send them back to themself
#
to2ds
Or maybe send them back to 127.0.0.1? :D
#
tgagor
that also would work
#
tgagor
CF also have few other things, like "Browser Integrity Check" - you can enforce it for a particular subpage, it would trigger captcha for anyone trying to get to you about page
#
[jeremycherfas]
I just checked, and requests for the page seem to be dropping off, so I’ll leave the redirect for now. I’m most attracted by the idea of adding CF/Turnstile to the email form only.
#
tgagor
I didn't use this one yet
#
[jeremycherfas]
I couldn’t find a redirect rule, so I just blocked that IP completely, not challenge. I’ll take another look tomorrow.
#
tgagor
Domain -> Rules -> Page Rules
#
tgagor
actually not here, those are too generic, they changed it

Rules -> Overview and probably a transform rule
#
tgagor
[edit] Rules -> Overview and probably a redirect rule
#
tgagor
and there you can use "Custom filter expression" where you can use "Source IP" and target redirect

I am learning new things about how browsers choose fav icons for tabs etc
#
[tantek]
Specifically that they prefer png over jpg
#
to2ds
We might have to upgrade the expression "stay in your lane" to "stay in your css grid lane" for 2026+ :)
#
ulhar4409
i am not surprised about the png>jpg preference (after all, this is also *my* preference)
DanQ and barnaby joined the channel
#
[tantek]
correction: no preference for png over jpg at least in Firefox and Safari
#
[tantek]
wow rel=icon handling is inconsistent. goodness sakes I should not have be reading a Wikipedia page for interoperability
#
[tantek]
can't believe "pick the last one" is a thing (among the link rel=icon elements)
#
ulhar4409
let me guess, is "pick the first one" *also* a thing?
#
[tantek]
sort of, in Chrome, sometimes 🙃
#
[tantek]
now I am also understanding better why rel=icon is not being used for things beyond the browser/tab favicon, because to "get it right" you have to worry about link rel=icon order and I suspect that makes it too easy to screw up
#

this makes me want to write a spec for what Safari and Firefox do, since it's roughly interoperable, and then put in a "fake" icon that shows up red for Chrome or something since they've chosen to be inconsistent
#
[tantek]
stackoverflow as usual has outdated or otherwise incorrect answers stated very confidently

I feel like I asked this question a long time ago, but maybe I'm imagining. Does anyone know of a site that shows a complete example of a carddav response?
#
btrem
Reason: I want to provide a read only address book via a Drupal site.
#
[tantek]
would love to figure out a CardHTML equivalent to that
#
[tantek]
so a website could "just" provide HTML discoverable by link rels etc., and have a "converter" provide a CardDAV wrapper
#
[tantek]
no need to burden every site publisher with debugging providing a CardDAV endpoint
#
btrem
Well, yeah, and I'd like world peace.
#
btrem
I mean, as long as we're talking about a cardHTML, why not calHTML?
#
btrem
We talked this to death the other day. The problem is, as always, client adoption. As long as email clients, calendar apps, etc. only deal with carddav and caldav, I'm pretty much stuck. But I have the site member's email addresses in Drupal; I can output a list. If I only knew the format.
#
[tantek]
point about the client adoption is why I explicitly said "have a converter provide a CardDAV wrapper" - so clients wouldn't have to change
#
btrem
Ah, missed that. Well, in that case, to build a CardDAV wrapper, I'd need to know what the format of a CardDAV response is. As in, does the client say "GET foo"? And what is the format of the response to such a request?
#
btrem
I can tell you this: in my time searching the web for a solution, I've come across a *lot* of people looking for read-only cardDAV. I'd bet there'd be a lot of uptake.
#
[tantek]
fascinating. read-only CardDAV would be a reasonable feature request for Granary IMO if you want to file an issue!
DanQ joined the channel
#
btrem
What is Granary?
#
Loqi
granary is an open source social web translator that converts between various feed and activity formats, used by IndieWeb community members to for example automatically generate feed files from HTML https://indieweb.org/granary
#
btrem
sighs
#
btrem
Unfortunately, written in Python. That'd normally be a good thing, but Drupal is PHP.
#
[tantek]
still worth filing an issue!
#
btrem
Not for me! :-p
#
btrem
But in any case, my earlier question is still relevant, since [snarfed] would need the CardDAV format in order to add it to Granary, no?
#
ulhar4409
(i will point out, if you want to host Granary yourself, it doesn't have to be part of your Drupal install at all :P)
